Chapter 5

Penulis: Arthur Cross
Paul waddled onto the stage, his beer belly leading the way. His greasy eyes crawled over me as he reached out to wrap an arm around my waist.

The atmosphere hit its peak. Everyone was praising the Howes for their virtue and celebrating the happy occasion.

I stepped aside, dodging Paul's hand, and smoothly took the microphone.

"It is a happy occasion." I smiled, my voice cool and steady as it carried through the speakers. "But Father, you forgot something."

Nelson frowned, his eyes flashing a warning.

I pressed the small remote in my hand, and the giant screen behind us abruptly changed.

The sentimental music cut off mid note, replaced by rough audio and grainy video.

Nelson's cold voice rang out, clear as day, recorded on the day of the kidnapping. "I'll keep the money for charity and image laundering. What's one dead daughter? Saves me from having to split the inheritance if she came back, and it even helps build my public persona."

Another clip followed, Lilith's voice at the kidnapping scene. "Just kill her! My dad will pay you double to keep quiet. Just make sure she's dead."

Then came page after page of private account transfers, followed by the fake contracts meant to frame me and send me to prison, each one signed by Nelson.

The room exploded into chaos.

Cameras flashed wildly. Shutters snapped like rapid gunfire.

Nelson's face drained of color, as if he were struck by lightning.

He snapped out of it and roared, charging toward me to grab the mic. "Turn it off! Shut it down! It's fake. This lunatic fabricated everything!"

Before he could reach me, financial crimes officers who had been waiting burst in from the side entrance and slammed him to the floor.

"Nelson Howe, you're under arrest for money laundering, solicitation of murder, and corporate fraud."

I stood under the spotlight and looked down at the Howes in total collapse.

My mother had sunk to the floor. Lilith screamed as creditors swarmed around her.

I slowly removed the black lace glove I had worn all night.

I had only four fingers on my left hand. My pinky was gone, leaving a jagged, horrifying wound. It was pain carried over from both lives, and in this moment, the sharpest evidence of all.

A collective gasp rippled through the crowd.

I pulled out the notebook that listed my so-called debt of 760 thousand dollars and flung it straight at my sobbing mother's face.

Paper scattered through the air like falling snow.

I spoke into the microphone slowly and clearly, "Consider the 760 thousand my payment for giving me life. That ten million in dirty money buys you your meals in prison. Mr. Howe, since you care so much about proving your impartiality, from today on, we'll be strangers."

I dropped the microphone, turned, and jumped off the stage, walking straight toward the exit without looking back.

Behind me was the thunder of an empire collapsing. Ahead was a night that was dark, but free.

A black car waited in the pouring rain. The window rolled down, revealing a pair of familiar eyes.

"Get in."

He was the only one who had bothered to collect my body in my last life.

  • No Longer Their Daughter   Chapter 11

[The baby kicked today. I hope she grows up healthy and happy. If it's a girl, I'll call her Alexis. I hope she's smart and safe.]The tears finally broke free.So I had been loved.Even if the person who loved me was long gone, that love traveled more than 20 years ahead and warmed a heart that had gone cold long ago.I wasn't some unwanted weed.I was a treasure who came into this world carrying love. When I stepped out of the old house, the sky had cleared.Mason was leaning against the car, an unlit cigarette between his fingers. When he saw my swollen eyes, he didn't ask what happened. He just crushed the cigarette and opened his arms."Ready to go home?"I threw myself into his embrace and nodded hard."Let's go home."-Three years later…I opened a nonprofit legal aid center downtown called Lexis, focused on helping women facing domestic violence and injustice.I still wore a glove on my left hand, but I no longer hid it.When someone came to me for help, I woul

My mother didn't dare ring the doorbell. She crouched at the entrance instead, shaking from the cold. When Mason's car pulled in, the headlights swept over her.She looked up. The face that had once been carefully maintained was now covered in frostbite and grime. When she saw me step out of the passenger seat, her eyes lit up. She struggled forward on her knees."Alexis… Alexis… I was wrong. I'm really sorry…" She clutched at my pant leg, tears and snot running down her face. "Can you give me something to eat? I'm not picky. Leftovers are fine. I'm so cold…"I looked down at her. This was the mother who, in my last life, made me use the side entrance because she was afraid I would dirty the carpet after being kidnapped. This was the mother who priced my entire life at 760 thousand dollars. In that moment, the last trace of anger left in my chest vanished. All that remained was pity."Mason," I said quietly."Yeah?" Mason stood beside me, holding an umbrella."Give her 50 bu

"Y-You ungrateful snake!"Nelson shook so hard that his whole body rattled. He couldn't catch his breath, clutching his chest as he hacked violently, his face turning a deep, ugly purple. That money was supposed to be his retirement fund. His last lifeline. Now, it had become the final nail sealing his coffin shut."There's more good news," I said calmly, watching him fall apart. "The Lilith you loved so much is actually the maid's daughter. You raised someone else's child for 20 years. And for her sake, you personally destroyed your real daughter and your own company."Nelson froze. His mouth hung open, and a wheezing sound rattled in his throat. The light in his eyes went out completely, leaving nothing but despair and regret. Not regret toward me. Regret because he realized he had been a complete fool."So this is what you get for letting me down completely."I set the receiver down and stood."Mr. Howe, I hope you reflect on your mistakes and work on yourself in there.

"No… That's impossible!" My mother's face went deathly pale as she whipped around to stare at Lilith.Lilith's eyes darted away. She stumbled back in panic. "Mom, don't listen to her! She's lying because she's jealous! I'm your daughter!""You knew?" My mother rushed over and grabbed Lilith by the shoulders. "Didn't you always say you remembered things from when you were little?""I… I…" Lilith stammered, unable to finish a sentence."Of course, she knew," I cut in calmly. "The maid told her before she died. That's why she's been pretending to be sick and fighting for attention all these years. She was terrified her background would come out. Mom, you drove your real daughter to death for a maid's kid, and you were ready to hand her the entire family fortune. That's quite the bargain."Smack! My mother finally snapped and slapped Lilith hard across the face."You liar! You fake! I gave you everything! I even sacrificed Alexis's finger for you! Give me my family back. Give me my

Mason glanced at me and reached over, turning the heat up a couple of degrees."The blade's sharpened," he said quietly. "However you want to strike, I'm with you."A week later, Howe Corporation officially declared bankruptcy.Once the evidence came out, the once untouchable business empire collapsed like wet paper.Banks called in their loans. Suppliers lined up to collect debts. Courts moved in and sealed everything. The Howe estate was taped off, eviction notice was slapped on the gate.On a rainy night, my mother stood by the roadside with two suitcases, Lilith at her side. The drivers and house staff who used to swarm around them were long gone. Even the ever-flattering butler had taken her expensive watch as unpaid wages before disappearing."Mom, what do we do now? I don't want to stay at some motel! Those sheets are disgusting," Lilith complained, hiding behind sunglasses and a mask, still throwing a tantrum like a spoiled princess. My mother stared at the frozen bala

The car door shut, sealing off the noise of the crowd and the pounding rain outside. The interior smelled faintly of cedar, mixed with the sharp scent of blood clinging to me.The man in the driver's seat handed me a warm towel. The motion was practiced, as if he had done this countless times before."Mason?" I turned to look at him, my voice rough.Mason Tucker was Evermont's most elusive investor. He was ruthless, untouchable, and the Howes' sworn enemy. In my last life, I had died on the street. My body rotted before anyone claimed it. He had arranged my burial and left a white chrysanthemum at my grave."Hey." Mason didn't look at me. His eyes stayed fixed on the rain ahead, knuckles pale against the steering wheel. "I was still too late."His gaze flicked to my left hand, which was missing a finger. A flash of murderous intent crossed his eyes."Go to the care facility," I said. There was no time to catch up. "Now that Nelson's been arrested, his people will go after my gr
