Chapter 2

Author: Spectate With Grace
The next day, it started raining heavily after work.

As I stood at the office entrance, I realized I had forgotten my umbrella.

I was debating whether to wait or run out and get a cab when a black sedan pulled up. It was Enzo's car.

I took a step forward without thinking, but before I could get close, Megan had already opened the passenger door and gotten in. She moved as though she had done it plenty of times before.

I stood just out of the rain, watching her look down to fasten her seat belt, and Enzo turned to speak to her. They seemed so familiar with each other and so at ease.

Then, he looked up at me. "People from work are right behind you. We shouldn't leave together."

I froze on the spot. Megan and I shared the same apartment used for staff quarters. We were going to the same place, yet he drove her home and left me behind once again.

Again, it was because he did not want anyone to suspect we were together.

The car drove off. I watched as its taillights disappeared into the rain and suddenly felt so very, very cold.

Later, I ran out into the rain alone and stood by the road trying to hail a cab. My hair was completely drenched and my shoes were fully soaked.

When I finally hailed a cab, my clothes were still dripping, and the driver handed me a pack of tissues. I thanked him quietly and turned toward the window.

The glass grew foggier, and I wiped a small patch clear, my fingers numb with cold. For those few seconds by the entrance, I had actually thought Enzo would let me get in his car.

The apartment was empty when I got back. I changed out of my wet clothes and sat on the edge of the bed for a long time, staring into nothing in particular. My phone remained silent. No one asked if I had gotten a cab or if I was soaked.

It was nearly eleven when Megan came back, carrying iced tea. She started explaining as soon as she walked in. "You're still up? He was just going to drop me off, but then I thought, why not take one last look at the city before I leave? It looked so pretty in the rain, so we drove around for a bit."

She held out a cup with a smile and said she had brought one for me too.

I did not take it. Instead, I opened her social media page.

Her newest post was right at the top. It showed rain streaking the car window, a blurred view of the city at night, and a photo of a hand on the steering wheel, taken from the passenger seat.

I recognized that hand.

The caption was one line: [We're saying goodbye to this city.]

I stared at the post, a painful tightness in my chest.

I was the one who was saying goodbye.

While I stood soaked and miserable in the rain trying to get a cab, they had been driving through that same rain, admiring the city lights and taking pictures to remember it.

I turned off my screen and said nothing after that.

That night, I caught a fever. I felt cold all over, but my forehead burned. I kept waking up throughout the night.

The next morning, I forced myself to text Enzo: [I've got a fever. Can I take half a day off?]

He replied right away: [There's a big meeting today. Megan has a sore throat and can't present. Take some medicine and push through it for now.]

I stared at the words "push through it" and could not help but smile mockingly at myself.

So, I went to work anyway.

As soon as I sat down, Megan came over and said I looked awful. She said she had medicine in her bag and that I should take a pill. I was so dizzy that I did not think twice. I accepted the pill and swallowed it.

Halfway through the meeting, I realized something was wrong. My eyelids kept growing heavier, and I felt lost in a fog. My head felt sluggish, and I could barely make out what the speaker was saying.

I knew I could not collapse. No one would remember why I could not keep going at a meeting like this. They would only remember how I had messed up.

But in the end, I could not stay on my feet.

When it was my turn to stand and add to the presentation, I braced a hand against the edge of the table and started to stand. Everything suddenly went black, and I lost control, toppling sideways.

That direction was where Enzo was.

I was not trying to make him catch me. I simply had no strength left and had instinctively leaned toward someone nearby.

Then, I saw him step back. It was just one small step, but it was already enough to let me fall. My forehead struck the table corner, and pain flashed white behind my eyes.

The conference room went silent. Even the sound of rustling papers stopped.

I braced myself against the floor, my ears ringing, but I could still make out the shoes closest to me.

He had not caught me. He had moved away.

Instincts could not lie. The way he reacted without thinking had revealed how he truly felt.

A year later, I got engaged. After that, I got married. The wedding was small, and we only invited the people closest to us, but the celebration was very lively. Everyone gathered around Zachary and me, laughing and chatting. No one had to worry about appearances, and no one made me stand at the edge of any photo. Standing on the stage in my wedding dress, I suddenly felt a little distracted. Such a day had truly come. I did not have to edge toward anyone or worry about standing in the wrong place. All eyes were on me. The man beside me held my hand openly, as if it were the most natural thing in the world. As we exchanged rings, I caught a glimpse of the last row out of the corner of my eye and briefly paused. Enzo had come too. He wore a suit and sat quietly in the farthest corner. He never did anything out of place. He just sat there and watched the entire ceremony. I glanced at him once and felt nothing. It was not that I was being gracious. By then, I just did not

Our team finished the project with excellent results. I was promoted and put in charge of more important projects with a small new team to lead. When the promotion email was sent out, congratulations filled the group chat. Even my boss, despite how stern he was, sent me a private message saying I had done well. I looked at the screen, feeling calm. It wasn't that I was unhappy. It just felt different from before. In the past, I had wanted to be noticed. To be recognized and to prove I was as good as anyone else. But back then, I had always had to put up with so much unfair treatment just to get a little recognition. Now, I did good work and was then justly rewarded. It was that simple. During that time, a certain Zachary Weiss gradually grew closer to me. He was very different from Enzo. He never left me guessing. If he liked me, he showed it. If he cared, he made it known. If he wanted to stand beside me, he did it openly. When I had an upset stomach, he would have a lig

Enzo eventually got a chance to speak to me alone. The site inspection ended late that day. Everyone else had already left, and I was alone inside the basement parking garage, sorting through some documents. When I heard footsteps behind me, I hardly needed to turn around to know who it was. I put the last page in place before looking up. It was Enzo, just as I had expected. He stood a short distance away and watched me for a long time before asking me one question. "You really don't need me anymore, do you?" The question sounded so bizarre the moment I heard it. He had told me repeatedly not to get too close, not to let anyone find out, and not to cause him trouble. Yet now, he was the one who deliberately came over to ask if I still needed him? I looked at him and answered nonchalantly. "I never needed you in the past. I just wanted to build a future with you." The look in his eyes changed at once. Perhaps he finally understood the most foolish thing he had done over th

Once our companies began working together, Enzo started sending me texts constantly. [Do you have time to talk?] [I want to talk to you alone, just once.] [Jessie, we can't just end things like this.] I saw every message but never replied. I was way too busy now. Even when we occasionally ran into each other by the elevators at his company's headquarters, I only gave Enzo a brief nod and polite greeting before going back to discussing work with whoever was beside me. That politeness hurt him more than outright frostiness. That was because it meant he was a stranger to me again. There was no hate, and I was not waiting for him. I simply did not care anymore. Megan noticed too. At first, she could pretend nothing was wrong and tell herself it was only a partnership, with nothing to worry about. But she soon learned that pretending not to care did not make things go away. People at her company's headquarters started comparing her to me without even thinking about it. Cli

Enzo was clearly distracted once the meeting began. However, I did not make things difficult for him. While he was presenting, I looked down and went through the documents. When he stumbled with his presentation, I did not even look up. Business was business. As the client's representative, I gave him every professional courtesy. That was exactly why it made it harder for him. If I had been cold or attacked his work deliberately, it would at least have shown that I still held some grudge. But I did nothing at all. Instead, I looked at him like any other business partner, as if I had put those three years behind me. Halfway through the meeting, the team from headquarters brought out a document outlining their expertise to back up their presentation. A few pages in, I recognized it. Much of the framework came from the approach I had laid out before leaving. Even the risk breakdown and order of implementation were almost unchanged. They had simply put it into a new template

The office was quite lively over the next few days. Enzo and Megan's official transfer was approaching, and everyone was wishing them well. People gathered around them, asking them not to forget their old coworkers and to put in a good word for them once they got there. I seemed to be the only person everyone had forgotten. Yet more and more of the work was passed on to me. I barely had time to breathe during the day, and I had to work overtime at night on my own. Laughter often drifted in from outside. They got to have fun, but I had to handle the mess they left behind. I arrived home very late on my dad's birthday, but both my parents were still awake. My mother frowned when she saw me. "You're late again. Is your work that busy?" My father asked me what I had been busy with. I was quiet for a moment before telling them. "Enzo and Megan are getting transferred to headquarters. A lot of their workload has been dumped on me." My mother frowned at that. "Why do they ge
