Chapter 2

Author: Sunny Embrace
"Oh, she's just a bar hostess? Let's just leave. I don't even want to touch her."

The passersby who were helping me suddenly became repulsed by me.

Meanwhile, Liam stared down at me for a moment before finally extending a hand toward me as if he was doing me a favor.

"That's enough, I'll have the driver send you…"

"No need."

I avoided his touch and gritted my teeth through the pain while I got up.

"I'll be fine. I'll be going now."

Liam was taken aback. Just as he was about to explode with rage, he noticed the way I hobbled as I walked away.

His expression changed.

I wasn't the one who had been drinking last night.

He was the one drinking.

Somehow, he had forgotten about it.

He forgot how he came home drunk and how I made soup and even spoon-fed him to help him sober up.

He must have also forgotten how he wrapped his arms around me while mumbling Nora's name. As soon as he sobered up, he shoved me away.

I was thrown away with such force that I ended up twisting my leg. Even after a night's rest, I still could not walk properly.

After I had taken a few steps, he caught up and grabbed me.

He implored in a tender voice, "I'm sorry, I forgot about last night...

"Nora has been dealing with a lot of class tutorials and must have mistaken you for someone else.

"She's still young and doesn't think before she speaks. Don't hold it against her."

Even if Nora were blatantly at fault, Liam would still somehow find a way to defend her.

"Let me take you…"

"Oh no! Someone else has fainted!"

Liam's hand was just about to graze against me when he pulled away.

"Hey, young man! Forget about that girl over there! Hurry up and check on your wife!"

Without a moment's hesitation, Liam turned and ran toward Nora, leaving me behind.

With that, I braced through the chilling wind and hobbled to the hospital before I finally collapsed at the entrance of the emergency room.

When I woke up, I found myself in a hospital bed with an IV drip hanging over me.

"Ms. Dreyner, you must prioritize quality rest. You can't afford another stressful episode, if not…"

The doctor tried to be tactful about it and expected me to read between the lines.

I understood what he was trying to say.

I did not have much time left.

My body had burned through all of its lifespan ahead of schedule. I was running on the last of my life's essence.

After the doctor left, I pulled myself out of the bed and reached for my phone.

I was still halfway through texting that person before I passed out. Thankfully, I managed to send the text at the very last second.

He replied within seconds. [Okay. I'll pick you up at nine on Friday morning.]

A marriage license could be obtained in a measly ten seconds. And yet, Liam wanted me to give away ten months of my lifespan for it.

I slumped weakly against the pillow. With every breath I took, pain ran through my body, but I could not cry.

This had always been his nature.

One night, I got drunk and accidentally told him about the system.

He did not doubt me or interrogate me. Rather, he held me close and told me how much his heart ached for me, then promised to get the marriage license the very next day to alleviate my fears.

At the time, I still had a whole year and more to complete the mission. I was convinced I had it all under control.

I trusted him because he once dropped his research project and flew home to care for me when I was sick, even if it meant he could get fired.

Once, when we were in a car accident, his immediate reaction was to shield me with his body. His arm was embedded with shards of glass that almost left him disabled.

Once, we loved each other deeply.

That was, until Nora appeared out of nowhere and changed everything.

"Hey, Amelia, so it's true that you're here!"

Nora's chirpy voice pulled me out of my trance.

I turned toward her voice just in time to see her entering.

She wore a lamentable look while saying, "I'm sorry. I didn't mean what I said earlier today.

"I was hoping to tell Liam to take you to the hospital, but I ended up fainting too."

She approached me with her head lowered, then flashed a shy smile before announcing daintily, "Also… I really didn't mean to get pregnant with Liam's child.

"Won't you forgive me?"

I looked at the way she put a hand over her stomach. It felt as if I could hear thunder in my ears.

All the empty assurances Liam once made echoed in my ears.

"As I said, I only see her as a little sister. I will draw boundaries!"

"You are my wife, the only one for me. There is nothing to worry about!"

Before I could even respond, I was shoved by Liam, who had shown up out of nowhere.

"Let me explain! Don't hold it against her!"

Liam's lips were quivering. His shoulders began to droop as well.He gasped tragically, then turned to me to plead again, "You've only been with him for less than five months, but we have been together for five whole years…"I answered coolly, "And what about it? It didn't take you less than half a year to sleep with Nora too, did it?""No, that's not it!" Liam grew agitated and tried to take my hand. "I was never in a relationship with her. There's a reason I let her get closer to me…"I investigated everything she's done to you and cut her off for good. I swear I won't have anything to do with her again…"I shrank away from his touch and dismissed him icily, "Mr. Castle, I am not interested in hearing any more details of your infidelity."What happens to you or Nora from now on is none of my business."We're through. From now on, we have nothing to do with each other. So please stop involving yourself in my life with my lover."The color drained completely from his face."No

It was a foreign news outlet that broke the news of his engagement. The tabloids had embellished my relationship with Noah by sprinkling in all sorts of exaggerated details. In reality, my relationship with Noah had been rather simple and straightforward. We were practically childhood friends since our families were closely linked through business. After we graduated from the same university, we gradually fell out of touch. If it weren't for the system telling me there was someone else in the world who was already infatuated with me without me needing to court them, I never would have realized he even had feelings for me at all. When I was told of it, I was still d

I don't think I have ever seen you before."She doesn't have much time left. I give her a month at most. Liam stared at his phone screen in disbelief. There was no mistaking it. It was Amelia's number. But the man on the phone…"Who are you? Why are you using Amelia's phone?" He struggled to control the tone of his voice, "I want to speak to her!"The man answered candidly, "She's busy. She's in the shower right now."If you're calling to talk to her about the system, I believe I have been very clear with you. She doesn't need you anymore.""You're lying!"Liam's chest heaved violently. His breathing had become erratic. The mysterious man was living with Amelia and even knew about the system.Who on earth was he?"Who... Who exactly are you? You kidnapped her, didn't you?"Suddenly, the man fell silent. After some faint, rustling sound, it was my glacial voice that broke the silence."Kidnapping?"You're the only one who would do something like that. You, Liam Castle."Liam let out a breath of relief, then hurriedly started to explain, "Amelia, I admit it was wrong of me to

"I'd be careful if I were you, Amelia. Don't test me."Liam towered over me with his eyes bloodshot."If Nora loses so much as a single strand of hair, I swear I will never get married to you."He had always known just how much that marriage license meant to me, yet here he was, leveraging it against me to threaten me!"I'm not scared of you. Also, I told you I don't know where she is."I had had enough of him and slapped him across the face!"Liam, I had stopped loving you a long time ago. For the record, I don't even want that marriage license anymore!"Liam's face turned to the side from the slap. He grew incensed and seized my chin as a rabid look gleamed in his eyes."Is that so? Sure, you're not afraid of me…"Let's see how your mother feels!"With that, a dozen men filed into the room, pinned me to the ground, and started to tear at my clothes.I cried out, "What are you doing?!"Meanwhile, he turned on a nearby camera and hissed icily, "I'm going to livestream this

The IV needle was yanked out of my hand and left behind a streak of blood.I could feel my lower back slamming against the metal bed rail. The sudden pain made me break out in a cold sweat.Despite all that, Liam, the man who once prioritized me over everything else, was now guarding Nora nervously."I'd had too much to drink that night and gave in to temptation."It was all my fault. You can hit me or curse me, do whatever you want, but you can't lay a finger on her! She's pregnant!"He looked at me warily, as if I were some kind of criminal. All I did was produce a faint chuckle before stating wryly, "Well, congratulations to both of you."Since she's pregnant, make sure you take care of her so she can give birth without problems."Liam's expression stiffened."Amelia, you…"Nora began to cry, "Amelia, please... It sounds like you're saying that to humiliate me..."Then, she suddenly rushed up to take my hand and vowed, "Once the baby is born, I'll leave! I won't get in be
