Chapter 4

Author: Rivermore
I didn't answer.

I only looked at him.

Lucas lowered his head.

"My mom hasn't been doing well.

"She recently had surgery, and recovery hasn't gone smoothly.

"Her only wish is to see me settled."

He sighed.

"You know she never approved of you because of your sense of direction.

"Now the money for the house is gone too.

"There's no chance she'll agree.

"She likes Brielle.

"And Brielle is willing to go through with the wedding."

"Lucas."

I stood.

My voice was flat.

"Who you marry has nothing to do with me.

"Get out.

"Neither my mother nor I want you here."

Lucas didn't move.

After a long silence, he spoke again.

"Everyone knows we were supposed to marry.

"If I suddenly marry your best friend, people are going to talk about Brielle.

"She's sensitive.

"She can't take that kind of gossip."

He took my hand.

"If you come to the wedding and publicly give us your blessing, nobody will say anything.

"Don't worry.

"The wedding is just for show.

"It's just to calm my mother down.

"Once she's recovered, I'll give you a much bigger wedding."

My hand moved before I thought about it.

The slap turned his face sideways.

"Get out.

"Get out! Now!"

Brielle rushed in.

Eyes red, she shoved me.

"Your mother is gone, so Lucas has to lose his mother too?

"How can you be this selfish?"

Lucas took Brielle's hand.

Whatever guilt had been on his face vanished.

"Brielle is better than you in every way.

"No wonder my mother loves her and never liked you.

"If you hadn't thrown a tantrum and broken up with me, none of this would've happened.

"If you hadn't gone to the police over a little money, your mother wouldn't have died either.

"At the end of the day, Nora, this is your fault."

My hands dropped to my sides.

They walked away together.

After Mom was cremated, I spent days sitting at home holding her photograph.

A week later, a mass invitation appeared on my phone.

[You are warmly invited to celebrate the wedding of Lucas Wentworth and Brielle Fontaine...]

Their engagement photo filled the screen.

I gripped the phone until my hand hurt.

Why did I have to lose everything while they walked straight into happiness?

Lucas.

Brielle.

Fine.

I'd bring a wedding gift.

The ceremony was three days away.

That was enough time.

On the wedding day, Lucas's mother, Diane Wentworth, stood at the hotel entrance greeting guests.

For a woman supposedly recovering from surgery, she looked remarkably healthy.

Her cheeks were rosy.

Her voice carried across the entire lobby.

I walked around her and entered the ballroom.

A guest beside me leaned closer.

"Are you here for the groom or the bride?

"This is some wedding."

I looked around.

A long aisle, fresh flowers everywhere, packed tables, and a line of luxury cars outside.

The Wentworth family had spared no expense.

Whether the wedding would end with the same dignity was another question.

I smiled.

"I'm one of the most important people in their story.

"And I brought them a very special gift."

The emcee began: the champagne tower, the rings, the vows.

When the ceremony reached its final stage, I stood.

Lucas saw me and froze.

Brielle's face changed immediately.

I walked onto the stage while whispers spread through the ballroom.

Lucas grabbed my arm and pulled me aside.

"Nora, what are you doing?"

I smiled.

"You asked me to come bless you.

"So I came."

Brielle stepped in quickly.

"Everyone, don't misunderstand.

"Nora is my best friend."

Our mutual friends sat together near the front.

Their eyes moved from her to Lucas to me.

I took the microphone from the emcee and stepped into the center of the stage.

"I came today with a wedding gift for the happy couple."

I turned toward the large screen behind us.

"Please watch."

Lucas dropped to his knees in front of me.He held out the cake like an offering."Nora, look."It's mango."The birthday cake you wanted last time before Brielle ruined everything."Two years ago, Lucas had promised me a mango cake for my birthday. Then Brielle casually said strawberry tasted better. He changed the order. On my own birthday, I stood beside them while they laughed and blew out my candles together.I looked at the cake now.I felt nothing.Lucas pulled a dress from one of the bags."And this."You saw it first."Brielle said it wouldn't suit you, so I gave it to her instead."That was my fault."Nora, please forgive me."Then he reached for the old pillow.I stopped him."Don't."That pillow doesn't matter anymore.""It does."His eyes filled with tears."Those are our memories."Nora, I'm begging you."Give me one more chance."I regret it every day."I was wrong."I know I was wrong.""Lucas."I waited until he stopped."You didn't sudde

A few days later, I made arrangements to leave my apartment. Then I took Mom's photograph and returned to my hometown. She used to tell me that once I married, she'd move back there, get a dog, grow vegetables, and live out her days in peace. It took me more than a month to repair the little house with a yard.It wasn't large. I turned the soil, put up a simple fence, and cleaned out the sunniest bedroom. Most days, I either researched how to improve the garden soil or ordered ridiculous numbers of vegetable seeds online.A few weeks later, I decided to visit a pet store and choose a puppy.Halfway there, I saw a small yellow dog curled against a wall.He was maybe three months old, shivering and watching everyone who passed with frightened eyes.I took him to a vet for his shots and a full checkup. He was healthy and quiet. He didn't make a sound through the whole visit.I took him home. For days, he stayed in one corner except when he ate.So I bought far too many toys,

Brielle ran toward the screen."Turn it off!"Turn it off!"Nobody look at it!"Get out!"She tried to block the display with her body.It didn't matter.I'd found this material by accident while collecting evidence.Brielle had been seeing someone for years. Her boyfriend, Evan Brooks, was terminally ill.His treatment required money she didn't have.At first, Brielle and I had only been coworkers. We weren't close. Then, during a company outing, a man harassed me on the way to the restroom.Brielle stepped in.She got me out of it.Because I'd always struggled with directions, I never made friends easily. After that day, Brielle helped me constantly at work. When coworkers went out, she stayed close so I wouldn't get separated.I trusted her.Eventually, I told her everything.I never realized how calculated it was.At some point, she began joining every date Lucas and I planned. In the beginning, Lucas complained that she was ruining our time alone.Later, my

The ballroom erupted.Mrs. Wentworth had always cared more about appearances than almost anything else. When I first visited, she'd fed me leftovers. Then she'd posted a whole gallery of beautiful food on social media, bragging that she'd prepared it specially for her future daughter-in-law.Now that I'd exposed her in front of everyone, her face turned an ugly shade of purple. As the whispers grew louder, she started breathing rapidly."My heart."Lucas, call an ambulance."Lucas reached for his phone. Then the second recording began to play. His hand stopped."Brielle, your idea really was perfect."Mrs. Wentworth's recorded voice filled the room."Pretend I'm sick, and Lucas will finally marry you."Onscreen, Brielle sat beside her hospital bed peeling an apple."Mrs. Wentworth, you must be exhausted."All those tests."Staying in the hospital just to keep the act going."Mrs. Wentworth laughed."Exhausted? Please."I'll do anything if it means you and Lucas end

The screen went black.Phones appeared throughout the audience.I had prepared three pieces of evidence. The first was security footage from the luxury boutique.Lucas and Brielle entered together. The camera clearly showed Lucas unlocking my phone and transferring money out of my account.Lucas's face went pale.He grabbed my wrist."Nora, are you seriously still making a scene over that money?"I pulled free and raised the microphone."Everyone here should know something."While Lucas Wentworth was still dating me, he transferred money out of my account without permission and used it to buy a luxury bag for my best friend, Brielle Fontaine."I know his family is here."His friends."His coworkers."So let me ask all of you."Would you trust someone who treats another person's bank account like this?""Don't listen to her."Lucas ripped the microphone from my hand and threw it to the floor."We were already broken up.""Really?"I nodded toward the screen.A phot
