Chapter 3

Author: Sunny Embrace
The IV needle was yanked out of my hand and left behind a streak of blood.

I could feel my lower back slamming against the metal bed rail. The sudden pain made me break out in a cold sweat.

Despite all that, Liam, the man who once prioritized me over everything else, was now guarding Nora nervously.

"I'd had too much to drink that night and gave in to temptation.

"It was all my fault. You can hit me or curse me, do whatever you want, but you can't lay a finger on her! She's pregnant!"

He looked at me warily, as if I were some kind of criminal.

All I did was produce a faint chuckle before stating wryly, "Well, congratulations to both of you.

"Since she's pregnant, make sure you take care of her so she can give birth without problems."

Liam's expression stiffened.

"Amelia, you…"

Nora began to cry, "Amelia, please... It sounds like you're saying that to humiliate me..."

Then, she suddenly rushed up to take my hand and vowed, "Once the baby is born, I'll leave! I won't get in between you two!

"I'm not worthy of that… I should never have been so presumptuous about wanting a family for myself…"

With her hands over her face, she turned and ran out of the hospital room.

Liam immediately chased after her, but not before hurling one last complaint at me.

"Why did you say that? Don't you know you're upsetting her?

"You're always scheming to hurt her!"

With that, silence once again befell the room.

Just as the pain began to subside, my phone rang.

It was him.

"After we get the marriage license, would you be willing to meet my parents overseas?"

I was taken aback and could not provide an answer.

"It's okay if you don't want to, I'll tell them—"

I said, "Sure, I'll go with you."

I could sense him holding his breath on the other end of the phone. When he spoke again, I could hear the cheerfulness in his voice.

Before we could continue the conversation, Liam's voice filtered through the door from outside.

"Who did you say you were going to leave with?"

I did a double take, then hung up.

"Nothing, I just have a business trip coming up."

He entered my room, then studied my expression without managing to extract anything from it. With that, he suppressed the unsettling feeling inside him.

"Sure. In that case, we can extend the marriage registration again, since Nora is pregnant."

His voice then softened, "Even though it was an accident, what's done is done, and I have to take responsibility.

"Please ask the system for another ten months' extension. We can get married after Nora gives birth."

Though the ward had a heater to keep warm, I felt an indescribable chill run through me.

Judging by the way Liam's expression remained unchanged, anyone would think he was only providing me a cursory notice rather than trying to have a conversation with me.

Everything, to him, was so trivial.

"That adds up to twenty months. That's nearly two years of my life."

I produced a derisive laugh, then asked, "Liam, is my life really worth so little to you?"

He seemed hurt by the accusation.

After he looked to the side to avoid my gaze, he dismissed my question, "What's two years, anyway? The average lifespan today is up to seventy years old!

"You're only losing two years of your life. Think about how young Nora is. Would it be right to let her shoulder all of this alone? Besides…"

He snuck me a look before continuing, "If you want to complete the mission, who else could you possibly marry but me?"

All the strength drained out of me when I stared at him, the man whom I had loved for five years.

"Fine."

Without further argument or disappointment, I obliged his request.

This had a reverse effect and flustered him.

For a fleeting moment, he had a sense that I didn't care about him at all.

However, a phone call from Nora effectively dispelled his concerns.

I assumed that was it, that this was going to be our last encounter before I left him.

Little did I know, life had a way of throwing a curveball.

The day before I was about to leave him, Nora was kidnapped.

Liam had me captured because he suspected I was the one behind it.

He claimed to hear my voice in the background of the ransom note the kidnappers had sent.

Liam's lips were quivering. His shoulders began to droop as well.He gasped tragically, then turned to me to plead again, "You've only been with him for less than five months, but we have been together for five whole years…"I answered coolly, "And what about it? It didn't take you less than half a year to sleep with Nora too, did it?""No, that's not it!" Liam grew agitated and tried to take my hand. "I was never in a relationship with her. There's a reason I let her get closer to me…"I investigated everything she's done to you and cut her off for good. I swear I won't have anything to do with her again…"I shrank away from his touch and dismissed him icily, "Mr. Castle, I am not interested in hearing any more details of your infidelity."What happens to you or Nora from now on is none of my business."We're through. From now on, we have nothing to do with each other. So please stop involving yourself in my life with my lover."The color drained completely from his face."No

The picture attached to the article was of a stranger at the center of the frame. He was smiling faintly, with his eyes creased into a crescent shape. Then, there was a person standing next to him with her hands locked around his.It was none other than Amelia herself. The Meville family had moved abroad years ago. It was a foreign news outlet that broke the news of his engagement. The tabloids had embellished my relationship with Noah by sprinkling in all sorts of exaggerated details. In reality, my relationship with Noah had been rather simple and straightforward. We were practically childhood friends since our families were closely linked through business. After we graduated from the same university, we gradually fell out of touch. If it weren't for the system telling me there was someone else in the world who was already infatuated with me without me needing to court them, I never would have realized he even had feelings for me at all. When I was told of it, I was still d

The moment he read the name "Amelia Dreyner" written on the document, he felt as if he had been electrocuted. His first thought was that this was part of some sick joke Amelia had left behind. Then, he rushed to the hospital and handed the medical records to the doctor. After the doctor briefed him on the diagnosis, he finally realized just how terribly wrong he had been. The doctor stated regrettably, "The patient's condition is deteriorating at a rate far beyond our initial forecast."She's been here for several rounds of chemotherapy, but the results have been far from ideal."Are you a family member of hers? I don't think I have ever seen you before."She doesn't have much time left. I give her a month at most. If you have any conscience at all, I'd advise you to spend more time with her."Liam felt as if all the noise in the world were muted. The enormous stack of medical reports sliced at his skin like tiny daggers. How had he failed to notice? When he started to recal

Liam stared at his phone screen in disbelief. There was no mistaking it. It was Amelia's number. But the man on the phone…"Who are you? Why are you using Amelia's phone?" He struggled to control the tone of his voice, "I want to speak to her!"The man answered candidly, "She's busy. She's in the shower right now."If you're calling to talk to her about the system, I believe I have been very clear with you. She doesn't need you anymore.""You're lying!"Liam's chest heaved violently. His breathing had become erratic. The mysterious man was living with Amelia and even knew about the system.Who on earth was he?"Who... Who exactly are you? You kidnapped her, didn't you?"Suddenly, the man fell silent. After some faint, rustling sound, it was my glacial voice that broke the silence."Kidnapping?"You're the only one who would do something like that. You, Liam Castle."Liam let out a breath of relief, then hurriedly started to explain, "Amelia, I admit it was wrong of me to

"I'd be careful if I were you, Amelia. Don't test me."Liam towered over me with his eyes bloodshot."If Nora loses so much as a single strand of hair, I swear I will never get married to you."He had always known just how much that marriage license meant to me, yet here he was, leveraging it against me to threaten me!"I'm not scared of you. Also, I told you I don't know where she is."I had had enough of him and slapped him across the face!"Liam, I had stopped loving you a long time ago. For the record, I don't even want that marriage license anymore!"Liam's face turned to the side from the slap. He grew incensed and seized my chin as a rabid look gleamed in his eyes."Is that so? Sure, you're not afraid of me…"Let's see how your mother feels!"With that, a dozen men filed into the room, pinned me to the ground, and started to tear at my clothes.I cried out, "What are you doing?!"Meanwhile, he turned on a nearby camera and hissed icily, "I'm going to livestream this
