Chapter 1

A gown heavy with hand-stitched embellishments slammed into my chest.

Rebecca stood before me, her pretty face twisted with disdain. Her voice rang out clearly, but every word cut like a blade. "Gordon, who told you to come here? Do you think money can buy anything? That you can buy me a role, buy my dignity? Stop insulting me with your filthy money!"

Those words… They were exactly the same as in my previous life.

The spot where the gown had struck me still throbbed faintly. Only now was I finally certain that I had been reborn.

In my previous life, I had paved the way for her, from gowns to connections, from supporting roles to the female lead.

But she had convinced herself that I was trying to control her. In the end, she conspired with her lover to have me killed.

I looked at the woman I had once given everything to and suddenly found the whole thing absurd.

I bent down and picked up the gown. My gaze swept across the waiting area before it settled on another young woman in plain clothes who was waiting for her turn.

I held out the gown to her and said, "Here. It's yours now. A chance like this doesn't come around twice. Do well."

For a moment, the entire waiting area fell silent.

Rebecca's haughty expression froze, then gave way to disbelief and fury.

The young woman before me blinked in surprise, then quickly recovered and thanked me over and over. "T-Thank you!"

See? Even a stranger recognized the value of that gown and knew how to show gratitude.

But Rebecca? In my previous life, I had given her everything I had. Had any of it ever earned me even a shred of genuine affection from her?

Rebecca could no longer maintain her composure, and the anger in her voice was unmistakable. "Gordon, have you lost your mind?"

She clearly hadn't expected me to give away a gown that had been custom-made just for her.

I turned back to face her calmly. My eyes no longer held a trace of the submissiveness I had once shown her.

Her friend, who stood beside her, hurried to smooth things over. "Calloway, you showed up out of nowhere with a gift today. Becca wasn't prepared for it. It's only natural that she's upset.

"You're a man. Be the bigger person and apologize to Becca. I'll put in a good word for you, too. This will all blow over."

Rebecca immediately seized the opportunity and lifted her chin. "If you apologize to me properly right now and order me an even better gown... maybe I'll consider forgiving you."

Every eye in the room turned toward me. Everyone expected me to give in and coax her as I always had.

The old me would have apologized on the spot and rushed to have another gown made for her. But not anymore.

"Miss Quinn, didn't you say you wanted to earn roles through your own talent?" I smiled faintly, my voice edged with mockery. "What? Do you need my filthy money to pave the way for you after all?"

At my words, Rebecca's face turned ashen before it flushed with fury. "Why, you!"

She pointed a finger at me, her chest heaved with anger, and she couldn't manage another word.

A cool, detached voice cut in. "Of course Becca doesn't need your money to pave her way, Calloway. She could wear clothes from a street stall and still act circles around every talentless actress who bought her way to the top!

"It's you, Gordon Calloway, who's been hounding Becca for years. Do you really think having a bit of money means the whole world has to coddle you?"

I looked up and saw Travis Cruz approach. He came to a stop beside Rebecca.

Travis was her lover and a senior from her department.

In my previous life, the two of them had used their rehearsals together as an excuse to carry on an affair behind my back.

Rebecca had still been my girlfriend at the time, yet she accompanied him everywhere, right in front of everyone, without the slightest attempt at discretion.

I had once asked her to keep her distance from Travis.

I watched Charlotte navigate the world of fame and fortune with remarkable skill while remaining true to herself, and it filled me with a quiet sense of satisfaction. This was exactly what a talent worth investing in should look like.…Life settled back into a steady rhythm of work and planning, with little to disturb the peace. Then, one day, a news story quietly climbed the trending list. My assistant mentioned it in passing during a routine briefing.Rebecca had been sentenced to life in prison for intentional homicide.According to the report, as she struggled to make ends meet with Travis, her memories of her previous life had grown increasingly vivid, like a curse she could never escape. She blamed Travis for every bit of her present suffering and even the crime she had committed in her previous life. Day after day, she cursed him without restraint. She believed he was responsible for costing her my protection, causing her fall from grace, and ultimately driving her to c

An important dinner was coming up, and I planned to take Charlotte along to help her make some connections.Partway through the drive, a figure suddenly darted out from the roadside and stopped directly in front of the car.The driver slammed on the brakes, and the sudden stop threw me forward."What's going on?" I asked with a frown. The driver had barely stepped out when a deranged woman rushed past him and threw herself against my window. She pounded on the glass desperately.Only then did I recognize her. It was Rebecca. In barely a year, she had wasted away to the point of being almost unrecognizable. Her clothes were ragged, and her eyes were unfocused. Nothing remained of the woman she used to be."Gordon! Gordon, I know I was wrong!" she sobbed as she clawed at the window. "I shouldn't have said those things or humiliated you. I was so stupid back then. I only realize now how good you were to me! Please forgive me. Just give me one more chance!"I felt nothing but disgu

Unsurprisingly, the support Rebecca had been counting on never came.In front of everyone, Hester's face darkened. He suddenly raised his hand and slapped Rebecca hard across the face. The sharp crack echoed through the deathly silent conference room. The blow sent her staggering, and she collapsed to the floor. She clutched her cheek and stared up at Hester in stunned disbelief.Hester did not spare her so much as a glance. "You crazy woman! What the hell are you babbling about?"Instead, he turned to me with a fawning smile and bowed slightly at the waist. "Mr. Calloway, please don't misunderstand! This woman has lost her mind! She's been spouting nonsense!"I barely know her! She's slandering me and using my name to con people! Please don't let trash like her offend your eyes or ruin your mood. She's entirely to blame for this!"The brutal slap and his desperate attempt to distance himself struck Rebecca like a bucket of ice water. She sat slumped on the floor and stared at t

What I had said was vicious, but every word was true. I had laid bare the very flaws that had always plagued her acting.Yet Rebecca still seemed convinced that I was attacking her out of spite. "You're talking nonsense! Who are you to decide my work isn't good enough?"Her face alternated between pale and flushed, and her voice grew even sharper. "You don't even understand acting! You have no right to judge me!"The director beside me opened his mouth, clearly about to explain my position and authority, but I raised a hand to stop him.I looked at Rebecca, who was practically unhinged by this point, and asked flatly, "Why exactly do I have no right to decide whether you get this role?"Rebecca seemed to seize on an opportunity, and her voice rose with smug triumph. "Because Mr. Wilkins already gave me his word! Hester Wilkins himself! He told me this role was mine and mine alone! So what you say doesn't matter!"Hester Wilkins? That assistant director with the rotten reputation?

Casting continued in an orderly fashion until a familiar figure walked in with her head down.It was Rebecca.I barely recognized her at first. The Rebecca before me wore old, ill-fitting clothes that were clearly out of style. Her face bore unmistakable signs of exhaustion. Every trace of the polish and elegance she had once so carefully cultivated was gone. Her eyes held a timid, uncertain look, and when she noticed everyone watching her, she flinched involuntarily. Then her gaze swept past the panel of directors and landed on me. She went rigid.A moment later, she seemed to regain her composure. She immediately straightened her back and lifted her chin slightly. The haughtiness she forced onto her face, fragile as it was, stood in absurd contrast to her shabby clothes. She looked at me with a flicker of expectation and smugness that she could not quite conceal, as if to say, "Look at that. I knew you couldn't let me go. You even chased me all the way here. What a pathetic d

The other end of the line was filled with noise. Shouts and harsh curses mingled with Rebecca's tearful, breathless voice. It sounded as though she had snatched someone else's phone, and she begged for help in a frantic rush of broken words. In my previous life, hearing her sound so helpless would have sent me into a panic. I would have rushed to save her without a second thought. But now, a strange calm settled over me. I even found the situation almost ironic.Wasn't this exactly what she had brought upon herself?I had protected her too well. I had allowed her to live inside a greenhouse I had built with my own hands, until she had grown so naive that she was practically foolish.Rebecca could no longer distinguish between those who genuinely wanted to protect her and those who harbored ulterior motives. Now that the greenhouse had collapsed, she was finally getting her first taste of the real world's teeth. When I remained silent for too long, Rebecca's panic quickly gave way
