Chapter 3

Author: Amber Fleck
"Give me back my bracelet!" I lunged at Hailey and tried to snatch the bracelet back.

It was the only keepsake my mother had left me. I'd treasured it all these years, barely daring to touch it for fear of damaging it.

And now Hailey had taken it too!

Before I could reach her, Owen suddenly shoved me to the ground. He spread his arms and planted himself firmly in front of Hailey. "I gave it to her! Just tell me how much it costs. I'll transfer the money to you right now!"

Owen raised the smartwatch I'd bought him and pretended to scan a payment code to send me the money.

I was so shocked that I couldn't even feel the pain. As I stared at my own son, my hands and feet went numb. "Owen, what did you just say?"

Owen repeated himself impatiently, "I asked how much it costs. You'll sell anything as long as someone pays you, won't you? Hurry up and name your price."

I felt as though an invisible hand had suddenly gripped my heart so tightly that I couldn't breathe.

Back when Owen was so little he could barely speak, I'd once shown him this bracelet. I'd told him it was a symbol of his grandmother.

My mother was gone forever, and this bracelet was all I had left to remember her by.

Back then, he'd buried his little face in my arms and comforted me in his childish voice, "Mommy, you still have me."

And now, with the smartwatch I'd bought him on his wrist, he wanted to buy my most precious possession just to give it to someone else.

Hailey pretended to remove the bracelet. "I'm sorry, Edith. Owen told me you never wore it, so I thought you didn't want it anymore."

Benjamin, who'd been discussing the wedding arrangements with the event planners, heard the commotion and hurried over.

When he saw Hailey removing the bracelet, he immediately turned to me in irritation. "Edith, what are you making a fuss about now? It's just a bracelet. Your wrists are too thick for it anyway, so it's just sitting around unused. What's wrong with letting Hailey wear it for a while?"

I could no longer contain my anger. "It's my mother's keepsake! Hailey Franklin, do you have to steal even this from me? Aren't you afraid my mother will come looking for you tonight?"

At my words, Benjamin's expression grew uncomfortable. "It's fine, Hailey. Give it back to her. I'll buy you a new one. Wearing something that belonged to a dead person brings bad luck."

Owen immediately chimed in with a promise of his own. "That's right! Daddy will buy you an even bigger, prettier one!"

As he spoke, he snatched the bracelet from Hailey's hand and hurled it straight at me.

"Don't throw it!" I instinctively reached out to catch it, but could only watch helplessly as the bracelet crashed onto the floor.

It shattered into pieces.

In that instant, I felt as though a part of me had shattered along with it.

I dropped to my knees and frantically gathered the fragments as tears fell in heavy drops onto the floor.

Benjamin noticed the bloody scratches on my hands, frowned, and reached out to pull me up. "Stop picking those up. It's just an inanimate object. Is it really worth all this?"

I knocked his hand away, my eyes bloodshot. Then I grabbed the divorce papers I'd prepared long ago and flung them at his face. "Forget it, Benjamin Olsen. We're getting a divo—"

Benjamin mistook the document for a share transfer agreement.

He clutched the divorce papers and looked at me coldly. "Edith, so asking for money isn't enough for you anymore? Now you've set your sights on my company?

"You probably arranged for our son to take the bracelet on purpose, didn't you? You're using my guilt to get your hands on my shares!"

He sneered and signed his name without even reading the document. "What a devious scheme. I'll let it slide this time, but don't think I'll put up with the same tricks from you twice!"

He flung the signed papers at me and walked away without looking back.

I sat on the floor, watched the pages flutter around me, and let out a bitter laugh.

He had no idea there wouldn't be another time. I was done with both him and our son.

…

In the days that followed, I spent every day at the hospital.

The money Benjamin had paid me was enough to cover not only my surgery but also all my follow-up appointments and aftercare.

Once I received my new heart, I'd finally be able to escape the tragedy of my previous life and start anew.

At long last, the day of my surgery arrived.

I was waiting to receive anesthesia when my doctor, David Griffin, suddenly pulled off his gloves.

"I'm sorry, Miss Dawson, but we can't perform your surgery today..." he said.

"Let's leave my name off the invitation for now. I want to see Benjamin's expression when he arrives at the wedding," I said.Benedict's smile deepened. He held out his hand to me. "I'm not disappointed in the person I saved. You certainly don't waste any time making decisions."I gently shook his hand. "It's a pleasure doing business with you."…On the day of the wedding, the venue was even more lavishly decorated than I'd imagined.Benedict had invited every prominent figure in the city, including many influential people Benjamin had worked so hard to curry favor with. After putting on my wedding dress, I stood before the mirror and stared at my reflection for a long time, barely able to believe what I was seeing."There's still time to change your mind." Benedict strolled up behind me and folded his arms across his chest. "You look beautiful. Benjamin's already here. Have you made up your mind?"I turned around and took his arm. "I've chosen to marry you. It has nothing to

Edith's POVI opened my eyes, my throat so dry that I could barely speak. "Am I dead?"A man chuckled softly beside me.I struggled to turn my head toward him.To my utter surprise, I found myself staring at a face I never expected to see.It was Benedict Olsen, Benjamin's younger brother, who had been raised overseas by the Olsen family. He was Benjamin's archenemy and the person most likely to threaten his position within the family.Benedict placed a glass of lemon water on the bedside table. He courteously helped me sit up before handing me the glass."Can you drink by yourself?" he asked."Yes…" I silently took the glass, my mind reeling with shock. After finishing the water, I began to feel a little better and glanced around. "Were you the one who saved me?"Benedict regarded me with interest. "You were the one who called me. Actually, I should be asking you why you listed me as your emergency contact."I was in a meeting at the office that day when my phone suddenly r

Benjamin gripped Hailey's wrist so tightly that the veins in his temples bulged. "You even had to take Edith's engagement ring?! When did you ask her for it?"When we pretended to have a wedding, I bought you a 10-carat diamond ring. Wasn't that enough for you?! Do you even have a heart?"Hailey's face flushed red, and she burst into tears. "I didn't steal it! The last time I visited your house, the ring was sitting on the coffee table, covered in dust!"Edith must have decided she was too good for you and that your engagement ring was too cheap to wear in public, so she took it off and tossed it aside!"I know you had no money when you proposed to her. You spent more than half a year saving up just to buy that 3,000-dollar ring."I felt sorry for you. I couldn't bear to see such a sincere expression of your love gathering dust, so I put it on myself!"How could you say something like that about me? I'm heartbroken!"With that, Hailey ran out of the house in tears.Benjamin did

Benjamin hurried out of the bedroom. "Edith? Is that you? Are you back?"When he opened the door, he found Hailey standing in the living room. She was holding the bouquet of sweet pink roses he'd just bought for Edith and was about to leave with it.Benjamin grabbed her wrist, his brows furrowed so deeply they could have crushed a fly. "What are you doing here? Who said you could take those flowers?"Hailey clearly hadn't expected him to be home. After a moment of surprise, she put on her usual sweet smile. "Benjamin, you're home!"Mom keeps saying she wants to go outside for some fresh air now that she's been discharged from the hospital. But she's still weak and hasn't fully recovered, so I thought I'd buy some flowers and plants to brighten up the house for her."I was going to ask you to come shopping with me, but you didn't answer your phone. When I came looking for you, I saw this bouquet in the living room and thought I'd take it for now."For some reason, although Hailey

Benjamin froze, nearly dropping his phone. His lips trembled as he asked, "What did you say? Edith has acute cardiomyopathy? How is that possible?"His ears rang, and he suddenly recalled the last time he'd seen Edith, when she'd completely lost control of herself.By the time he came to his senses, he'd already rushed to his car.…After running five red lights, Benjamin stumbled into the hospital. He snatched the computer from the reception desk and typed in Edith's name. The moment he saw the countless examination records on the screen, his legs gave way. He collapsed to the floor, utterly distraught."Edith... She really has cardiomyopathy?"He couldn't bear to imagine Edith spending the entire month he'd devoted to helping Hailey prepare for their wedding alone in the hospital, with no one by her side as she underwent treatment. She used to be so afraid of pain that even a routine blood draw terrified her. She'd always begged him to cover her eyes before she dared let the
