After asking the housekeeper Mercer to compile the surveillance footage from the past three months, Ezra left with Seraphina.

My parents, Claire and Robert Hawthorne, warned Seraphina not to stay out in the cold, then went straight home to start her favorite beef bourguignon.

Last year on my birthday, Mom had made a rare phone call to ask what I wanted to eat.

Delighted by the attention, I timidly asked for lasagna, but she said it was too much trouble and told me to choose something else.

So that was how it worked. For Seraphina, even on an ordinary day, she could have whatever dish she wanted, no matter how complicated.

I followed Ezra and Seraphina as they left and watched them walk into a jewelry store together.

"Didn't you mention a while back that you needed a set of jewelry for formal occasions? I had one custom-made for you."

Seraphina planted an excited kiss on his cheek.

"Ezra, you're the best!"

Ezra didn't pull away. Instead, he ruffled her hair affectionately.

"As long as you like it. Go take a look."

This was a store we used to visit all the time.

The necklace that had marked the start of our relationship, our birthday gifts, even our wedding bands had all come from this store.

"Mr. Thorne, welcome back. We just finished a new jewelry set. Your wife will love it."

The shop owner, Martin, greeted Ezra warmly, but his smile froze when he noticed Seraphina on Ezra's arm.

"And this is...?"

Ezra's tone was flat.

"My wife's sister."

Seraphina tugged at his sleeve, clearly annoyed. Ezra softened his voice to soothe her.

"Come on, you're the most important person in my life. Happy now?"

Only then did Seraphina smile again, turning to Martin.

"That jewelry set you just mentioned. I'd like to see it."

Martin led them to the private showroom with an unreadable expression. I trailed after them along a hallway I had taken countless times.

Inside the private showroom, a set of breathtaking jewelry was arranged in a display case, every piece designed around a moon motif.

Ezra's gaze landed on the moonstone necklace at the center, and for a fleeting instant, something in his expression faltered.

The token of our love had been a moon necklace too, though it wasn't as beautiful as this one.

Back then, he had sketched the design himself and kept pushing the store to rush it so he could put the finished necklace in my hands on my birthday.

I was so moved that I said yes when he asked me out.

He had promised me then that I was his only moon.

Now he had broken that promise.

"Ezra, this set is so gorgeous! I want this one. Please?"

Ezra snapped out of his daze and looked at Seraphina gently.

"You like this set? But the one you chose last time is already finished."

Seraphina clung to his arm and pouted.

"I changed my mind. Ezra, you're not saving this set for my sister, are you?"

Ezra paused, then firmly shook his head.

"Of course not. She doesn't even deserve to be compared to you."

"If you like it, it's yours."

I stood beside them, my eyes burning, but not a single tear fell.

I didn't know if it was because spirits can't cry, or because I had already cried myself dry.

When it was time to pay, Mercer called Ezra.

"Mr. Thorne, I checked the rooftop cameras. Mrs. Thorne isn't up there, and we can't find her anywhere else."

Ezra's brow furrowed, but he smoothed it out the moment Seraphina glanced over.

"Don't worry about her. She probably decided the railing was too much work and went somewhere to slack off."

"Keep watching the feeds. When she comes back, have someone intercept her. Don't let her realize I've left."

I stood beside him, the corners of my mouth twisting.

He knew me better than anyone, yet he was also the one most willing to think the worst of me.

I had endured three months of his nitpicking and every unreasonable demand without a single complaint.

And still, he assumed I was the kind of person who would just run away.

I couldn't help but wonder: if he had been a little less suspicious, if he had noticed something was wrong, could I have been saved?

But there were no ifs.

The truth Ezra posted caused an immediate uproar. My fans and outraged strangers overran his social media accounts. Online, he became the very definition of a scumbag. But Ezra didn't care.Or rather, he accepted it. He agreed with every word.He read every comment condemning him, his expression intent and earnest."Elowen, look. They're all tearing me apart. I deserve it.""When you were alive, you were always so careful to keep me out of the spotlight. You said you were afraid people would come after me because of you. You wanted to protect me."Over the past few days, Ezra had taken to talking to the empty air like this, as though I were still beside him."Your parents posted a clarification online too.""We were blind. We took your love and your devotion and used them against you.""We all regret it now, Elowen.""I'd give anything to see you one more time. You won't even visit me in my dreams. Have I disappointed you that completely?"Ezra pulled my moon necklace from the pocket s

News of Seraphina's arrest exploded across the internet. At first, her fans tried to contain the fallout, calling it a misunderstanding. But the police quickly issued an official statement confirming her arrest and identifying her as the prime suspect in my death. The internet erupted."Who died? Elowen?""Didn't I just see that story about her sending money to her parents? What happened?""Wait, they're sisters? What a nightmare family."My fans flooded my social media accounts, asking for any sign that I was still alive and refusing to believe I was really gone.In the end, it was Ezra who posted a statement from his own account."My wife, Elowen Thorne, died in a fall. Please respect her memory and let her rest in peace.""Everything circulated online about Elowen was maliciously manufactured by Seraphina and me.""Once I've organized everything, I'll release all the evidence and explain what really happened."Ezra's statement drove even more attention to the story, and every media

Ezra, my parents, and even Officer Reed all turned to look at Seraphina. She realized what had come out of her mouth and scrambled to explain."No, I... I got flustered and said the wrong thing. What I meant was that her death really was an accident, and Ezra shouldn't keep blaming himself."Mom sank to the ground, as though seeing Seraphina for the very first time."That's your sister, Seraphina. She's dead. She's lying right there. How can you say something like that?"Dad stared at her too, red-eyed and utterly disappointed."Seraphina, we couldn't be more disappointed in you!"Seraphina was so flustered she couldn't form a sentence. Tears streamed down her cheeks, but this time, nobody rushed to comfort her.She grabbed Ezra's arm, trying to win him over the way she always had."Ezra, you wouldn't misunderstand me, right?"Ezra peeled her fingers off one by one, his gaze terrifyingly cold."Sending Elowen up to fix the rooftop railing was your idea.""You said you wanted me to take

When I saw my parents arrive, Mom still had a faint smear of sauce on her sleeve. It had probably happened while she was making Seraphina's beef bourguignon. The moment she spotted the officers in the courtyard, her knees buckled. She and Dad, equally unsteady, clung to each other just to stay upright."Elowen... where's Elowen?"Officer Reed pointed in my direction.Ezra remained on his knees beside my body, perfectly still, like a statue stripped of life.Mom walked over, stared at my body in disbelief for a long time, then spun around and slapped Ezra across the face."You said she'd be safe! You said her life wasn't in danger! So why is my daughter dead?!"Seraphina rushed over and pulled Mom away."Mom, stop! She slipped and fell. Ezra had nothing to do with it!"Mom stared at Seraphina through red-rimmed eyes."Seraphina, that's your sister lying there. Your own sister. How can you side with him over her?""Her death was an accident! She slipped and fell, and I'm heartbroken too!

By the time Ezra arrived back at the treatment center, the medical examiner was pulling a white sheet over my body.He seized Mercer by the arm, unable to look in my direction."Where's Elowen? Where is she?"Mercer stared at him, his face ashen."Mr. Thorne, Mrs. Thorne... she's right there.""You're telling me that's Elowen under that sheet? No. I don't believe it!""Where is she? Tell her to come out and see me!"The medical examiner who had covered me walked over to him, her tone cold."We've confirmed the victim's identity as Elowen Thorne, an actress. She died from blood loss caused by the fall."Ezra turned to face her, his eyes bloodshot."What did you say? What does that mean?"The medical examiner frowned."The center's surveillance footage shows Mrs. Thorne falling from the roof while repairing the railing. The railing had deteriorated with age, and the roof surface was slick.""Mrs. Thorne did not die immediately after the fall. Roughly three hours passed between the time s

The moment my parents published their post, the people Ezra had lined up began reposting it.The footage he had been collecting over the past three months was edited and released, spreading like wildfire online. In the videos, I looked painfully submissive. No matter what he put me through, I kept smiling, apologizing, and trying to placate him.Ezra had been edited out entirely, leaving only me on screen in what looked like an absurd one-woman show."Oh my God, is she really like that?""That groveling face makes me sick!""She talks such a big game, but look at her in real life. She just takes it? Disgusting.""Done being a fan. Being that spineless is just pathetic."Seraphina scrolled through the comments, barely holding back a smile before quickly wiping it away and turning to Ezra with innocent, pitiful eyes."Ezra, people are being so harsh. Don't you feel a little sorry for her?"Ezra scoffed."Sorry for what? Nobody forced her to act like that. I just showed the world who she
