Chapter 4

Author: Amber Fleck
My heart clenched. "What do you mean? Why can't you perform the surgery?"

Although I'd been taking the best medication available, cardiomyopathy was a dangerous condition that could turn fatal at any moment.

While waiting for my surgery, I'd suffered at least three attacks. The worst had nearly killed me. I'd spent twelve whole hours in the emergency resuscitation room. Only through sheer determination to survive had I managed to pull through. My body couldn't afford to wait any longer.

David looked troubled. "The donor heart matched to you has just been transferred to another patient."

I clutched my chest. "Transferred? Who transferred it? Did someone offer you more money? Whatever they paid, I'll double it!"

David didn't dare answer. He put on his mask and tried to flee.

I climbed off the operating table and hurried after him, on the verge of a complete breakdown.

"You know my condition! I can't afford to wait any longer. How could you just give my donor heart to someone else?" I demanded. "This is no different from murder!"

My cries quickly attracted a crowd.

I screamed at the top of my lungs, "Who stole my heart? Do rich people really have the power to decide whether someone else lives or dies?"

The onlookers were outraged on my behalf, and it didn't take long for them to identify the person responsible.

I rushed toward him without a second thought, but the moment I recognized him, my blood ran cold.

It was Benjamin.

He stood guard right outside the operating room, refusing to let anyone inside.

Hailey, who was crying nearby, spotted me and immediately grabbed my arm.

"Edith? Are you accusing me of stealing the heart for my mother?" She dropped to her knees in front of me. "I was wrong to keep taking your things. I admit it, and I'm sorry. If you're angry, take it out on me. Please, just spare my mother!"

Benjamin's expression darkened instantly. "Edith, just because you don't have a mother anymore, does that mean Hailey has to lose hers too? How can you be so heartless?"

My fingernails dug deep into my palms, and I clenched my teeth so hard I could almost taste blood. "Benjamin Olsen, her mother has cancer! A heart transplant won't cure her. Hailey deliberately—"

Before I could finish, Hailey suddenly began bowing to me on her knees. "Edith, I'll return everything I've taken from you. I promise I'll never bother Benjamin or Owen again. I'm begging you! How much money do you want? I'll give you whatever you ask for!"

A chill spread through my entire body. I was so furious I could barely get the words out.

"Who wants your money? I want the heart! Give me back my heart!"

"Enough!" Benjamin flew into a rage and grabbed my arm. "To hurt Hailey's mother, you've even pretended to be sick and exploited other people's sympathy to cause a scene! Edith, you've gone too far this time!"

He summoned the security guards and ordered them to drag me out.

I struggled with all my might, but I couldn't break free.

My heart began pounding faster and faster, and the pain in my chest grew so unbearable that I felt as though it would burst open.

…

By the time they threw me out at the hospital entrance, a suffocating sense of impending death had completely overwhelmed me.

I reached out desperately for help, but the bystanders spat at me instead.

"Ugh! We almost fell for your lies and helped you hurt someone. And you're still pretending!"

My arm fell limply to my side.

As my consciousness faded, I had only one wish.

In my next life, I never wanted to see Benjamin again. Not ever. Not for all eternity.

Third-Person POV

After Hailey's mother underwent surgery, Benjamin wasted no time arranging his wedding to Hailey.

Yet as they prepared to exchange rings, his mind was filled with thoughts of Edith. She'd looked terribly frail at the hospital that day, and despite everything, he still couldn't quite stop worrying about her.

"I'm sorry, Hailey. Let's put the ceremony on hold for now. Your mother's already confused. She probably won't suspect anything anyway." With that, he tore off his boutonniere and called his assistant, Joseph Wilson. "Check Edith's medical records."

Ten minutes later, Joseph called back, his voice hesitant. "Mr. Olsen, the records show that your wife was diagnosed with acute cardiomyopathy. Her heart transplant was scheduled for a week ago..."

"Let's leave my name off the invitation for now. I want to see Benjamin's expression when he arrives at the wedding," I said.Benedict's smile deepened. He held out his hand to me. "I'm not disappointed in the person I saved. You certainly don't waste any time making decisions."I gently shook his hand. "It's a pleasure doing business with you."…On the day of the wedding, the venue was even more lavishly decorated than I'd imagined.Benedict had invited every prominent figure in the city, including many influential people Benjamin had worked so hard to curry favor with. After putting on my wedding dress, I stood before the mirror and stared at my reflection for a long time, barely able to believe what I was seeing."There's still time to change your mind." Benedict strolled up behind me and folded his arms across his chest. "You look beautiful. Benjamin's already here. Have you made up your mind?"I turned around and took his arm. "I've chosen to marry you. It has nothing to

Edith's POVI opened my eyes, my throat so dry that I could barely speak. "Am I dead?"A man chuckled softly beside me.I struggled to turn my head toward him.To my utter surprise, I found myself staring at a face I never expected to see.It was Benedict Olsen, Benjamin's younger brother, who had been raised overseas by the Olsen family. He was Benjamin's archenemy and the person most likely to threaten his position within the family.Benedict placed a glass of lemon water on the bedside table. He courteously helped me sit up before handing me the glass."Can you drink by yourself?" he asked."Yes…" I silently took the glass, my mind reeling with shock. After finishing the water, I began to feel a little better and glanced around. "Were you the one who saved me?"Benedict regarded me with interest. "You were the one who called me. Actually, I should be asking you why you listed me as your emergency contact."I was in a meeting at the office that day when my phone suddenly r

Benjamin gripped Hailey's wrist so tightly that the veins in his temples bulged. "You even had to take Edith's engagement ring?! When did you ask her for it?"When we pretended to have a wedding, I bought you a 10-carat diamond ring. Wasn't that enough for you?! Do you even have a heart?"Hailey's face flushed red, and she burst into tears. "I didn't steal it! The last time I visited your house, the ring was sitting on the coffee table, covered in dust!"Edith must have decided she was too good for you and that your engagement ring was too cheap to wear in public, so she took it off and tossed it aside!"I know you had no money when you proposed to her. You spent more than half a year saving up just to buy that 3,000-dollar ring."I felt sorry for you. I couldn't bear to see such a sincere expression of your love gathering dust, so I put it on myself!"How could you say something like that about me? I'm heartbroken!"With that, Hailey ran out of the house in tears.Benjamin did

Benjamin hurried out of the bedroom. "Edith? Is that you? Are you back?"When he opened the door, he found Hailey standing in the living room. She was holding the bouquet of sweet pink roses he'd just bought for Edith and was about to leave with it.Benjamin grabbed her wrist, his brows furrowed so deeply they could have crushed a fly. "What are you doing here? Who said you could take those flowers?"Hailey clearly hadn't expected him to be home. After a moment of surprise, she put on her usual sweet smile. "Benjamin, you're home!"Mom keeps saying she wants to go outside for some fresh air now that she's been discharged from the hospital. But she's still weak and hasn't fully recovered, so I thought I'd buy some flowers and plants to brighten up the house for her."I was going to ask you to come shopping with me, but you didn't answer your phone. When I came looking for you, I saw this bouquet in the living room and thought I'd take it for now."For some reason, although Hailey

Benjamin froze, nearly dropping his phone. His lips trembled as he asked, "What did you say? Edith has acute cardiomyopathy? How is that possible?"His ears rang, and he suddenly recalled the last time he'd seen Edith, when she'd completely lost control of herself.By the time he came to his senses, he'd already rushed to his car.…After running five red lights, Benjamin stumbled into the hospital. He snatched the computer from the reception desk and typed in Edith's name. The moment he saw the countless examination records on the screen, his legs gave way. He collapsed to the floor, utterly distraught."Edith... She really has cardiomyopathy?"He couldn't bear to imagine Edith spending the entire month he'd devoted to helping Hailey prepare for their wedding alone in the hospital, with no one by her side as she underwent treatment. She used to be so afraid of pain that even a routine blood draw terrified her. She'd always begged him to cover her eyes before she dared let the
