The moment class ended, Eli and I practically dragged ourselves out of that room. People were still staring, but honestly? We couldn’t care less. We had about ten minutes before our next class, and I figured it was the perfect time to get to know him better.

“Okay, let’s compare schedules,” he said as we sank onto one of the surprisingly considerate hallway benches. “It’s not every day a school blesses us with actual seating.”

We lined up our schedules. “We’ve got all our classes together—except Biology,” he squealed, pumping a fist.

“More fun for us, then,” I grinned.

“Okay, I’ve got a question,” I said.

“Lay it on me, sis,” he replied with dramatic flair, and I rolled my eyes.

“I get the stares for being new, sure. But I just realized... I’m not the only one they’re staring at.”

“Took you long enough to figure that out,” he said with a smirk. “They’ve always been like that. Typical high school kids who can’t handle how hot I am and that I’m gay. Add the fact I’ve been hanging out with you all morning, and they probably think I’ve switched teams.”

He made a gagging face. “No offense, Nova.”

“None taken.”

“So yeah, we’re kinda the center of attention right now. But don’t worry, it’s temporary. Aiden’s crew always snatches the spotlight back before long. Don’t ask me how—they just breathe and everyone talks.”

At the mention of that name, I scrunched up my face.

Eli caught it. “What’s with the look? You hardly know them.”

“I hardly know the rest, sure. But Aiden? Him—I’ve met.”

His brows shot up. “Already? How?”

“Let’s just say our first meeting was far from pleasant. He was full-on making out with that girl, Chloe, in front of the class when I arrived this morning. Then he had the nerve to throw some flirty crap my way.”

Eli gasped—loudly.

“Keep it down, drama queen! What was that scream for?”

“That scream, Nova, was necessary! Aiden doesn’t just talk to people—especially not new ones. Unless...”

“Unless what?”

“Unless he’s interested in you.”

The paper he sent my way came to mind, but I waved it off.

I groaned. “I’m not interested in him. And I don’t plan to be. I’m good, thanks.”

He waved a hand. “Doesn’t matter if you’re interested. If he is? Girl, you’re doomed. He’s a playboy and a jerk—but damn, he is smoking hot. If only he was gay, I’d take my chances and gladly get my heart broken.”

I raised an eyebrow. “You’re serious?”

“Nova, I would never joke about hotness. Ever.”

“You’re such a diva,” I laughed.

“Okay, young lady, let me educate you on their crew.”

I nodded like a good student.

“You know Aiden, so we’ll skip him. The girl he was lip-locked with is Chloe—his ‘girlfriend’ or... plaything,” he coughed. “She’s the jealous type. Thinks she’s Mrs. Aiden Cross already. Delusional much.”

I chuckled.

“Then there’s Ty—basketball prodigy, cool guy, Aiden’s closest friend. Also hot.”

He held up a finger.

“Last but definitely not least—Jace. Quiet type, but people say he’s hilarious when he talks. Laid back. And hot. My kind of hot.”

Something in his tone shifted when he mentioned Jace, and I made a mental note to investigate that later.

“Typical high school crew, huh?” he asked.

“At least there’s no football player or cheerleader this time,” I replied, and we both burst out laughing.

“You’re right! You’re so right—oh crap! We’re late!” he yelled suddenly.

I looked up. The hallway was almost empty. We’d been so caught up in conversation, we hadn’t noticed everyone else heading to class.

We bolted, laughing like lunatics.

“We’re almost there!” I said as our classroom came into view—just in time for me to slam into someone.

“Watch where you’re going!” screeched a familiar voice.

Oh no. Please not her.

I turned—and yep. It was Chloe. Hands on hips. Ready for war.

“Sorry,” I muttered. “We were just rushing to class.”

She tilted her head, eyes narrowing as recognition dawned. “You’re that girl from earlier, aren’t you?”

“Does it matter?” I said, itching to just get past her.

“Of course it matters,” came another voice. Instantly recognizable.

Aiden.

I hadn’t even noticed him—or the two guys flanking him—standing behind Chloe. My focus had been entirely on her.

Eli went silent beside me.

“And it matters how, Aiden?” I asked, emphasizing his name with all the disdain I could muster.

One of the guys—Ty or Jace, maybe—chuckled, but Aiden ignored it.

“You might still be bitter about not joining us earlier. I did invite you,” he said, that smug smirk firmly in place.

I laughed. Loudly.

They all looked at me like I’d lost it.

Turning to Chloe, I said, “I guess you’re not the only delusional one in your little crew. Your boyfriend’s just claimed the throne.”

I could feel Eli trembling beside me, trying to hold in his laughter.

“I already apologized, so I don’t see why we’re still standing here. Whether you accept it or not is really not my problem.”

I turned back to Aiden. “Goodbye, Aiden.”

With that, I grabbed Eli’s arm, looped it through mine, and strode into the classroom.

I could’ve sworn someone behind us burst out laughing before the door shut.

Let them laugh.

I wasn’t here to play games.

We slid into our chairs just as the bell rang. Eli leaned in, eyes gleaming with mischief.

“You just made enemies, babe. A hot one and a crazy one—and that’s not the kind that forgives easily.”

I just shrugged, even as my hands trembled with adrenaline.

Then I felt him.

Aiden walked into the class... and took the seat directly in front of me.

What gave him the right to switch seats like this?

“Mr. Cross,” came the teacher’s voice—thankfully.

Yes. Go teacher. Put him in his place.

“You’re not scheduled for this class.”

“I know,” he replied smoothly. “I was just hoping to bond with the new girl... for educational purposes.”

The whole class gasped. Literal gasps.

Say something, teach. Anything.

But he just turned back to the board and kept teaching, like this wasn’t pure insanity.

Aiden glanced back, full smile on display. “You don’t mind, do you?”

And without waiting for a response, he turned around again.

With over thirty pairs of eyes burning into me, I realized something terrifying.

I’d made a huge mistake crossing him.

And of course... Cross just had to be his name.

  • Nightmare turned love    Survived

Class was supposed to be my escape—a break from the earlier... what do I even call it? A gang-up? Public roast? Whatever it was, sitting through this lesson was the only thing keeping my heart from launching into orbit. My hand moved aimlessly over my notebook, scribbling nothing in particular. Learning is hard, y’all. We were about thirty minutes in when noise outside snapped me out of my imaginary rabbit hole. “What the heck is going on now?” I whispered to Eli, who wore the same confused expression. “No damn idea,” he muttered back. “Eyes on the board, people!” the teacher barked, trying and failing to redirect our attention. But nope—we all kept staring at the classroom door like it was about to fly open and unleash a demon. Well... it did open. And honestly? A demon would've been preferable. It was Monique. Again. Me and Eli exchanged looks. She stormed into class like she owned the place and made a beeline for me. Before I could even blink, she grabbed my wrist and

I thought the rumors would die down.I thought that after confronting Jordan, he’d at least try to shut them down. But ...surprise—they didn’t.If anything, they got worse. Snowballing into something so absurd I heard someone say I introduced him to my parents and then ditched him.Seriously? I didn’t know whether to laugh or cry.“Why do you look like someone stole your puppy?” Eli asked as we walked into school. The last few days had been weirdly chill. No Jordan sightings—as if he’d gone full underground rat mode. Meanwhile, Aiden and I were... surprisingly good.No major arguments, just the usual sarcasm and snark. He’d been trying his best to kill the rumor, but since he wasn’t the one people were pitying, no one listened.“I look like this,” I said, “because my name is still being dragged around like a trending hashtag.”I looped his arm through Eli's until he suddenly yanked it away with a dramatic gasp.“Okay, girl—boundaries. I do not want to be part of this love triangle. Be

I wasn’t sure where to start looking for Jordan—and it’s not like I could just text him. What would I even say?“Hey, I think you started a rumor that’s tanking my reputation. Mind chatting?”Yeah, no. Definitely not.But the upside of being the center of a high school rumor storm? Finding the eye of it doesn’t take much.I overheard some girls talking—loudly—and followed the trail straight to the basketball court.Classic.There he was, sitting with some guy I didn’t recognize, tossing a bottle cap into the air like he didn’t have a care in the world. That is, until he saw me.His posture shifted fast—stiff, guarded. Like he’d been caught doing something shady. He muttered something to his friend and stood up, walking over to me with a face I couldn’t read. Calm. Cold. Way too calm.“Nova,” he said, like my name tasted bitter in his mouth.Okay. This wasn’t going to be a warm conversation. Noted.“We need to talk,” I said, keeping my voice level. If he thought I was going to fall apa

  • Nightmare turned love    Damn Hassle

The rest of the school day went… surprisingly basic. Except, you know, for the dozens of eyes I kept catching on me like I was on trial for high school treason. “Can they not?” I muttered, walking through the hallway. With Aiden. Yes. Aiden. Not Eli. I honestly don’t know how that happened either. One moment I was leaving class, and the next he was waiting for me like we were best friends in some weird teen fiction .Somehow, we just… walked to the cafeteria together. “Nova,” Aiden said, flashing that annoying grin, “you had what I’d call a public fallout with Jordan this morning, and now you’re walking with me. That’s enough to get the gossip blogs buzzing.” “First of all, Cross—it was not a fallout. He had every right to be upset. Second, I’m not walking with you. You’re walking with me. Get it right.” “Oh, please,” he smirked, draping an arm over my shoulder. “Same difference.” “What are you doing?” I stopped dead in my tracks, eyeing his arm like it was radioactive.

  • Nightmare turned love    Post talk

I left Aiden’s house feeling lighter than I expected. He walked me to the door, and we exchanged the most awkward goodbye ever—just a quiet nod and an even quieter "bye." But I didn’t mind. There was something peaceful about it, like we were finally breathing the same air again. The moment I stepped into my house, I shut the door and let out a sigh I didn’t even realize I was holding—“So you finally talked, huh?”I screamed.“Arnold?! What the actual hell?! Why are you sitting in the dark like a serial killer?!”He stood up and casually flipped the light on like he wasn’t just giving me a heart attack. “Relax. I fell asleep here, so I turned the lights off. You just woke me up with your dramatic-ass door slam.”“It wasn’t that loud,” I shot back.“Well, it woke me up. So yeah, it kinda was. Might as well lodge a noise complaint.”I rolled my eyes and brushed past him. “Not the time, Arnold.”“Waitttt—” he called out.“What?!”A grin broke across his face. “You’re back to being Nova.

  • Nightmare turned love    His truth

I don’t know what came over me when I asked him where he was. I wasn’t thinking. Actually, I stopped thinking the moment I saw his calls and texts.I barely remembered the cab ride. Just the sound of my own heartbeat pounding in my ears and the way I gripped the seat like it was the only thing keeping me grounded. He called. After the silence. The disappointment. After walking away again. He finally reached out.And I was running to him.God, what the hell was I doing? But even if my brain was screaming at me to turn around, my heart had already made its decision. I needed to hear it. The truth. For once — no guessing, no half-answers, no mixed signals. Just him being honest. When the cab pulled up in front of my house, I didn’t hesitate. I walked straight across the street, up to his door, already bracing myself to ring the bell — but before I could even reach for it, the door burst open like he’d been standing right behind it.Aiden stood there, hands shoved in his pockets, that usu
