Chapter 1

As soon as I finished talking to the system, Liam Castle finally hung up on Nora Hepburn and stepped inside the house from the balcony.

He was still smiling.

"Sorry, Nora was telling me about how she wanted ice cream from that newly opened place. She asked me to get some for her after work.

"Also, don't forget to cancel the appointment this Friday," he remarked candidly, as if the constant delays were not costing me my literal lifespan.

Whenever Nora wanted anything at all from him, he would set everything aside and attend to her like a top priority.

I did not reply and stayed silent instead.

"What is it? Are you upset again?"

Noticing my prolonged silence, a hint of impatience crept into his voice.

"Amelia, we've been through this so many times. If you're not sick of it yet, I sure am.

"Behave, would you? Nobody is going to swoop in and steal that marriage license from you.

"Quit the nonsense. You're only embarrassing yourself."

I reached for my phone and cancelled the Friday appointment and replied calmly, "Okay."

For some reason, he seemed taken aback by my reaction.

I could recognize the stark surprise in his eyes. He was in disbelief.

I offered a faint smile before walking out of the room without another word.

He was right. We had been through this nineteen times already.

At first, I would become hysterical and beside myself with rage. Eventually, I became numb.

I was truly numb to it all.

Since he did not intend to marry me, there was no point in keeping up the farcical act.

After that, I took a taxi to the office.

The moment I stepped into the HR department, I overheard a round of gossip.

"Did you hear? Amelia took a day off to get her marriage registered again!"

"Hasn't that professor boyfriend of hers rejected her nine times already? When is she going to give up?"

"She's insane! Imagine being shameless enough to force a man to marry you!"

"Professor Castle is a wonderful man. I wonder why he ended up with her of all people!"

Their derisive remarks were clearly directed at me. However, I was completely unfazed because I had been hollowed out by this point.

"I'm here to hand in my resignation letter."

A sudden silence fell over the room.

Without warning, they burst into another, louder round of gossiping.

"She's not taking the breakup well, is she? Or maybe she's quitting to get his attention!"

"Either way, it's disgusting what she's doing…"

While they continued to mock me and offer me false pity, I walked out of the office without any expression.

Suddenly, without warning, I doubled over and coughed up a mouthful of blood.

I felt like my chest was split open, as if a knife had been wedged inside.

Just as I looked up, I saw none other than Liam. He had his arms wrapped around Nora and was in the middle of gently wiping an ice cream smudge from the corner of her mouth.

The agony I felt right then was far worse than any heartbreak.

"Quick, someone call 911!"

Several passersby noticed and rushed to help me, causing a commotion that drew Liam's attention.

"Amelia?!"

The moment our eyes met, he gasped. Then, he sprinted toward me.

"What's going on? Are you feeling—"

"I'm so sorry, Amelia! It's all my fault!"

Nora interjected with a shrill cry before he could finish his sentence.

"You must have had a stomach hemorrhage because you drank too much with those men at the club last night!

"I'm sorry... I wanted to tell you not to go with them, but you seemed to be all over them and having so much fun with them…"

Upon hearing this, Liam's tense hand turned lax and dropped to his side.

He turned to me with a disappointed look on his face.

"Amelia, how long are you going to keep acting?

"Why do you enjoy causing so much trouble?"

When I looked into his eyes with the taste of blood still filling my mouth, I could not make a sound.

Prior to this, Nora had pushed me down the stairs.

I tumbled down forty steps and ended up bleeding all over.

When she cried and accused me of throwing myself down the stairs because my attempt at sabotaging her failed, Liam believed her without needing much convincing.

He accused me of being a devious schemer and made me stay at the house for three whole days with a broken leg before finally allowing a doctor to attend to me.

The same thing had happened again. He chose to believe her.

Liam's lips were quivering. His shoulders began to droop as well.He gasped tragically, then turned to me to plead again, "You've only been with him for less than five months, but we have been together for five whole years…"I answered coolly, "And what about it? It didn't take you less than half a year to sleep with Nora too, did it?""No, that's not it!" Liam grew agitated and tried to take my hand. "I was never in a relationship with her. There's a reason I let her get closer to me…"I investigated everything she's done to you and cut her off for good. I swear I won't have anything to do with her again…"I shrank away from his touch and dismissed him icily, "Mr. Castle, I am not interested in hearing any more details of your infidelity."What happens to you or Nora from now on is none of my business."We're through. From now on, we have nothing to do with each other. So please stop involving yourself in my life with my lover."The color drained completely from his face."No

It was a foreign news outlet that broke the news of his engagement. The tabloids had embellished my relationship with Noah by sprinkling in all sorts of exaggerated details. In reality, my relationship with Noah had been rather simple and straightforward. We were practically childhood friends since our families were closely linked through business. After we graduated from the same university, we gradually fell out of touch. If it weren't for the system telling me there was someone else in the world who was already infatuated with me without me needing to court them, I never would have realized he even had feelings for me at all. When I was told of it, I was still d

I don't think I have ever seen you before."She doesn't have much time left. I give her a month at most. If you have any conscience at all, I'd advise you to spend more time with her."Liam felt as if all the noise in the world were muted. The enormous stack of medical reports sliced at his skin like tiny daggers. How had he failed to notice? When he started to recal

Liam stared at his phone screen in disbelief. There was no mistaking it. It was Amelia's number. But the man on the phone…"Who are you? Why are you using Amelia's phone?" He struggled to control the tone of his voice, "I want to speak to her!"The man answered candidly, "She's busy. She's in the shower right now."If you're calling to talk to her about the system, I believe I have been very clear with you. She doesn't need you anymore.""You're lying!"Liam's chest heaved violently. His breathing had become erratic. The mysterious man was living with Amelia and even knew about the system.Who on earth was he?"Who... Who exactly are you? You kidnapped her, didn't you?"Suddenly, the man fell silent. After some faint, rustling sound, it was my glacial voice that broke the silence."Kidnapping?"You're the only one who would do something like that. You, Liam Castle."Liam let out a breath of relief, then hurriedly started to explain, "Amelia, I admit it was wrong of me to

"I'd be careful if I were you, Amelia. Don't test me."Liam towered over me with his eyes bloodshot."If Nora loses so much as a single strand of hair, I swear I will never get married to you."He had always known just how much that marriage license meant to me, yet here he was, leveraging it against me to threaten me!"I'm not scared of you. Also, I told you I don't know where she is."I had had enough of him and slapped him across the face!"Liam, I had stopped loving you a long time ago. For the record, I don't even want that marriage license anymore!"Liam's face turned to the side from the slap. He grew incensed and seized my chin as a rabid look gleamed in his eyes."Is that so? Sure, you're not afraid of me…"Let's see how your mother feels!"With that, a dozen men filed into the room, pinned me to the ground, and started to tear at my clothes.I cried out, "What are you doing?!"Meanwhile, he turned on a nearby camera and hissed icily, "I'm going to livestream this

The IV needle was yanked out of my hand and left behind a streak of blood.I could feel my lower back slamming against the metal bed rail. The sudden pain made me break out in a cold sweat.Despite all that, Liam, the man who once prioritized me over everything else, was now guarding Nora nervously."I'd had too much to drink that night and gave in to temptation."It was all my fault. You can hit me or curse me, do whatever you want, but you can't lay a finger on her! She's pregnant!"He looked at me warily, as if I were some kind of criminal. All I did was produce a faint chuckle before stating wryly, "Well, congratulations to both of you."Since she's pregnant, make sure you take care of her so she can give birth without problems."Liam's expression stiffened."Amelia, you…"Nora began to cry, "Amelia, please... It sounds like you're saying that to humiliate me..."Then, she suddenly rushed up to take my hand and vowed, "Once the baby is born, I'll leave! I won't get in be
