Every inch of my body screamed with pain. It felt like every bone had shattered on impact.

The chill from blood loss seeped into my bones, numbing me until I couldn't even cry out.

My sister, Seraphina Hawthorne, spoke to Ezra in a sweet, coaxing voice that drifted down from upstairs.

"Ezra, did you hear something outside the window just now?"

Ezra's silhouette appeared at the window.

A tiny spark of hope flickered inside my chest. Maybe he would save me. Even just a single call to 911 would be enough.

But he only gave a casual glance downward and didn't spot me, hidden beneath the trees and shrubs.

"It's nothing. Elowen probably knocked something off the roof. She's always been clumsy."

"Ezra, don't you think we've gone too far? I mean, all she did was have a bit of a temper."

"We haven't gone too far. She humiliated you in front of everyone by saying your acting was terrible. She had this coming."

Six months ago, Seraphina had appeared on a competitive acting show where I was one of the judges.

Her acting had always been awful. She coasted entirely on her looks and the buzz that came with being my sister.

I was the first judge to critique her, and I gave an honest assessment of the flaws in her performance.

The other judges, knowing I had always been rigorous when it came to acting, didn't go easy on Seraphina either.

On the show, she smiled and thanked us for the feedback. Off camera, she ran crying to Ezra.

Ezra and I had a huge fight over it.

He blamed me for not looking out for Seraphina. I insisted on keeping the show fair.

I didn't think much of that argument.

But I never imagined he would retaliate like this, or that his scheme would end with me falling from the roof.

The pain and cold gradually faded. My body felt lighter and lighter.

So this is what dying feels like?

The instant all sensation disappeared, I felt myself floating in midair.

I looked down and, for the first time, saw my own body from the outside.

I had wasted away over these past months, so gaunt my bones jutted out. There was no trace of the radiant woman who had once lit up the screen.

Gazing at my own body lying in a pool of blood, I closed my eyes.

‘I'm sorry.’ I said to myself internally. I never got to chase my dreams. And now I'm going to die.

After my spirit left my body, I drifted aimlessly until I found myself beside Ezra.

He had his arm around Seraphina, and together with my parents, they were plotting their next move against me.

"Elowen has always been admired for her independent, self-made image. Once we destroy that persona, her standing in the industry will crumble on its own."

"I had cameras installed throughout the treatment center. We just need to edit the footage and release clips of her groveling to keep me happy. That'll do it."

Mom nodded eagerly beside them.

"That's a great idea. When the time comes, we'll back it up online too."

"But Ezra, this won't actually put Elowen in real danger, will it? I've been seeing a lot of news lately about celebrities taking their own lives because of the pressure."

Ezra let out a scornful laugh.

"Elowen would be the last person to do that. She still has to earn enough to keep that precious little theater company of hers alive."

"Don't worry. She's still my wife, after all. I won't let her end up out of work and starving. I'm only teaching her a lesson."

Mom let out a sigh of relief.

"Good. As long as she doesn't die. She made Seraphina feel bad, so she deserves a little suffering."

I floated beside them, a bitter smile on my face.

The slightest hurt to Seraphina was a catastrophe to them.

When it came to me, the bar was simply "as long as she doesn't die."

Still, Ezra really did know me. As long as there was the faintest hope, I would cling to life.

More than a dozen people in my theater company were still fighting beside me for our shared dream, and we had promised to reach the top together.

But fate doesn't ask for permission. Not from me, and not from him.

The truth Ezra posted caused an immediate uproar. My fans and outraged strangers overran his social media accounts. Online, he became the very definition of a scumbag. But Ezra didn't care.Or rather, he accepted it. He agreed with every word.He read every comment condemning him, his expression intent and earnest."Elowen, look. They're all tearing me apart. I deserve it.""When you were alive, you were always so careful to keep me out of the spotlight. You said you were afraid people would come after me because of you. You wanted to protect me."Over the past few days, Ezra had taken to talking to the empty air like this, as though I were still beside him."Your parents posted a clarification online too.""We were blind. We took your love and your devotion and used them against you.""We all regret it now, Elowen.""I'd give anything to see you one more time. You won't even visit me in my dreams. Have I disappointed you that completely?"Ezra pulled my moon necklace from the pocket s

News of Seraphina's arrest exploded across the internet. At first, her fans tried to contain the fallout, calling it a misunderstanding. But the police quickly issued an official statement confirming her arrest and identifying her as the prime suspect in my death. The internet erupted."Who died? Elowen?""Didn't I just see that story about her sending money to her parents? What happened?""Wait, they're sisters? What a nightmare family."My fans flooded my social media accounts, asking for any sign that I was still alive and refusing to believe I was really gone.In the end, it was Ezra who posted a statement from his own account."My wife, Elowen Thorne, died in a fall. Please respect her memory and let her rest in peace.""Everything circulated online about Elowen was maliciously manufactured by Seraphina and me.""Once I've organized everything, I'll release all the evidence and explain what really happened."Ezra's statement drove even more attention to the story, and every media

Ezra, my parents, and even Officer Reed all turned to look at Seraphina. She realized what had come out of her mouth and scrambled to explain."No, I... I got flustered and said the wrong thing. What I meant was that her death really was an accident, and Ezra shouldn't keep blaming himself."Mom sank to the ground, as though seeing Seraphina for the very first time."That's your sister, Seraphina. She's dead. She's lying right there. How can you say something like that?"Dad stared at her too, red-eyed and utterly disappointed."Seraphina, we couldn't be more disappointed in you!"Seraphina was so flustered she couldn't form a sentence. Tears streamed down her cheeks, but this time, nobody rushed to comfort her.She grabbed Ezra's arm, trying to win him over the way she always had."Ezra, you wouldn't misunderstand me, right?"Ezra peeled her fingers off one by one, his gaze terrifyingly cold."Sending Elowen up to fix the rooftop railing was your idea.""You said you wanted me to take

When I saw my parents arrive, Mom still had a faint smear of sauce on her sleeve. It had probably happened while she was making Seraphina's beef bourguignon. The moment she spotted the officers in the courtyard, her knees buckled. She and Dad, equally unsteady, clung to each other just to stay upright."Elowen... where's Elowen?"Officer Reed pointed in my direction.Ezra remained on his knees beside my body, perfectly still, like a statue stripped of life.Mom walked over, stared at my body in disbelief for a long time, then spun around and slapped Ezra across the face."You said she'd be safe! You said her life wasn't in danger! So why is my daughter dead?!"Seraphina rushed over and pulled Mom away."Mom, stop! She slipped and fell. Ezra had nothing to do with it!"Mom stared at Seraphina through red-rimmed eyes."Seraphina, that's your sister lying there. Your own sister. How can you side with him over her?""Her death was an accident! She slipped and fell, and I'm heartbroken too!

By the time Ezra arrived back at the treatment center, the medical examiner was pulling a white sheet over my body.He seized Mercer by the arm, unable to look in my direction."Where's Elowen? Where is she?"Mercer stared at him, his face ashen."Mr. Thorne, Mrs. Thorne... she's right there.""You're telling me that's Elowen under that sheet? No. I don't believe it!""Where is she? Tell her to come out and see me!"The medical examiner who had covered me walked over to him, her tone cold."We've confirmed the victim's identity as Elowen Thorne, an actress. She died from blood loss caused by the fall."Ezra turned to face her, his eyes bloodshot."What did you say? What does that mean?"The medical examiner frowned."The center's surveillance footage shows Mrs. Thorne falling from the roof while repairing the railing. The railing had deteriorated with age, and the roof surface was slick.""Mrs. Thorne did not die immediately after the fall. Roughly three hours passed between the time s

The moment my parents published their post, the people Ezra had lined up began reposting it.The footage he had been collecting over the past three months was edited and released, spreading like wildfire online. In the videos, I looked painfully submissive. No matter what he put me through, I kept smiling, apologizing, and trying to placate him.Ezra had been edited out entirely, leaving only me on screen in what looked like an absurd one-woman show."Oh my God, is she really like that?""That groveling face makes me sick!""She talks such a big game, but look at her in real life. She just takes it? Disgusting.""Done being a fan. Being that spineless is just pathetic."Seraphina scrolled through the comments, barely holding back a smile before quickly wiping it away and turning to Ezra with innocent, pitiful eyes."Ezra, people are being so harsh. Don't you feel a little sorry for her?"Ezra scoffed."Sorry for what? Nobody forced her to act like that. I just showed the world who she
