Emile sat by the windowsill hugging her knees and looking at the endless night with a desolate expression trying to filter out the annoying sounds coming from the master bedroom. She let out a soft sigh thought about her miserable existence. Eight years of infatuated love and 3 years of marriage with absolute devotion left her with nothing but endless shame and an empty house. In the three years of marriage, there was not a day that the newspapers and entertainment world did not have a news of the colorful scandals for her husband.
Emile rested her chin on her knees as she thought back to the folly of her youth.
She met Daniel during her first year of university at a gathering of family friends. If at first, she was mesmerized by his handsome face and his domineering aura, later she fell in love with his brilliance and character.
Emile was an outstanding bubbly and beautiful girl. She was the goddess in the hearts of almost all the young men at her university, but she had eyes only for Daniel. However, she soon realized that her affections were one-sided and that he already had a sweetheart, Michelle. Even so, she was happy to watch from afar, silently blessing his happiness.
Whether it was a blessing or curse, Emile didn’t know then, but fate gave her a present in the form of her grandfather’s dying wish. She was to marry the grandson of his best friend. Her grandfather was the only family she had left in this world and had doted on her endlessly. There was no way she could deny him his dying wish.
Emile went to the cafe where her grandfather had arranged to meet her prospective husband. She still remembered the joy she felt as she saw Daniel sitting in the café waiting for her, although it was short lived. The fantasy broke the moment he opened his mouth.
“Ms Burke, I already have someone I love.” Daniel sighed “This marriage is my grandfather’s edict. I can’t do anything, but I hope you will withdraw.”
Emile sighed as she remembered her next words 3 years ago.
“You might not believe me, but I am also in a tricky situation. My grandfather is dying, and I want to honor his last wish.”
Emile wasn’t joking when she said that he wouldn’t believe her… no one would…. Everyone knew about her fascination of him.
“Heh!” He snorted with disdain.
“I can however promise you that we can live separately till my grandfather passes away peacefully and then divorce.” Emile took a deep breath before continuing “I will also speak with Michelle so that you won’t have any difficulties.”
“No need.” Daniel smirked as he stood up “This marriage will not happen. I will not marry anyone other than Michelle.”
Emile shrugged helplessly as she walked out of the café. She wandered around the park close to her home thinking about how to break this news to her grandfather when her phone rang. It was Daniel asking to meet again with Michelle.
The meeting was nothing special. It was basically Michelle showing off how much weight she carried in Daniel’s heart and enacting her deep sacrifice for him.
Michelle even had the audacity to demand that they have a room for her at their wedding home so that she and Daniel could stay together and Emile could stay in the guest room when no one was around.
Emile sat through expressionlessly since she wanted to fulfill her grandfather’s dying wish.
The wedding between the Burkes and Holstons was a extravagant affair although there was no joy in the hearts of the bride and groom. Before the wedding, Emile tried to pacify herself that she could at least fulfill the dream of marrying her prince charming even if it was fake. But standing in the church she realized that there was no joy only humiliation especially when the groom even refused to kiss the bride. The emcee joked that the bride and groom were shy to tide over the awkwardness.
Six months after the wedding Emile’s grandfather passed away happily never knowing the heartache his precious granddaughter faced. Emile wanted to be true to her word and to escape from the constant heartache she faced as her husband frolicked around with his lover. She got the divorce papers ready soon after the mourning period only to have Daniel burst her bubble. One of his grandfather’s conditions were that he couldn’t get divorced before 3 years.
During this time, she had learned that the reason Daniel agreed to the marriage was because of Michelle’s coaxing. His grandfather had issued the ultimatum that he would forfeit his right to inherit the Holston empire if he didn’t marry Emile. Daniel was ready to forfeit the world, but Michelle didn’t want to give up the life of riches. Although the reasons she came up with in front of Daniel were all wrapped in her love and willingness to sacrifice for his happiness; willing to be a nameless lover till his grandfather accepted her.
Emile decided to continue with the farce as she pacified herself that this was her sacrifice for her love’s happily ever after. She busied herself with her work; she loved designing and this consumed all her time, returning home only to sleep at night. Just when Emile had reconciled with her fate, Michelle suddenly left; that was 2 years ago. Daniel went crazy searching for her without any results. However, things went spirally downhill for Emile 6 months ago.
Although Emile didn’t know the reason, it was like Daniel flipped into a violent beast trapping her at home, forcefully making her resign from her job which was the only joy in her life. Even then, Emile never complained. She thought perhaps this would ease their relationship. Not only did he restrict her movements, he also verbally and sexually assaulted her without mercy. Her refusals were met with a rebuke that this was her duty as part of their marriage.
Ever since she married him, even while Michelle lived with them, she fulfilled her duties as wife. Cleaned, cooked and even waited for him to get back home before resting, even though she was working full-time. The only solace while Michelle was living with them was that she could preserve her dignity by not having to fulfill her duties as a wife in bed…. but that didn’t last long.
Emile had no idea how she survived; She had cut-off all her contacts and existed merely as the shell of the vibrant, brilliant lady she once was. She was a joke to the outside world. Her husband spent his days among the flowers, filling every gossip page in the country without giving her any face. What was even more unbearable were the bedmates he brought home and expected her to serve, like a maid. Even so, she never complained… hoping that one day, he might see her devotion and love her.
Michelle’s arrival 2 months later at her doorstep broke this last straw she was holding onto... Only then did she realize the reason for her torture …. Her best friend Abbey who was an entertainment reporter filled her in; Michelle had told Daniel that the reason she left was because Emile threatened to kill her.
Emile refused to accept this and confronted the two but other than Michelle pretending to be frightened and Daniel losing his temper and assaulting her…she didn’t have any gains.
Emile raised her head as she woke up from memory lane. Tomorrow was their third wedding anniversary. She stood up as her eyes filled with determination. She walked up to her laptop and sent two emails before logging off and going to sleep.
“Tonight, you’ll learn what that costs.”The words echoed in Carl’s ears… the words seemed ethereal, as though they were coming from another dimension. He had not fully regained his senses from the visual impact created by the presence of the man who seated, like an emperor, life and death balanced effortlessly in his hands, when the words were spoken.Once the staff left and the man sat down, everything became a blur. He had no idea when Mr Walter left the room nor when these people arrived. But he knew one thing for sure… today was not just judgement day, it was also doomsday for him.He didn’t know when he had dropped to his knees… but now, he was kneeling before the Night Lord, who is also known as the Demon emperor of the Night Empire. Chris was no longer in his civilian clothes; he too had changed into his alter ego although no one saw how they changed.Chris snapped his fingers and sat back. He didn’t need to say anything else. Two men, wearing similar outfit to the man next to
“Big treasure, what do you think Daddy is preoccupied with?” Emm knitted her pretty brows as she tilted her head at her brother.Big treasure frowned slightly before raising his hand to smooth the crease between his little sister’s brows. “Don’t worry too much. Daddy must be preoccupied with Mommy.”“Don’t try to trick me.” Emm pushed Chris Jnr’s hand away with a childish snort. “I’m not stupid.”“Why do you have to be smart?” Chris Jnr muttered in frustration before lifting his head with a perfect poker smile. “What are you saying, little treasure? What could Daddy…”“Okay…” Little treasure stood up, pushing her chair back in annoyance. “If you want to play dumb, then go ahead.”She was about to stomp out of the room when Chris Jnr caught her.“Don’t run away. Brother apologizes.”“So, are you going to tell me?”“Would you believe me if I told you I don’t know?”Emm folded her arms with a fierce expression. “What do you think?”“I really don’t know.” Chris Jnr shook his head. “I was
The ceremony was meant to be short and simple. The ceremony itself was… short and simple. The ruckus that followed was anything but...Music filled the cathedral as everyone arrived, welcoming and blissful. The ceremony began with two small figures, the flower girl and boy, walking with careful importance down the aisle. And then, as though summoned by mischief itself, their little tail followed…then came another… and another… until the aisle bloomed into a parade of Burke and Walter children, their laughter spilling softly into the hall like sunlight.Soft laughter rippled through the hall, warmth settling into every corner. And then, the bride appeared.Like a hush falling over a restless sea, chaos stilled into quiet excitement. Conversations faded, breaths softened, and all eyes turned as one to admire the bride.Night Wing, a man who had walked battlefields with ease, with the quiet confidence of a man certain of his path, froze…His heart stumbled… then raced… then seemed to sto
Four weeks passed in a blink, and soon it was the morning of Abbey’s big day. She had no idea how time had slipped through her fingers. It seemed like she was in a dream, and she never wanted to wake up.She had her life carefully mapped out. Though she appeared bright and cheerful, Abbey understood the darkness of the world around her. The only light in her life had been a girl around the same age as her, the one who walked into a restroom where she was being bullied when she was around eight and led her out of that quagmire. The young girl had unwittingly entered the restroom where she was being bullied. But she didn’t walk away like the others, she thrashed every single one of them, like a rowdy overlord before holding her hands that were covered in filth without hesitation and leading her away. One might think that was the start of a beautiful friendship but to Abbey, it wasn’t.She was grateful to the Burke princess for standing up for her, for disregarding the filth on her hand
Night Wing and Abbey had planned for a small wedding. Night Wing had no living relatives, at least none that he knew of, and Abbey had cut ties with her family long time ago, even before she was an adult, after they abandoned her at an orphanage following her parents’ passing.Their plans had been perfect on paper- a small, simple affair. But reality had other ideas. The only thing that remained unchanged was the cathedral wedding. It had been Abbey’s dream, ever since she was a little girl. The cathedral chosen for the ceremony was the one the Walters had attended ever since Adam moved his family here. Having been Chris’s shadow since the day they met, it was the only church Night Wing knew, was part of, and so the choice had been easy.Abbey’s original plan was to get ready from Emile’s place, Rose Villa. However, the arrival of the Burkes once again changed things.“My dear girl, the bride has to be escorted to the church from her home, not the groom’s place,” Agnes insisted.Abbey
Life slipped back into its familiar rhythm.Chris Jnr and Emm, along with their ever-present little tail, kept the entire household on its toes... decorating, re-decorating, and transforming their room into what they insisted was a “properly baby-friendly space.” Each new idea somehow demanded undoing the last, and the constant cycle drove everyone to the brink of madness.Until finally… Chris packed the trio off to Devil Island for training.“Finally… some peace. And my guilty pleasures.” Emile sighed contentedly, sinking into the couch as she unwrapped a bar of chocolate.Abbey arched a brow, glancing up from her tablet. She and Night Wing were knee-deep in wedding planning. Pulling everything together within a month was no easy feat… but at least neither of them had relatives hovering over their shoulders, offering opinions they didn’t ask for.A small mercy.“Those two have been driving me crazy,” Emile continued between bites, her tone light, her eyes bright. “Not allowed to eat
“I know you are married…” the man who answered previously spoke once again, the helplessness in his voice reverberating through the hall “but I have never seen you with Mrs Walter and I have always seen you with Ms Bell, who was your companion for banquets and social dinners. I have no reason to dou
After the excitement died down, everyone decided to go out, sight-seeing, like proper tourists. Adam invited his friends who politely stayed back at the hotel sensing that Adam and the rest had family matters to sort out, to join the group. Just like that, the Burkes, Walters, Adam’s three friends,
The groom kissing the bride, captured in the backdrop of the rising sun, was too magical to say the least; Other than the younger generation of the Burke and Walter household who were causing a ruckus by whistling and cheering, all the other guests were mesmerized by the magical moment that was unfo
“Where are you going?” Henry teased as he caught the little overlord and hurled him in the air.“Put me down.” Bruno frowned, flailing his legs anxiously “I haven’t finished discussing with little uncle.”Everyone laughed as Henry put Bruno down, who promptly ran to Chris, looked up at him curiously
