Chapter 2

Author: Amber Fleck
The moment Benjamin spotted me in the doorway, the smile froze on his face.

He hurried over and reached out to put an arm around me. "Edith, let me explain… Hailey's mother is on her deathbed, and her greatest wish is to see her daughter get married before she passes away.

"Hailey doesn't even have a boyfriend yet, so I've decided to stage a wedding with her for now. We'll have to postpone the wedding I promised you a little longer..."

I stared steadily at Hailey.

The wedding dress had originally been custom-made to my measurements, yet it fit her perfectly, even though she was a whole head shorter than me.

Hailey put on a pitiful expression and spoke softly. "Benjamin, maybe we should just forget it. Edith's been looking forward to this wedding for five years. I don't feel right about doing this."

She pretended to take off the wedding dress, but Owen stopped her and charged at me like a cannonball. "You wicked woman! You're just jealous because she looks like a fairy in her wedding dress!

"Your belly looks like the bark of an old tree. Nothing you wear could ever look good on you!"

He slammed into me so hard that I fell to the floor. The pain was so intense that I couldn't recover for a long time.

When Owen saw the pain on my face, he looked a little guilty. Still, he stood his ground, his chin raised stubbornly.

Benjamin hurried over to help me up. "Owen! How could you push your mother?"

His gaze fell on my lower abdomen, and his expression softened with a trace of concern. "Edith, if this really bothers you, I'll find someone else to pretend to marry Hailey..."

I pulled my hand away from his and got to my feet on my own.

"I don't mind." I opened the calculator on my phone. "Besides the wedding and the dress, we'll have to include the cost of your wedding night with her—"

Before I could finish calculating, Benjamin slapped my phone out of my hand. "Edith Dawson, are you out of your mind? Owen's right here!

"Hailey and I have always been completely innocent. I honestly don't understand how you've become this kind of person!"

I looked up at him. "She wants to take everything I have. I can't beat her, so what's wrong with asking for financial compensation?"

Benjamin was speechless. His chest heaved violently, as though I'd infuriated him beyond words.

"I can't be bothered to argue with you." He pulled out his phone and jabbed furiously at the screen, as if he could vent all his anger through his fingertips.

A second later, a deposit notification appeared on my phone.

"I guess I was wrong about you from the very beginning!" With that, Benjamin ushered Hailey and Owen out of the house and slammed the door so hard that the walls shook.

I stared at the string of zeros on my screen, desperately fighting back tears.

When Benjamin and I first got together, he had nothing.

We shared a single 5-dollar meal and lived in a dark, damp basement apartment.

Back then, he often felt guilty about making me suffer. After work, he'd even deliver takeout orders to earn extra money, just so he could buy me the cakes and drinks that other girls enjoyed.

When I casually mentioned how difficult it was to dry my clothes, he spent half a month's wages on a small clothes dryer for me.

One night, I caught him eating ice cubes to stave off his hunger, and I cried because my heart ached for him.

He only held me tighter and choked back tears as he apologized for making me suffer alongside him. He swore that once he had money, he'd make it all up to me.

But after he finally made it big, Hailey took away every single thing he'd bought to make up for those years.

Now, all I'd done was ask for some financial compensation for myself, yet all I got in return was his accusation that he'd been wrong about me from the start.

I took a few deep breaths and scrolled through my phone to distract myself. Instead, I found my entire social media feed filled with Hailey's posts.

Benjamin had taken her to discuss the wedding arrangements.

The mock-up images she'd posted of the wedding venue were based on the very design I'd painstakingly refined, piece by piece, to suit my own tastes.

I'd never imagined that the wedding I'd spent years dreaming of would end up being a celebration of my own husband's marriage to another woman.

I gripped my phone tightly and was just about to block her when my eyes fell on her wrist.

The moment I recognized what she was wearing, I could no longer contain myself. I grabbed my things and rushed straight to the location she'd shared!

"Let's leave my name off the invitation for now. I want to see Benjamin's expression when he arrives at the wedding," I said.Benedict's smile deepened. He held out his hand to me. "I'm not disappointed in the person I saved. You certainly don't waste any time making decisions."I gently shook his hand. "It's a pleasure doing business with you."…On the day of the wedding, the venue was even more lavishly decorated than I'd imagined.Benedict had invited every prominent figure in the city, including many influential people Benjamin had worked so hard to curry favor with. After putting on my wedding dress, I stood before the mirror and stared at my reflection for a long time, barely able to believe what I was seeing."There's still time to change your mind." Benedict strolled up behind me and folded his arms across his chest. "You look beautiful. Benjamin's already here. Have you made up your mind?"I turned around and took his arm. "I've chosen to marry you. It has nothing to

Edith's POVI opened my eyes, my throat so dry that I could barely speak. "Am I dead?"A man chuckled softly beside me.I struggled to turn my head toward him.To my utter surprise, I found myself staring at a face I never expected to see.It was Benedict Olsen, Benjamin's younger brother, who had been raised overseas by the Olsen family. He was Benjamin's archenemy and the person most likely to threaten his position within the family.Benedict placed a glass of lemon water on the bedside table. He courteously helped me sit up before handing me the glass."Can you drink by yourself?" he asked."Yes…" I silently took the glass, my mind reeling with shock. After finishing the water, I began to feel a little better and glanced around. "Were you the one who saved me?"Benedict regarded me with interest. "You were the one who called me. Actually, I should be asking you why you listed me as your emergency contact."I was in a meeting at the office that day when my phone suddenly r

Benjamin gripped Hailey's wrist so tightly that the veins in his temples bulged. "You even had to take Edith's engagement ring?! When did you ask her for it?"When we pretended to have a wedding, I bought you a 10-carat diamond ring. Wasn't that enough for you?! Do you even have a heart?"Hailey's face flushed red, and she burst into tears. "I didn't steal it! The last time I visited your house, the ring was sitting on the coffee table, covered in dust!"Edith must have decided she was too good for you and that your engagement ring was too cheap to wear in public, so she took it off and tossed it aside!"I know you had no money when you proposed to her. You spent more than half a year saving up just to buy that 3,000-dollar ring."I felt sorry for you. I couldn't bear to see such a sincere expression of your love gathering dust, so I put it on myself!"How could you say something like that about me? I'm heartbroken!"With that, Hailey ran out of the house in tears.Benjamin did

Benjamin hurried out of the bedroom. "Edith? Is that you? Are you back?"When he opened the door, he found Hailey standing in the living room. She was holding the bouquet of sweet pink roses he'd just bought for Edith and was about to leave with it.Benjamin grabbed her wrist, his brows furrowed so deeply they could have crushed a fly. "What are you doing here? Who said you could take those flowers?"Hailey clearly hadn't expected him to be home. After a moment of surprise, she put on her usual sweet smile. "Benjamin, you're home!"Mom keeps saying she wants to go outside for some fresh air now that she's been discharged from the hospital. But she's still weak and hasn't fully recovered, so I thought I'd buy some flowers and plants to brighten up the house for her."I was going to ask you to come shopping with me, but you didn't answer your phone. When I came looking for you, I saw this bouquet in the living room and thought I'd take it for now."For some reason, although Hailey

Benjamin froze, nearly dropping his phone. His lips trembled as he asked, "What did you say? Edith has acute cardiomyopathy? How is that possible?"His ears rang, and he suddenly recalled the last time he'd seen Edith, when she'd completely lost control of herself.By the time he came to his senses, he'd already rushed to his car.…After running five red lights, Benjamin stumbled into the hospital. He snatched the computer from the reception desk and typed in Edith's name. The moment he saw the countless examination records on the screen, his legs gave way. He collapsed to the floor, utterly distraught."Edith... She really has cardiomyopathy?"He couldn't bear to imagine Edith spending the entire month he'd devoted to helping Hailey prepare for their wedding alone in the hospital, with no one by her side as she underwent treatment. She used to be so afraid of pain that even a routine blood draw terrified her. She'd always begged him to cover her eyes before she dared let the
