Chapter 1

Author: Walnut Bread
The moment the heating element lit up, tiny blisters bloomed across my bare skin.

Even the slightest touch sent pain tearing through me, making my whole body tremble.

I slammed my hands against the glass door in front of me, my palms turning red as I cried until my throat burned, my voice breaking with sobs.

"Mom, Dad! Please let me out! It hurts so much!"

At the sound of my shrill crying, my mom hesitated.

Then, she turned around and walked toward me.

"Mom, please save me."

Hope flared inside my chest. I knew it. My mom was only trying to punish me a little. She would never really let me suffer like this.

I would never be careless again. I would never let my little sister choke again.

My mom reached toward the oven, but instead of opening it, she stopped a short distance away and pointed at me, her face filled with disappointment.

"So, you still don't think you're wrong," she said coldly. "You're even trying to smash the oven to show how unhappy you are?

"Your sister is so young. How could you be so cruel toward her?

"If you weren't jealous that she'd inherit more than you, why would you deliberately hurt her?

"We raised you like a princess. You got the best of everything first. And yet you're so vicious that you can't even tolerate a child who doesn't have a mother."

The cry for help froze in my throat.

Suddenly, I remembered what had happened the week before. I had rushed out to bring my mom the phone she had forgotten at home when I tripped and fell hard onto the ground.

"You did that on purpose, didn't you?" she had said, looking down at me from above. "I was just about to take your sister to the amusement park, and you decided to fake a fall to gain sympathy. You want people to accuse me of favoritism, don't you?"

Her words echoed clearly in my mind.

"If you ever dare pretend to be pitiful again, get out of this house."

My body stiffened.

I clamped a hand over my mouth to stop myself from screaming. My teeth sank into my flesh until I tasted blood, but I did not dare make a sound.

The heat grew more intense. My hair began to curl and scorch, falling strand by strand onto the baking tray below.

'I'm sorry, Mom.'

It looked like that I, Yanne Bennett, had made the oven dirty.

I forced my eyes open, wanting to see my parents one last time, but instead I saw them hurriedly dressing while holding my little sister.

"Yanne really disappointed me," my mom said. "First, she wanted to steal Tanya's inheritance, and now she's trying to kill her. This time, she really needs to be taught a lesson."

My mom cried anxiously. "What should we do? Tanya has been coughing for so long that her face is completely red."

"We're going to the hospital right now."

The next moment, there was a loud bang as the front door slammed shut.

Whatever little coolness remained inside the oven seemed to vanish along with that sound.

I curled into myself in agony, my consciousness slowly slipping away.

In a daze, I thought I saw my mom smiling at me, arms open wide.

"Yanne, you're Mommy's only treasure. I'm proud of you, always."

My dad stood beside her, holding the cake he had bought for me, smiling gently.

"This is for you, Yanne. May you grow up happy, like a princess."

However, just as I reached for them, they suddenly shoved me to the ground.

"You did it on purpose, didn't you? You deliberately made Tanya choke!"

"How could we have such a vicious daughter?"

I shook my head desperately. Tears mixed with sweat and evaporated in the heat.

"No…it wasn't me. The bad kids in the neighborhood pushed her into the sandpit. I only wanted to wash her clean. I just didn't know…"

The rest of my words were swallowed by the hot air, scattered inside the sizzling oven, unheard by anyone.

Later, my dad took my mom to the cemetery. He had buried my urn there and set up a gravestone. On it were the words: [Beloved Daughter, Yanne.]My mom crouched in front of the stone, crying as she said, "Yanne, Mommy's here to see you. Is it cold here?"I've brought your favorite strawberry cake. Eat some."Mommy will come visit you often. You won't be lonely here."My dad stood beside her, staring at my name carved onto the stone. Before he could stop himself, tears slid down his face."Yanne…I will take good care of your mom."I'll take good care of Tanya, too. When she grows up, I'll tell her she has a very kind older sister."But because of our mistakes, that sister has left us forever."After that day, my mom was sent to a psychiatric hospital for treatment.Even there, she still held that Barbie doll every day, calling my name over and over.My dad visited her daily. The forensic examiner carefully pulled the white sheet over my body as the police officer beside him hurried to call for an ambulance. It did not take long before it arrived. My mom was lifted onto the stretcher and taken inside. My dad followed her into the ambulance. Before the doors closed, he turned back and looked at my body lying beneath the white sheet. Tears spilled from his eyes again as he murmured under his breath, saying, "Yanne, Daddy is sorry… We'll make it right… We'll atone…"After the ambulance drove away, the police continued their investigation at the scene.I floated in the room, watching them move busily around, and felt only the faintest trace of sadness. At last, my parents understood what they had done wrong. At last, they began to care about me again. However, it was too late.Their love was something I had once fought desperately for.I did not want it anymore.A few days later, my mom woke up. The forensic team arrived soon after. They carefully lifted my body out of the oven and laid me down on a sheet of white cloth that had been spread on the floor. One of the examiners crouched beside me and began a preliminary inspection. His movements were gentle, almost cautious, as if he were afraid of disturbing me.When my mom saw that, something in her snapped. She rushed forward like a madwoman, trying to wrap her arms around my body, but the police stopped her.She struggled wildly."Let me go! That's my Yanne! Don't touch her!"The officers held her firmly and tried to calm her down."Ma'am, please stay calm. The forensic examination is necessary. It's the only way to determine the cause of death.""The cause of death? What is there to determine?" she screamed through her tears. "We killed her! We locked her in the oven and baked her to death!"She sobbed and shouted at the same time, her voice filled with despair and crushing guilt. My dad sat on the floor, staring bl

The moment the oven door clicked open, a wave of stench rushed out, thick with burnt flesh and decay.Everyone present instinctively covered their mouths. My mom's hand froze on the oven handle. Her knuckles had turned white from gripping it too hard, and the color drained from her face in an instant, so pale it was almost lifeless. Even her lips had lost their color. Her eyes were locked on what lay inside the oven.My dad stood behind her. The faint hope still lingering in his gaze shattered the moment he saw what was inside. It was as if all the strength left his body at once. His legs buckled, and his knees slammed into the kitchen tiles with a dull thud.A nearby police officer hurried forward to support him.My dad's fingers trembled uncontrollably, his voice shaking so badly it barely held together."Yanne… Yanne?"I hovered beside them, watching the scene coldly.Just two days ago, these very people cursed me as 'vicious' while pushing me with their own hands into that

In the evening, my dad came home.As soon as he walked through the door, he asked, "Has Tanya been good today?"My mom was feeding my little sister. "Very good. She even took a two-hour nap this afternoon."My dad looked at my sister's round little face and made a suggestion."I'm off tomorrow. Why don't we take Tanya to that scenic spot on the outskirts of the city? I heard they have stroller-friendly paths, and we can take some photos of her."My mom immediately nodded."Perfect. She can get some sunlight, too."They sat at the dining table, eating while teasing my sister, chatting happily about the plan for tomorrow. Not once did they notice that someone was missing from the table. That night, after my mom put my sister to bed, she and my dad sat on the sofa watching television.Only then did my dad finally mention me. "Yanne still hasn't come out today?"My mom did not even lift her head. "She's sulking and hiding in her room. But the cake and milk on the table are gone,

When there was still no movement from the room, my mom's anger flared up again. She stormed straight into the bedroom and yanked open a locked drawer. She used to say that the drawer held the things she treasured most. When she pulled it open, what lay inside were all the gifts I had given her every Mother's Day.A card made of carefully glued flower petals, spelling out, 'I love you, Mom.'Also, a bracelet I had spent ages weaving by hand with colorful threads.I never expected that she had kept them all so carefully. However, she then tore through them like a madwoman, ripping the cards into tiny pieces without hesitation.Bits of colorful paper fluttered to the floor, covering it.I cried as I dropped to the ground, trying to gather them up and piece them back together.'Mom, don't tear them up. I worked really hard on those.'After I die, I won't be able to make you any more gifts.'However, my mom's face was cold as she picked up a pair of scissors and, without a momen
