Chapter Three

“Kid”

“Kid?”

I groggily sat up to the sound of knuckles to wood as Uncle Jesse knocked against the door.

“Huh?” I squinted at the light that seeped through the window.

“I know it’s a Sunday an all but its after lunch and I thought you would like to take a walk around town, go pick up that carpet and anything else you may need?” he shot through the closed door, at least he was respectful of my privacy.

“Err sure, I’ll be down once I’ve showered” I reached for my phone to see the time was almost two in the afternoon. Damn I really slept for that long?

“I will be downstairs when you’re ready” he announced before silence replaced his loud awakening.

I pulled myself off the bed, my body was aching a little, but nothing compared to how it was last night. I dragged my feet towards the door where my luggage sat, laying the case down I unzipped it before rummaging around my clothes. I was a British girl so the wardrobe I had was suitable for all year round but mostly the clothes I had in this suitcase where suitable for winter. I was for sure going to need to go shopping for some more suitable Texas style clothing.

The sun was bright out and I know from the little research I had done that Samsonville rarely had temperatures below twenty-three degrees, a huge change in the temperatures I was used too.

I picked a simple pair of skin-tight navy-blue jeans and a white V-neck cropped t-shirt, not much but the best outfit I currently owned. I needed a job If I was to buy a whole new wardrobe! Adding fresh underwear to my pile of clothes I headed out my room in search of the bathroom, I didn’t need to look far it was the door directly at the top of the stairs. I took a quick shower and brushed my teeth before heading back to my room to grab my phone and slip my white adidas trainers on.

I rooted in my duffel bag for my make-up case and headed straight for the mirror by the window. I added a quick few strokes of mascara to my lashes, touched on my eyebrows and added a nude gloss to my lips before combing my fingers through my hair. It was warm out, so I decided to throw my hair into a messy bun, tying it with a scrunchy and pulling a few strands of my curly brown hair out to frame my face. Looking at my reflection I didn’t resemble the everyday Texan girl, it was obvious I was a city girl with my large, hooped earrings on full display. hell, I’m sure the whole of samsonville would be able to detect that I was a British city girl.

My phone buzzed in my back pocket, I pulled it from my jean pocket to see a text from Natalie, scrap that more like a dozen. I pressed dial and headed out the door as it rang.

“It’s been a whole day and I’ve had no text, not nothing from you girl” she answered, and I grinned widely feeling so much comfort at hearing my best friend’s voice.

“I only woke up about an hour ago” I chuckled.

“Ah, shit I completely forgot about the time difference what time is it there?” she asked

“It’s coming up three in the afternoon. Lucky for me Uncle Jesse let me sleep in because let me tell you I was fucking exhausted. Worst flight of my entire life” I let out jogging down the stairs.

“Quit whining, you’re a lucky bitch. You get endless summer days and sexy American cowboys to ogle at all day, every day” she let out a breath as if she was fanning herself.

“You’re forgetting I don’t want a cowboy” I smiled through the phone as I entered the living room.

“Nah you want a road man, a specific road man with the name Ashton” she teased, and I couldn’t hold back the smile that grew bigger on my lips.

“don’t start man” I retorted my eyes catching Uncle Jesse with a coffee in hand as I enter the kitchen.

“Is that you ready to go kid?” he asked downing the last of the coffee in his mug.

“Ohh is that the hot cowboy uncle” Natalie cooed down the phone.

“Your gross, and I’m going to hang up now” I buttoned her before she could say anything worse, I’m sure she has a million ways to make me cringe right now.

I looked up from my phone awkwardly praying to the gods above that Uncle Jesse did not hear Natalie’s unnecessarily loud voice.

“You should get something to eat before we leave” he gestured to the fridge.

I smiled a silent greeting before opening the fridge, it was full to the brim with yoghurts and snack types of food. A variety of all different types of fruit juice, the whole entire bottom shelve was filled with cans of coca cola, sprite, plus some brands I was not familiar with, but you name it Uncle Jesse had it in his fridge.

“I wasn’t sure what you like so I just stocked up on a little of everything. we can pick more stuff up at the store if there’s anything you like that’s not there” he went on, he was really trying I give him that.

“It’s cool, I’m not a fussy eater or drinker” I took a can of coke and shut the fridge “oh but I may need to borrow some cash to buy some clothes. All I have is winter outfits and twenty odd degree heat is far from what I’m accustomed too” I added turning to face him.

“Sure thing kid, you can pick some stuff up while we are in town, you will need a couple of clothes suitable for school too” he added placing his mug in the sink.

“thanks” I smiled a thank you.

“Well let’s go” he backed out of the kitchen, grabbing his keys from the hook as we made our exit from the house.

Here is to day one in Samsonville Texas.
