Chapter 18

Author: Zesty Zing
Though surrounded, Rebecca did not panic. But the moment the wallet left her hand, something inside her tightened. "Give it back!"

Oscar had given it to her.

"Oh? Nervous now?" Yvonne Selford, the ringleader, let out a cold laugh. I think you stole our money. Bet it's inside this wallet."

"I didn't!" Rebecca lunged for it, but Yvonne had five girls flanking her.

Rebecca was small, underfed, light as a reed. Before her fingers could brush the leather, someone slapped her hand away.

  • Nine Ungrateful Sisters   Chapter 362

Stanley's voice made Clara feel like she had been slapped. She went still. Only moments earlier, she had been chatting happily, stealing glances at his profile and reading every subtle shift in his expression. He had worn a faint smile, tilting his head toward her now and then. That alone had been enough to keep her talking. She had just been thinking of another topic to bring up when everything fell apart. Yes, the dog had darted out suddenly, but it was still far ahead of them. Stanley hadn't been driving fast. He could have slowed the car to a smooth stop long before reaching it.Clara had even thought he didn't need to brake at all. At his current speed, the dog would have been gone by the time they reached that stretch of road. There had been no danger. That was why her tone had stayed light, casual, the same way it would if they were in the middle of a conversation and a bird happened to pass the window. It was just a passing comment before continuing where they left off.S

Now Amara was steering away from Rebecca too. It was no wonder their family had fallen into this state.Amara had never been good at reading a room. Then again, maybe that was understandable.Oscar had lived under the Chamberlains' roof for years without drawing attention to himself, quietly doing more for the family than any of them had ever realized.Amara had spent her life in calm, sheltered waters. How could she possibly imagine that their rise traced back to an unremarkable younger brother living under the same roof?Something in Stanley's expression made Amara shift uneasily in her seat. "Why are you looking at me like that?""Has anyone ever told you you're beautiful? One look at you and my heart forgets how to behave."The words came easily, light and natural.Heat rose to Amara's face before she could stop it. No one had ever spoken to her that way."Stanley, you're teasing me. Clara is the real beauty in this family."She smoothly pushed Clara into the conversation.

When Stanley met the sisters again, only three were present: Amara, Clara, and Hilda.Diana was looking after Elara and Freya, while Giana stayed with Irene. In Amara's assessment, Diana and Giana were also less naturally sociable than the other two.Hilda could brighten a room without effort. Clara could work every angle within it."Miss Amara." Stanley greeted Amara with a simple acknowledgment and gave the other two a nod.Amara smiled as she deliberately closed the distance between them. "No need to be so formal, Stanley. Just call me Amara."Stanley accepted the shift without hesitation. "Of course, Amara."Clara and Hilda stepped in quickly behind her."Clara works for me.""And I'm Hilda. Stanley, you're even better looking in person. Amara tried to describe you yesterday, and I thought she was exaggerating. Now I realize she just doesn't have the vocabulary for it."It was Hilda's first time meeting him, and she laid it on thicker than anyone else had.Stanley smiled

"Enough. I don't want to hear another word. If you want to leave Silverton, then leave now. If you miss Oscar so much, go find him and move in with him."Silverton is where our family built everything. The old estate is where our progenitors rest. I won't retreat, I won't run, and I will find a way through this."If you want to run and hide, fine. Hand back the Chamberlain name, just like Oscar did."The words hit hard. The sisters stared at Amara in disbelief before turning to Irene, who had fallen silent on the floor, her jaw tight and her eyes lowered. No one spoke.Irene was young, running on anger, and hurt. There was no point trying to reason with her in this state. When someone that age dug in against you, logic stopped mattering. You cornered them instead. You stripped away every exit until the only path left was the one you needed them to take. She was fighting on instinct, not conviction. Push her all the way to the wall, and eventually she would figure out which choic

  • Nine Ungrateful Sisters   Chapter 358

When Irene had been going at Amara hammer and tongs, the other sisters had kept their distance. When it came to a dispute between the youngest and the eldest, right or wrong, the youngest always ended up taking the blame. She was young. She didn't know the full story. She had only just started university, so what could she really understand? The outburst was grief looking for somewhere to land. She had been saying whatever came to mind, without reason or restraint. The sisters had been waiting for her to finish so they could set her straight.Amara had given everything to this family. She didn't deserve an attack like that. However, before any of them could speak, something changed.Irene's fury folded in on itself, and in its place was something small and wounded. She was no longer lashing out at Amara. She was talking about what had been done to her.Every sister in that room knew what had happened to her at that school the day before. It was a burden no woman should ever have

  • Nine Ungrateful Sisters   Chapter 357

Back when the family stood at its peak, Amara still couldn't stand Oscar. If Irene herself had been adopted, and the family had fallen into crisis, would Amara have cast her out as well? Or gone even further and used her as a bargaining piece? A chip to cash in whenever the situation demanded it?"Nothing to say? Then answer this. Why did you drive Oscar out of the family?"That bastard over there did one terrible thing after another, and every single time, you sent him to the correction program. You never threw him out. Oscar forged marriage contracts. The damage wasn't even that serious, yet you cast him aside."Wasn't it because he didn't have our blood in his veins? Because he couldn't carry on the family line?"The composure drained from Amara's face along with all its color.Driving Oscar out had been her decision. His ties to them had run deep, but he was not a family member. She had needed to move carefully to secure Jason's place in the household. She had needed her sis
