Lilly's POV

Dawn had arrived faster than I expected. We listened and noted that it was quiet and the perfect time to move. Scarlet and John went out first, glanced around, then gave us the okay to join them.

"What is the safe zone?" I questioned as we got into our formation, now with me in front of Scarlet.

"It is a compound that is letting in survivors we heard about from the camp we were previously in." Mary was the one to answer me quietly as she followed behind John.

John glanced back at me and then returned to watching around us for any danger. I knew he wasn't as trusting as Mary or Scarlet but I felt like I haven't really given him a reason to not trust me and was taking a little offense in the way he was always watching me, but then again in these times I guess you really can't trust anyone.

After what seemed like four or five miles I noticed a large metal gate in the distance. The gate stood around twelve feet high made of welded steel plates and rusted fencing. Old highway signs were bolted into it and were being used for extra reinforcement. Razor wire was looped at the top with pieces of fabric and plastic swaying in the wind like flags, and at it's center two metal doors chained together with locks and cables. In some places you could tell someone or something was trying to get in but had failed.

"I think we made it to the safe zone," Mary sobbed out as she held her shaking hand to her mouth. John turned towards everyone with a wobbly smile and grabbed Mary's hand to press his lips gently to her bruised knuckles.

"Finally," Scarlet let out a shaky breath. "Maybe we can finally have a minute of peace."

"Hopefully, it has been a crazy few days and I could really use a minute to catch my mind up on everything."

Maybe I shouldn't have spoken so quickly as a glare from the top of the gate caught my eye. I knew we wouldn't be welcomed instantly so I should've expected the gun aimed at us.

"We aren't infected!" John shouted to whoever was behind the gun. "We are just looking for sanctuary! We have my wife, a toddler and two young women in my group!"

The gun lowed slightly.

"How did you know to come here?" A deep voice shouted back.

"We heard of a safe zone from a camp we were in before it was raided and we had to leave," John seemed to gain confidence as he continued answering. "We have traveled a long way and would like to discuss our staying here, if that is possible?"

The metal doors on the gate creaked as they were unlocked and opened slowly. A tall male with blonde hair pushed back and gun in his right hand strolled about halfway to us and stopped.

"I am Liam Graves," the man voiced "I am the one you would consider a leader in the compound."

"Liam this is Mary, Lilac, Scarlet, Lilly and I am John. We would like to seek sanctuary with you and we will contribute any way we can."

"You would need to go through a process of making sure you aren't infected before we can offer you a place within the compound." Liam seemed to be open into letting us stay. "Let me escort you to the tent just inside the gate, that is where we will have you strip and be searched for any bites the look infected."

We all looked at each other and slightly nodded.

"Of course. Lead the way." I replied for everyone.

I took the first steps toward Liam putting myself in the line of danger in case this was all a trap. I couldn't risk the lives of the group that had kindly taken me in especially a child.

Everyone followed behind me glancing around as we made our way inside the gate toward a dark green military looking tent. The gate doors closed and I turned to watch as a man and young woman started locking the doors securely.

"We make sure our people are safe here," Liam noticed me watching as the doors were locked tight.

"I would hope so," I whispered more to myself but I noticed how his mouth turned down at my words.

The enterance of the tent had clear plastic flaps that were pulled to the side so we could enter. A woman and man were at a white table in front of what looked like makeshift dressing rooms.

"This is Jake and Alice." Liam explained, "They will be the ones to look over you and make sure you are clean from any infection."

Jake and Alice gave a nod to Liam and ushered us forward taking us one at a time into the dressing room. Of course Jake only had John to search and Alice had the rest of us.

Alice is extremely friendly and talked about what her and Jake are responsible for in the compound. It turns out Alice is a caretaker here at the compound, she helps with the children that are here and teaches them basic school subjects during certain days. Jake is a guard for the front gates and also volunteers to help Alice with medical tasks that need to be done.

"They are clean Boss," Jake informs Liam as I step out of the room with Alice.

"Okay, so let me explain a few things first before we get you all assigned to lodging." Liam rubs a hand down his face then continues, "Everyone that stays here contributes in some way. We can get you assigned tomorrow if you would like the night to think about what you would like to do. We have around fifty people that live here and we have been getting a few survivors every other day, it seems word spread fast. So on top of you contributing to what you want we also are taking shifts to expand the compound. We have three meals a day starting with breakfast at 8 AM, lunch at 12 PM and dinner at 6 PM. I can answer any questions tomorrow when we discuss your daily jobs here. Now if you follow me I will take you to were you will be staying."

I followed him out the tent and down what seemed to be a man made dirt path until we reached a area that had cabins and what looked like tree houses. Scarlet jogged up to me and asked, "Want to be put together in a treehouse?"

I nodded to her thinking it was for the best and turned back towards Liam to let him know.

"I figured you ladys would like to be housed together. We have a two bedroom treehouse that would be perfect for you. And for John and Mary I have a cabin that has two bedrooms also for Lilac to stay with you."

"Thank you." Mary didn't bother to hide her sobs.

Before we reached the first lodge a scream tore through the silence and Liam sprinted towards the left.

Before I could follow I heard the whisper,

"Tether, I will find you.”

  • No Escape!   Chapter 14

Riven’s POVShe haunts me, even when I close my eyes, her voice is like music and her name is a sweet escape. Lilly. The moment the world collapsed, when the sky tore and the realms bled together, I felt her awaken. Like a pulse something ancient and beautiful flickered to life inside the human realm, it was the tether. They whispered of her even in the depths of my kingdom, the humans who dreamed of her light and the demons who recoiled from her power. Then there was me, foolish and hungry I followed that whisper like a moth drawn to flame. That was the first night that I dreamt of her. The dream never changed, she stands in the ruins of a city, pale fire around her wrists and her eyes glowing with something she doesn't yet understand. I reach for her through the smoke and my fingers brush her skin then for a quick moment she looks at me, then she is gone.Every night since I have searched for her again, I thought I was going crazy at first a side effect of the realms merging. But

  • No Escape!   Chapter 13

Lilly's POV The sun climbed higher over the settlement and for the first time since the world collapsed it almost felt like a normal morning. The air was calm as the streets were alive with movement, people carried baskets of vegetables to their houses and the dining area. After meeting with Kael that morning I hadn't been able to stop thinking about him. His voice and presence lingered in my mind and refused to go away. But I forced them away, there were too many people pretending life hadn't shattered outside these walls. Liam had gone to speak to one of the guards about what working with them was like, leaving Scarlet, Mary and me to explore. John took Lilac to the house saying she needed a nap. We followed a dirt path lined with flowers growing from carefully tended soil. Scarlet bent down to touch a daisy, her fingers trembling slightly. "I forgot what these looked like," she murmured. "Feels like another lifetime," I said. "It was."A few people smiled at us as we passed

  • No Escape!   Chapter 12

Lilly's POVMorning came as the sun was illuminating a soft light through the window. For the first time since the world collapsed I wake up to peace instead of screams and chaos. The curtains in the room were thin so I felt the warmth of the sun on my face enjoying every minute of it. The memories flashed through my mind, the ambush, the settlement, the strange light that comes from me and the gorgeous man wgho I can't keep away from my thoughts, Kael. His name sent shivers down my spine, not in a bad way, and I knew there was a connection between us that I would need to confront at some point. Scarlet stirred from her bed rolling over with a groan. "Morning already?""Yes it seems like it."She blinked at the light and said, "We didn't die in our sleep so I am taking that as a win."I smiled slightly but my nerves were going crazy, there was something about this place that felt off and unnatural but safe. When we emerged into the kitchen Mary and John were already there with Lilac

  • No Escape!   Chapter 11

Lilly's POV The first thing I noticed was the silence, after the screams, the fire and the panic of running for our lives the quiet of the house felt wrong. The others were already settling in after a quick rest, we all woke up around three in the morning and decided to pick rooms. I leaned against the doorway every one of my muscles aching and hurt, my ribs were bruised from one of the demons. Even now I can still hear the demon saying saying, "Found you," right before Liam had silenced it. I shook the thought away and glanced around the house, it was perfect, unreal even. It had clean floors, working lights, blankets that emailed of laundry soap and there was a fruit bowl on the dining room table with actual fresh fruit. I had forgotten what fresh fruit looked like already. "How is this possible?" I muttered under my breath. Scarlet caught my eye from across the room. "Are you thinking the same thing that I am?""That this is too good to be true?""Yeah. Exactly that."We shar

  • No Escape!   Chapter 10

Lilly’s POV We walked for hours, the cracked highway stretched endlessly ahead, each mile marker was covered in dust with splatters of blood. The wind was blowing hard enough to push us back towards the compound we've left behind. Chicago was a shrinking shadow behind us with it's skyscrapers leaning instead of standing tall. The road south twisted between forests that were empty of leaves from the trees that were charred and split open. John led the way with his rifle raised with Scarlet walking beside him scanning every ditch and broke down car. Liam was at the rear, silent and tense, his eyes always drifting towards me as though he expected me to burst into flames and maybe he wasn't wrong. Ever since the attack at the compound when I released the light I can feel something pulsing under my skin like a second heart beating. It didn't hurt exactly just uncomfortable like it was waiting to be set free. The air shifted around us. "Hold up," Liam muttered, his hand going up in a

  • No Escape!   Chapter 9

Lilly’s POVThe morning came slow and heavy, dragging light down the tunnel like it didn’t want to touch the world above. We’d made it through the night—barely. No one really slept. Every sound echoed: dripping water, shuffling feet, Lilac’s quiet whimpers in her sleep. I sat against the concrete wall, staring at the small circle of light from the hatch above us, wondering what was left.Liam was the first to move. His face was drawn, streaked with soot, jaw tight. The calm authority he’d carried before the attack was still there but dulled and weighed down.“We go up in pairs,” he said, voice rough from exhaustion. “Stay quiet. If they’re still out there, we don’t draw attention.”Scarlet nodded, checking her pistol. John followed with a tired grunt, his arm wrapped around Mary’s shoulders protectively.I waited until they climbed first, then looked to Liam. “You think anyone else made it?”His gaze flicked toward the ceiling hatch, then back to me. “No.” A pause. “But we’ll make it
