Summer was my absolute favorite time of the year. Just like most kids, I hated being in school, and would have much rather been outside riding my bike or swimming. On this particular day, we were outside by the pool. The laughter of children my age filled the deck. Armed with the most high tech squirt guns money could buy, we were all chasing eachother around, battling it out to an aqua-infused “death.”

Kylee, my best friend, had taken center stage and had teamed up with me to strategically plaster everyone while also watching one another’s backs. Today was Kylee’s birthday, and my parents, who had been fostering her for several months now, had decided to throw her a party at my pleading. It was the first real party that Kylee had ever had and she was beaming with joy.

The two of us had become inseparable that year. We had become fast friends during a group project in one of our classes. Now, we were absolute besties. When Kylee told me that she had been dragged into another foster home that was unloving to her, I begged my parents to take her in. “She doesn’t even have a home to call her own, mom!” I had begged.

Mom relented, and after going through all the relevant background checks and working with social services, they had finally managed to bring Kylee were home. We were both over the moon! Kylee, of course, had her own room, but we never even slept separately. When she told me one night that her birthday was coming up, I knew exactly what needed to be done.

So there we were. Running around the pool while my mom shouted “DON’T COME ANYWHERE NEAR THAT CAKE!” Aaah, yes. The cake. It was the biggest birthday cake I had ever seen. Three tiers, mermaid themed, and yet somehow it was pinker than pink could be. Mom had gone to the best bakery in town for this cake, and the shenanegans taking place around her had her anxiety so close to the edge that I’m sure she was going to implode at any moment. If only there was a place inside the house she could stash it until the shenanigans were over…

“To your left, Sarah!” Kylee exclaimed. I expertly aimed my soaker to my left, targeting James Loughlan as he prepared to fire. I pulled the trigger, sending a huge blast of water his way.

“Aaah!” He squealed. I wasn’t done yet, though. Pumping my gun, I continued to hold the trigger, wasting the entire contents of my tank on James as he ran away from me. I went back to the bucket for a reload, and Kylee held my six.

“Alright, lets go!” I said, my toy now filled. I was screwing the tank back on as James entered range. “To your right!” I exclaimed at Kylee. She doused James in yet another tank into James. When he was retreating once more, we switched places as she refilled her tank.

It was then that I realized we had made a terrible mistake. “Uh, oh. Kylee! Hurry!” I exclaimed. Fed up with being the fish of the game, we were being surrounded. Every last one of them had shit eating grins plastered to their revengeful faces as they slowly approached us.

“Sarah. I think its time to surrender!” Kylee whispered.

“Neverrrr!” I exclaimed, holding my toy up triumphantly. “We either live or die trying!”

Noting my bravery, Kylee stood next to me, leveling out her gun to everyone that we faced. Just as we were getting ready to enter the final battle, my mom’s voice boomed across the pool deck.

“Alright, kids! It's time for presents and cake!”

The crowd filled with moans and grumbles as everyone put their toys down and headed back to the patio. On the table was a mound of presents for Kylee. More than even I had ever seen! She deserved them, though, for being such an awesome friend. I had gone shopping with mom and we had picked so many things out! New clothes, toys, electronics, a phone, tablet, and so much more. I watched as she opened everything that we had gotten her, along with what the other kids had brought her, too. If cloud nine was a real place that existed, this would be it for Kylee.

Just when she finished unwrapping everything, my mom and dad both presented themselves to Kylee. "We have one more present for you, sweetheart.” My mom said to her. She and my dad held a manilla envelope together, tied up with ribbon and a pretty pink bow.

Curious, Kylee opened it. Her small hand reached in and pulled out a sheet of paper. In big, bold letters, the words “ADOPTION NOTICE” were spread across it. Eyes going wide, she looked at my mom, and then my dad. “Really?” She gasped.

“Welcome to the family, Short Stuff.” My dad said to her. Kylee ran into their arms, and they held her tightly while she cried.

“Wait. Does that mean Kylee is my sister now?” I said, my mouth ajar.

“It sure does!” My mom confirmed.

“KYLEE IS MY SISTER NOW!” I hollered as I ran in to join the family hug.

Everyone in the crowd cheered. Kylee cried. I cried. My mom cried. We were all so happy! When the hug ended, my dad lit the candles. “Come stand next to me!” Kylee beckoned, gripping my hand and pulling me front and center with her. We sat down next to eachother as everyone began to sing happy birthday to her.

Everything was so surreal. The most perfect day that even I had ever had. Kylee was getting a family, and I was getting a sister. It was more than we could ever dream of! Just as they got to “Happy Birthday, Dear Kyleeeee!” her hand, hidden behind the cake, reached out and grabbed the bottom of the tray. It all happened as if it were in slow motion.

The cake began to fall. “Hap-pyyy birth-daaaaaay” The tiere separated one by one.

Frosting began to splatter as fondant and molding chocolate began to crack and detatch. Kylee was suddenly falling to the ground, in the direct path of the cake. “Toooooo”

“Kylee!” I shouted, pushing her out of the way. As I did so, I entered its path. My body became plastered in its sugary stickiness.

“Youu-“ The singing stopped before the last note finished and everyone gasped.

Kylee began to cry, her palms and knees scraped up as my parents rushed over. “Sarah? Why?” She sobbed.

“Sarah!” My dad began to yell at me as my mom began to console Kylee.

Confused, I had no idea what he even meant. “I didn’t!” I cried.

Then, came the words that sealed everything that my future was going to become. “Sarah didn’t mean to knock the cake over, Daddy. I know she didn’t! It was an accident!

"Maybe she is just upset because she doesn’t get to be the only child anymore.”

  • No Longer Wanted, I Left Them Hanging   Moving On

That day, I walked out of the venue unnoticed while everyone had sat there shocked and covered in cake. I spent my summer with the Harlands, who helped me to open up my own bank account to put away all the money I had earned. There were quite a few more zeroes than I had thought there would be, and I had the feeling that they had added some funds to it, but I took the money with grace. The Harland family was the closest thing to a family that I’d had, and they even flew with me to find my own place and get settled in. Their final gift to me was the car that I had been denied along with driving lessons. They were going well, although I terrified the heck out of my teacher. When the semester started, I poured myself into my studies, focusing on all of the classes that I knew were going to be hard. Although I didn’t need to get a job, I picked one up anyways. It was at a little café around the corner of the place I had gotten near the school. A lot of people I went to class with st

  • No Longer Wanted, I Left Them Hanging   Have Your Cake And Eat It Too

Our parents had set up a grand party at an event center that they owned. It had been decorated in various shades of pinks that had been chosen by Kylee. I was only there because I needed to be by default. There was no doubt that this had been turned into Kylee’s day, not mine. There were pink flowers everywhere. Round tables were adorned with sparkly white tablecloths that had pastel pink table settings with vivid floral centerpieces. The entire class had been invited, and the majority of them were all showing up not just for Kylee, but for the glitz and glam of the whole thing. Mom and dad had made sure that a sound system was set up with all of Kylee’s favorite music. There were video monitors set up to show pictures and videos of Kylee as she grew up. The crew had gotten everything set up. There was only one thing missing. I reached into my dress and pulled out a thumb drive from between my breasts. Opening the files for the slideshow, I inserted a file and found myself a cor

  • No Longer Wanted, I Left Them Hanging   Valedictorian

My graduating class sat next to the stage, pumped and ready for the ceremony to start. Everyone sat there conversing with one another. The main topic of the chatter was who might the mystery valedictorian be. I smiled to myself, knowing that they were all about to be surprised. The opening ceremony started, and Mr. Cunningham took his place at the stage. He gave his commencement speech, and then moved on to introducing me. “This years valedictorian has shown what hard work and dedication is all about. Despite facing an unusual amount of stress from both her family and her peers, this student has shown what it takes to persevere and come out on top. She has already been accepted into a pristine university with a full ride scholarship, and I couldn’t be more proud of this student. I now introduce your Senior Class valedictorian. Ms. Sarah Lewiston. The crowd gasped as I stood up. The echoes of my heels clacking on the ground were the only thing that anyone could hear as I took my p

It couldn’t come fast enough. Not only was today my graduation day, but it was also my birthday. Ever since Kylee had moved in, she had made sure that I got into enough trouble to ruin my day. My parents had all but forgotten that it was also my birthday. “A rotten child doesn’t deserve to be put on a pedestal and celebrated.” My mother had said every year. I didn’t even get so much as a birthday cake anymore. Not that I had anybody to share one with anyways. The seniors had received the day off to prepare for the ceremony. I was at my desk at Harland International. My parents and I had gotten into a shouting match when I got home about me working there, and for once, my dad had managed to argue himself into a corner. In the end, I told him that I was about to be an adult, and I wasn’t going to quit, regardless of what he “ordered” me to do. It was nearing the end of the day when Mrs. Harland came in with a garment bag and handed it to me. “I may not have been able to get you

“I need you to try a few things on for me.” Mrs. Harland said. “Now, I know that your parents aren’t going to be getting you anything proper to wear for your graduation day. So I’m going to do it for you. You’re also going to need a few nice things to take with you to Harvard if you’re going to look the part. So I’ve got the black card, and Mr. Harland told me to spare nothing for you. Your job today is to go crazy and have fun.” I didn’t even know what to say. A doorman let us into the store, and she immediately led us me to the dress section. There were a lot of pretty dresses there. Too pretty for me, but Mrs. Harland was beaming so brightly that I couldn’t just say no to her. My eyes keyed in on a few that I liked. A silvery medusa drape dress, a lace trimmed satin mini dress, printed twill mini shirt dresses in light pink and blue. I loved the lace trimmed dress, but it was too short for my comfort. The mini shirt dresses were too casual. The medusa dress was too formal. My e

  • No Longer Wanted, I Left Them Hanging   Graduation Planning

A fan hummed quietly in our principal, Mr. Cunningham’s office as I sat across from him at his desk. “I’ve reviewed your speech for Friday. It’s looking fantastic. The staff and I agree, you don’t need to make anymore modifications to it. Now, are you sure you don’t want to announce to the class that you’re valedictorian beforehand?” I shook my head. “No, Sir. I’m afraid that if we do, its going to cause problems for me. I just want to do my thing and walk out quietly.” Mr. Cunningham nodded in understanding. When I had started in my freshman year, Kylee had him and the other staff wrapped around his finger, believing that I was relentlessly bullying her. One day, near the end of that year, she played her little stair act. I begged Mr. Cunningham to review the footage before suspending me. He had been shocked to see that I was nowhere near Kylee when she fell down the entire flight of stairs. Ever since, he had worked with the staff to make sure I was as far away from her as p
