Lilly's POV

As I put the whispers into the back of my mind until another day I saw Liam sprint toward the scream. His boots kicking up dirt from the path, I didn't think I just followed him.

"Lilly, wait!"Scarlet shouted from behind me, but I was already moving.

The scream came towards the cabins near the west end of the compound and when we rounded the corner torchlight and chaos filled my vision. Two men were dragging a woman back from the gate as blood was running down her arm. Just beyond them the metal doors were being slammed over and over from the outside as something tried to break through.

"Hollowed!" Someone screamed, "They're inside the compound!"

The words seem to freeze everyone as Liam raised his rifle and barked out orders, "Get everyone back! Jake, lock down the inner yard! Alice, get the wounded to the medical tent!"

Jake sprinted towards the wall as he fumbled with the floodlight switches the gate groaned, the chains snapping apart one by one. I saw pale fingers clawing through the gaps it seemed like there was dozens of them.

"They shouldn't be able to get in this far I thought," Scarlet muttered, drawing a pistol she must have picked up somewhere, "The fences.."

"Fences don't stop desperation," Liam growled.

The gate burst open and the Hallowed poured through bloated, gray skinned bodies, mouths open in shrieks that made my stomach twist. The hollowed slammed into the guards first, dragging them through the mud. Then all you hear is gunfire erupting, it was deafening, like flashes of light cutting through the storm.

"Run!" Liam yelled, he grabbed my arm and shoved me back towards the cabins, "Get to the tunnel on the southern end! Fast!"

I stumbled, my heart pounding out of my chest. Scarlet was firing her gun beside me as we ran, her shots hitting the Hollowed, but they were to fast and too many.

"Lilly! Scarlet!" Mary called, "What's happening over there?"

We made it back to where the three of them waited for us before we took off after Liam. I shouted, "Go and head for the tunnel it is straight ahead!"

John tightened his grip on his axe and pushed them ahead, all I could see was the sheer panic flicker behind his eyes, but he didn't argue. He never did when it came to Mary and Lilac always thinking of their safety first. I turned to cover their backs, firing one of the rifles I found on a fallen guard. The recoil tore through my shoulder, but I was able to get two Hollowed before more climbed over them snarling.

I fell to the side as something slammed into me throwing me into the mud. Cold, wet hands circled my throat in a clumsy way as the stench of decay hit me so hard I had to fight not to vomit. All I could see was teeth snapping inches from my face when I jammed the rifle between us the best I could and pushed, screaming. It's empty white eyes locked onto mine and for a heartbeat something inside me snapped.

Heat built in my chest, not fire, something older maybe ancient.

I thrust my hand up and a pulse of light burst from my palm, burning through the creatures skull. The hollowed collapsed leaving only the hiss of rain on burning flesh.

I couldn't do much but lay there shaking, staring at my hand.

"What was that?" Scarlet gasped, grabbing me by the arm and pulling me up with her.

"I don't," my voice caught, "I don't know."

Not giving it another thought we ran past the burning cabins and the screams. Ahead Liam was clearing a path with brutal force, yelling at people to move. He shot a Hollowed mid lunge, kicked away from him without breaking stride. Liam's face was severely cut with blood leaking from his temple.

When he saw me, something flashed in his eyes I don't know if it was fear or awe, "Keep everyone together, Lilly! Don't you dare stop!"

He turned to cover our backside all while shouting orders at Jake, who was still at the gate tower trying to hold it with two other guards.

"Jake! Fall back!" Liam roared.

I watched as Jake ignored Liams orders and the Hollowed surged up the ladder and pulled him down. Jake's scream was brief and horrible before there was silence.

Liam cursed and pulled a Bernadette from his belt, "Get inside the tunnel! Now!"

"Liam!"

"Go!"

I grabbed Scarlet, Mary, John and Lilac and shoved them towards the storm drain at the edge of the compound. The entrance was half hidden behind sandbags, a steel door barely wide enough for one person at a time. We pushed Lilac through first, Mary was next, then Scarlet followed with John behind her.

When I turned around Liam was standing in the rain pulling the pin of the grenade, The explosion ripped through the compound and the shockwave slammed into my chest throwing me against the tunnel door. Dust and heat filled the air as the world seemed to get louder, then everything went quiet except for the ringing in my ears.

"Liam!" I shouted, coughing. "Liam!"

"I said to go!" He stumbled through the smoke a moment later, coughing with his hair plastered to his forehead.

He shoved me through the door and slammed it behind us, making sure to slide the thick metal bar into place. The tunnel seemed to shake as something hit it from the outside and the sounds of the Hollowed grew muffled even faint, but they didn't stop.

Inside the tunnel lanterns flickered weakly, and the air was damp and heavy, smelling of mildew. We all stood there, breathing hard, soaked from the rain and covered in mud and black sludge from the Hollowed.

"Everyone make it here?" Liam rasped.

Mary was the one to nod, still holding onto Lilac, John's hand on her shoulder trembled. Scarlet's eyes darted between me and Liam, her face extremely pale.

"Where's Alice?" She whispered.

Liam's silence was answer enough but he shoot his head slightly.

Everyone was silent after that and we started down the tunnel in a line, the only sound was the water sloshing under our boots. My hands still felt like they were burning from whatever I had done earlier. I couldn't stop thinking about the light, it hadn't come from outside, it came from inside me.

As we walked I felt a presence it seemed like it was close, following just beyond the edge of the lantern light.

I turned and squinted into the darkness, and there for the briefest moment a figure stood among the shadows. He had broad shoulders, armor that shimmered like the night sky and his hair as black as a raven.

His eyes found mine, golden and alive with heat, then he was gone.

"Lilly?" Scarlet's voice called out to me, "Are you okay?"

I blinked, forcing my breathing to slow and answered, "Yeah. I'm fine."

But I really wasn't because the whisper had returned, soft, low, snaking through the darkness.

"Tether.."

This time it didn't sound distant, it sounded like it was coming from inside my head

  • No Escape!   Chapter 14

Riven’s POVShe haunts me, even when I close my eyes, her voice is like music and her name is a sweet escape. Lilly. The moment the world collapsed, when the sky tore and the realms bled together, I felt her awaken. Like a pulse something ancient and beautiful flickered to life inside the human realm, it was the tether. They whispered of her even in the depths of my kingdom, the humans who dreamed of her light and the demons who recoiled from her power. Then there was me, foolish and hungry I followed that whisper like a moth drawn to flame. That was the first night that I dreamt of her. The dream never changed, she stands in the ruins of a city, pale fire around her wrists and her eyes glowing with something she doesn't yet understand. I reach for her through the smoke and my fingers brush her skin then for a quick moment she looks at me, then she is gone.Every night since I have searched for her again, I thought I was going crazy at first a side effect of the realms merging. But

  • No Escape!   Chapter 13

Lilly's POV The sun climbed higher over the settlement and for the first time since the world collapsed it almost felt like a normal morning. The air was calm as the streets were alive with movement, people carried baskets of vegetables to their houses and the dining area. After meeting with Kael that morning I hadn't been able to stop thinking about him. His voice and presence lingered in my mind and refused to go away. But I forced them away, there were too many people pretending life hadn't shattered outside these walls. Liam had gone to speak to one of the guards about what working with them was like, leaving Scarlet, Mary and me to explore. John took Lilac to the house saying she needed a nap. We followed a dirt path lined with flowers growing from carefully tended soil. Scarlet bent down to touch a daisy, her fingers trembling slightly. "I forgot what these looked like," she murmured. "Feels like another lifetime," I said. "It was."A few people smiled at us as we passed

  • No Escape!   Chapter 12

Lilly's POVMorning came as the sun was illuminating a soft light through the window. For the first time since the world collapsed I wake up to peace instead of screams and chaos. The curtains in the room were thin so I felt the warmth of the sun on my face enjoying every minute of it. The memories flashed through my mind, the ambush, the settlement, the strange light that comes from me and the gorgeous man wgho I can't keep away from my thoughts, Kael. His name sent shivers down my spine, not in a bad way, and I knew there was a connection between us that I would need to confront at some point. Scarlet stirred from her bed rolling over with a groan. "Morning already?""Yes it seems like it."She blinked at the light and said, "We didn't die in our sleep so I am taking that as a win."I smiled slightly but my nerves were going crazy, there was something about this place that felt off and unnatural but safe. When we emerged into the kitchen Mary and John were already there with Lilac

  • No Escape!   Chapter 11

Lilly's POV The first thing I noticed was the silence, after the screams, the fire and the panic of running for our lives the quiet of the house felt wrong. The others were already settling in after a quick rest, we all woke up around three in the morning and decided to pick rooms. I leaned against the doorway every one of my muscles aching and hurt, my ribs were bruised from one of the demons. Even now I can still hear the demon saying saying, "Found you," right before Liam had silenced it. I shook the thought away and glanced around the house, it was perfect, unreal even. It had clean floors, working lights, blankets that emailed of laundry soap and there was a fruit bowl on the dining room table with actual fresh fruit. I had forgotten what fresh fruit looked like already. "How is this possible?" I muttered under my breath. Scarlet caught my eye from across the room. "Are you thinking the same thing that I am?""That this is too good to be true?""Yeah. Exactly that."We shar

  • No Escape!   Chapter 10

Lilly’s POV We walked for hours, the cracked highway stretched endlessly ahead, each mile marker was covered in dust with splatters of blood. The wind was blowing hard enough to push us back towards the compound we've left behind. Chicago was a shrinking shadow behind us with it's skyscrapers leaning instead of standing tall. The road south twisted between forests that were empty of leaves from the trees that were charred and split open. John led the way with his rifle raised with Scarlet walking beside him scanning every ditch and broke down car. Liam was at the rear, silent and tense, his eyes always drifting towards me as though he expected me to burst into flames and maybe he wasn't wrong. Ever since the attack at the compound when I released the light I can feel something pulsing under my skin like a second heart beating. It didn't hurt exactly just uncomfortable like it was waiting to be set free. The air shifted around us. "Hold up," Liam muttered, his hand going up in a

  • No Escape!   Chapter 9

Lilly’s POVThe morning came slow and heavy, dragging light down the tunnel like it didn’t want to touch the world above. We’d made it through the night—barely. No one really slept. Every sound echoed: dripping water, shuffling feet, Lilac’s quiet whimpers in her sleep. I sat against the concrete wall, staring at the small circle of light from the hatch above us, wondering what was left.Liam was the first to move. His face was drawn, streaked with soot, jaw tight. The calm authority he’d carried before the attack was still there but dulled and weighed down.“We go up in pairs,” he said, voice rough from exhaustion. “Stay quiet. If they’re still out there, we don’t draw attention.”Scarlet nodded, checking her pistol. John followed with a tired grunt, his arm wrapped around Mary’s shoulders protectively.I waited until they climbed first, then looked to Liam. “You think anyone else made it?”His gaze flicked toward the ceiling hatch, then back to me. “No.” A pause. “But we’ll make it
