Chapter 5

Author: Rain Sounds
I could hear paper rustling and pens scratching across the pages. I just stood outside the door and listened to the whole thing.

At 10:00 am, Lena made her move. She posted a video from her account with 30 million followers. The woman wore no makeup and an old coat, clutching the newspaper from back then in her hand. Tears fell the moment she started talking.

"I thought I could finally let go after 38 years. I never thought that kind of evil could be passed down. Brendan ruined me 38 years ago, and now his son is coming after my daughter."

Lena dropped to her knees in front of the camera. "Everyone, please help us. I don't want compensation. I just want justice."

The video blew up within ten minutes of going up. My photo was all over the front page, and people dug up Dad's name and what happened back then all over again.

One line took over the Internet. It read, "The Fuller father and son are predators."

I stared at those words for a long time, not because I was afraid, but because I was hurting.

Dad had been dead for so many years, but Lena still dragged his name through the mud.

That afternoon, the school district and police showed up to calm the backlash and get to the truth. They held a public briefing that was streamed online.

The main conference room was packed. A row of cameras filled the front, while independent media crowded in the back, recording on their phones.

Winona sat in the front row, her face white and her shoulders shaking. Lena held her close, wiping her tears now and then. Whenever a camera came near, Winona buried her face in Lena's arms. The two of them held each other close.

Years ago, it was Lena who was "victimized". Now, her daughter was the one everyone felt sorry for.

It all looked so convincing that everyone forgot one thing. The man who was driven to his death back then was named Brendan Fuller.

Dave spoke first, saying, "We will never cover for anyone's crime."

Then, Caden followed, saying the school had zero tolerance for misconduct.

When it was Winona's turn, she braced against the table and looked at me with tears on her face. "Jeremy, I just want you to apologize to me today. Admit what you did to me, and admit what your dad did to my mom. Then, quit teaching for good."

Everyone in the room gasped.

Lena stood up too. Her hand shook as she pointed at me. "You and your dad have ruined both our lives! Today, you have to make things right!"

Every camera turned toward me. Comments filled the screen. Everyone was waiting for me to panic, to start defending myself, to get backed into a corner.

I slowly got to my feet as the room went quiet. I picked up the brown envelope by my feet, untied the string, and took out the black USB drive.

Winona stopped crying, and Lena froze.

I handed the USB drive to a staff member. "Hook it up to the screen."

The staff member didn't take it. He looked at the police first. The officer in charge paused for a few seconds before giving him a nod. The staff member plugged in the USB drive, and the files started loading.

That was when Winona shot to her feet, her voice breaking as she yelled, "Don't play it!"

Everyone, including me, turned to look at her.

I smiled. "Ms. Lambert, what are you afraid of?"

The screen went black, and the video started loading.

Winona gripped the edge of the table, her knuckles turning white.

I looked at Lena and Winona. "Don't rush. The people who really need to apologize will be on that screen in a moment."

I turned toward Lena, her face already pale. "Including you, the one who drove my dad to his death 38 years ago."

A moment later, the big screen lit up.

When the orientation ended, a young girl with ponytails and bright eyes came over to me."Sir, that teacher you were just talking about… Was it Mr. Fuller from the school museum?"I nodded. She thought about it and said, "I want to be a teacher like him."I paused for a moment. Then, I smiled. "Alright, remember this. Being like him isn't just about being kind. You have to be brave and clear-headed. When everyone else is out for blood, you have to be brave enough to ask for proof."The girl nodded solemnly. "I will." Then, she rejoined the rest of her classmates.I stood there and stared after her. I suddenly felt that what Dad left behind had never died. It had just been buried under the dust for all these years. Now, the dust had been cleared away, and people could see the light again.…I went to my parents' graves after that. This time, there was no rain, and the sky was blue. I brought flowers and a new photo showing students standing reverently in front of Dad's displa

The last thing I wanted was for anyone to turn Mom's pain into clickbait too. So, I gave just one interview, strictly for the school district. The host asked, "Mr. Fuller, do you still hate Lena?"I thought about it for a long time. "Yes."The host paused. I guessed she didn't expect me to be so blunt."I'm not going to pretend like I forgave her. She caused my parents' death. I hate her, and I think that's normal.""But I'm not going to let the hatred run my life. My dad was a teacher, and so am I. We don't pass down hatred. We teach the truth, rules, and our boundaries."My interview got everyone talking. Some thought I came off too strong, but others said I finally sounded like a principal.I didn't respond to any of them.I just went to work as usual. I went to my meetings and made my rounds.Sometimes, when I passed tenth Grade, Class 3, I'd still think of the phone stand Winona used to prop up on the desk. But the class now had a new teacher, and the morning reading st

Sunlight fell on the kids as they ran around, loud and full of life. They didn't need cameras following them around, and they didn't need to put on some image for anyone. It hit me then.I'd spent all these years hating Lena, the people who stayed silent, and the ones who stood by and judged without even knowing the truth. But destroying any of them was never what I wanted most.I wanted to keep what Dad believed in alive and finish what he'd started. He'd always believed school should be a good place, where teachers looked out for their students. Even when the truth took years to come out, he still believed someone had to wait for it.He died believing in all of that. I was still here. I wanted to prove he was right.…Six months later, the school redid its history museum. An old display board had been sitting in the corner. It read, "Professional conduct matters. Everyone should learn from past mistakes."There was no name underneath, but every veteran teacher knew exactly wh

"Dad, they said you were innocent." My voice was quiet. "It came too late, but at least they finally said it."The rain came down harder. I kept my head down, my tears mixing with the downpour. I thought I'd break down crying, but I didn't.I just sat there, as if I'd finally gone back to when I was seven years old—back beneath the school building, back in Mom's cold arms, and back to those days when everyone was calling us names. Then, I told that little kid I used to be, "See? We didn't wait all those years for nothing."…Lena's public appearance was outside the courthouse. She had a mask on, her hair was a mess, and for once, there were no assistants or fans around her. There were no cameras flashing, either.Reporters kept shouting questions at her."Do you admit you lied about Mr. Fuller?""Are you going to apologize to his family?""Are you going to pay back the money you made from your sob story?"Lena kept her head down. She didn't answer."Ms. Lambert, do you regre

When the news broke that Winona's account had been banned, her followers were still arguing in the comments. Some people pitied Winona, while some said she had only been lied to by Lena. Some even said that it was because of the trauma she'd suffered as a child that led her to frame me.I couldn't believe the comments. There were always people willing to find an excuse for someone else's cruelty because admitting they'd backed the wrong side was hard. So instead of apologizing, they'd rather say, "She has a hard life."But what about the people she pushed into the abyss? Did they have it easy?A week later, Winona had someone send me a letter in a thin envelope, with her messy handwriting all over it.She said she'd grown up hearing about some monster of a teacher who had ruined Lena's life, how Lena had pulled herself out of that mess, and how the Fuller family owed them both. And that was why Winona hated me, Westbrook High, and Sue.Winona had thought that as long as she stoo

"I didn't win," I said.Lena's eyes flickered, as if I had hit a nerve. Then, she smiled again. "So what? They're all dead. I've enjoyed 38 years of success. Jeremy, even if you prove his innocence today, your dad is still dead."She looked at me with pure malice. "You guys still lost."I didn't get angry. I just stared at her. "You're wrong. Dead people can't come back, but the living can clear their names for them. Lena, the good days you stole are over."Lena's smile faded. The police took her away, closing the door behind them.Everything went quiet. An exhaustion suddenly overwhelmed me. It wasn't physical tiredness. I'd been carrying this for 38 years. Now, it was finally over.Sue walked over to me, her eyes red. "Jeremy, if my dad were still here, he would be so happy."I turned to her. "Mr. Brooke did more than enough back then."She shook her head. "He still thinks it wasn't enough. He said that if he'd pushed a little harder or been a little more persistent, Mr. Ful
