Chapter 2

Author: Thai Ginger
Rebecca had called my thoughts filthy and claimed that everything she did was for her art, to give audiences something better to watch on screen.

In the end, she and Travis had conspired to kill me so they could be together for good.

She had secretly taken out a massive life insurance policy on me.

On my birthday, she had used the celebration as a pretext to lure me to the 23rd floor. She planned to push me off and make my death look like a drunken accident, all to collect the insurance payout.

Right before I died, she looked at me with open contempt and said, "You've treated me like nothing but your cash cow all these years! You've tried to control every aspect of my life!

"You forced me to take role after role that I hated, all to line your own pockets! You never once cared about what I wanted! You even went around telling everyone I was your fiancée just to keep me under your control! It's disgusting!

"If it weren't for you, Travis and I would have gotten together a long time ago! Once you're dead, we won't have to hide anymore!"

As soon as she finished speaking, the two of them pushed me off the 23rd floor together. The sickening crack of impact still seemed to echo in my ears.

Back then, Rebecca had been the one who wanted to become a household name. I had spared no expense to secure roles for her with top directors and pave the way for her success.

Yet she had seen my efforts as nothing more than an attempt to control her.

I had worried that people in the industry might approach her with bad intentions, so I told everyone she was my fiancée to protect her.

But in her eyes, I was nothing more than an obstacle between her and Travis.

How laughable. They had used my money and resources to establish themselves in the industry, only to turn around and bite the hand that fed them.

Fine. Let's see just how far their so-called talent could take them without my backing.

Rebecca seemed to have regained her confidence after hearing Travis' words. She lifted her chin, her voice thick with arrogance. "Did you hear that? Without you, I'll shine even brighter."

Her friends immediately chimed in to support her.

"Exactly! Becca has the looks and the talent! Who needs your filthy money?"

"Don't think having a little money makes you someone important! Becca doesn't even want it!"

One of the taller women, eager to show off, reached out to shove me. "Get lost already! Stop standing around here like an eyesore!"

I sidestepped her and swept my foot out in the same motion. She stumbled and fell hard to the ground.

Rebecca immediately rounded on me, her voice shrill with outrage. "Gordon! What do you think you're doing? Are you even a man? How could you lay hands on a woman?"

I watched her rush to her friend's defense and let out a cold laugh. I had treated them like decent people for far too long. That was exactly why every last one of them had grown increasingly brazen.

"Fine. Since you're all so proud, and since my filthy money isn't good enough for you, pay back every cent I've spent on you over the years. I won't accept a penny less."

She wanted to act like some untouchable saint while still clinging to every benefit my money had brought her. Did she really think the world worked that way?

The moment I said that, every eye turned toward Rebecca.

"Didn't she always say she never relied on anyone? Turns out she's spent that much of his money..."

"She didn't complain while she was spending it. Now that he wants it back, suddenly she doesn't want to pay?"

"She wants to have it both ways. That's just pathetic."

Her face went pale, then flushed red.

With everyone watching her, she forced herself to raise her voice. "Fine, I'll pay it back! As if I even want your money! Just stay away from me after this!"

I watched her put on that act and merely let out a cold laugh.

Stay away from her?

In my previous life, she had kept stringing me along. Whenever I started to grow distant, she would reach out to draw me back, only to pull away the moment I got close.

If she hadn't kept playing those games, would I have ever humiliated myself like that?

Not in this life. I would never make the same mistake again.

One was deceitful, and the other was vicious. They deserved each other, as long as they stopped ruining other people's lives.

As for the money? I would settle accounts with her, down to the very last cent.

"Gladly." I turned and walked away without hesitation.

After I had taken a few steps, I heard Rebecca's voice behind me. She sounded faintly uneasy.

I watched Charlotte navigate the world of fame and fortune with remarkable skill while remaining true to herself, and it filled me with a quiet sense of satisfaction. This was exactly what a talent worth investing in should look like.…Life settled back into a steady rhythm of work and planning, with little to disturb the peace. Then, one day, a news story quietly climbed the trending list. My assistant mentioned it in passing during a routine briefing.Rebecca had been sentenced to life in prison for intentional homicide.According to the report, as she struggled to make ends meet with Travis, her memories of her previous life had grown increasingly vivid, like a curse she could never escape. She blamed Travis for every bit of her present suffering and even the crime she had committed in her previous life. Day after day, she cursed him without restraint. She believed he was responsible for costing her my protection, causing her fall from grace, and ultimately driving her to c

An important dinner was coming up, and I planned to take Charlotte along to help her make some connections.Partway through the drive, a figure suddenly darted out from the roadside and stopped directly in front of the car.The driver slammed on the brakes, and the sudden stop threw me forward."What's going on?" I asked with a frown. The driver had barely stepped out when a deranged woman rushed past him and threw herself against my window. She pounded on the glass desperately.Only then did I recognize her. It was Rebecca. In barely a year, she had wasted away to the point of being almost unrecognizable. Her clothes were ragged, and her eyes were unfocused. Nothing remained of the woman she used to be."Gordon! Gordon, I know I was wrong!" she sobbed as she clawed at the window. "I shouldn't have said those things or humiliated you. I was so stupid back then. I only realize now how good you were to me! Please forgive me. Just give me one more chance!"I felt nothing but disgu

Unsurprisingly, the support Rebecca had been counting on never came.In front of everyone, Hester's face darkened. He suddenly raised his hand and slapped Rebecca hard across the face. The sharp crack echoed through the deathly silent conference room. The blow sent her staggering, and she collapsed to the floor. She clutched her cheek and stared up at Hester in stunned disbelief.Hester did not spare her so much as a glance. "You crazy woman! What the hell are you babbling about?"Instead, he turned to me with a fawning smile and bowed slightly at the waist. "Mr. Calloway, please don't misunderstand! This woman has lost her mind! She's been spouting nonsense!"I barely know her! She's slandering me and using my name to con people! Please don't let trash like her offend your eyes or ruin your mood. She's entirely to blame for this!"The brutal slap and his desperate attempt to distance himself struck Rebecca like a bucket of ice water. She sat slumped on the floor and stared at t

What I had said was vicious, but every word was true. I had laid bare the very flaws that had always plagued her acting.Yet Rebecca still seemed convinced that I was attacking her out of spite. "You're talking nonsense! Who are you to decide my work isn't good enough?"Her face alternated between pale and flushed, and her voice grew even sharper. "You don't even understand acting! You have no right to judge me!"The director beside me opened his mouth, clearly about to explain my position and authority, but I raised a hand to stop him.I looked at Rebecca, who was practically unhinged by this point, and asked flatly, "Why exactly do I have no right to decide whether you get this role?"Rebecca seemed to seize on an opportunity, and her voice rose with smug triumph. "Because Mr. Wilkins already gave me his word! Hester Wilkins himself! He told me this role was mine and mine alone! So what you say doesn't matter!"Hester Wilkins? That assistant director with the rotten reputation?

Casting continued in an orderly fashion until a familiar figure walked in with her head down.It was Rebecca.I barely recognized her at first. The Rebecca before me wore old, ill-fitting clothes that were clearly out of style. Her face bore unmistakable signs of exhaustion. Every trace of the polish and elegance she had once so carefully cultivated was gone. Her eyes held a timid, uncertain look, and when she noticed everyone watching her, she flinched involuntarily. Then her gaze swept past the panel of directors and landed on me. She went rigid.A moment later, she seemed to regain her composure. She immediately straightened her back and lifted her chin slightly. The haughtiness she forced onto her face, fragile as it was, stood in absurd contrast to her shabby clothes. She looked at me with a flicker of expectation and smugness that she could not quite conceal, as if to say, "Look at that. I knew you couldn't let me go. You even chased me all the way here. What a pathetic d

The other end of the line was filled with noise. Shouts and harsh curses mingled with Rebecca's tearful, breathless voice. It sounded as though she had snatched someone else's phone, and she begged for help in a frantic rush of broken words. In my previous life, hearing her sound so helpless would have sent me into a panic. I would have rushed to save her without a second thought. But now, a strange calm settled over me. I even found the situation almost ironic.Wasn't this exactly what she had brought upon herself?I had protected her too well. I had allowed her to live inside a greenhouse I had built with my own hands, until she had grown so naive that she was practically foolish.Rebecca could no longer distinguish between those who genuinely wanted to protect her and those who harbored ulterior motives. Now that the greenhouse had collapsed, she was finally getting her first taste of the real world's teeth. When I remained silent for too long, Rebecca's panic quickly gave way
