Chapter 2

Author: Mohini
Jess sent me a new friend request and opened her social media feed to me.

On the very day I was locked away in the psychiatric hospital, Steve had taken her to an auction to pick out jewelry.

I still remembered that first day. Unable to bear the inhumane torture, I'd done everything I could to hide in the bathroom and call him.

The first time, he hung up.

The second time, the call disconnected on its own.

The third time, his phone was off.

Caught with a phone I wasn't allowed to have, I was immediately put through high-intensity electroshock therapy.

Eventually, I learned to cooperate with the "treatment." I never wanted to run again.

I kept scrolling, and what I saw stung my eyes.

On the day of my mother's funeral, my father had shown up dressed to the nines at his mistress's birthday party and announced their relationship.

And they had deliberately set their wedding for tomorrow, which was both Jess's birthday and the anniversary of my mother's death.

That evening, Steve brought a tray of food down to the basement.

He tried to feed me with a spoon like he used to, but I turned my head away.

He looked a little surprised, and his face soured. "Are you still sulking?"

During my three years in the psychiatric hospital, the only thing that had kept me going was imagining him being gentle with me.

But now, the heart that had longed for warmth had gone completely cold.

The air between us, which had thawed slightly, plunged back to freezing. Steve angrily slammed down the bowl and utensils.

"We only brought you home because we thought you'd learned your lesson. I didn't expect you to be as stubborn as ever!

"Jess never meant for any of that to happen. Your mother was the one who insisted Jess's mother was a mistress and kept making trouble. That's how she ended up dead!"

My heart dropped with a sharp, painful jolt.

I still remembered Jess driving over my mother again and again, a twisted smile on her face.

Warm blood had splattered by my feet.

When I had rushed toward her, Steve practically flew to restrain me, soothing me over and over. "The ambulance is almost here. Don't be scared."

So back then, he had been thinking that my mother got what she deserved.

I laughed bitterly at myself and threw the divorce agreement, already signed by both of us, at him. "Her mother was a mistress! Let's get a divorce!"

Steve froze, then gave a cold smile I couldn't read. "Divorce? You know how much I hate being threatened!

"But there's something you need to know. Right now, you're the other woman!"

The moment he finished, a marriage certificate stamped with an embossed seal landed on me.

And the person listed as his wife wasn't me. It was Jess.

Even though I'd already decided on a divorce, I couldn't hold back my tears.

So it had all been a lie from the start.

In that moment, the divorce agreement looked like a joke.

I was too devastated to even cry.

Steve thought I regretted it, and for once, he sounded almost like he was explaining himself. "This was your father's idea. After all, you already have everything, while Jess and her mother have been wronged their whole lives. Besides, a marriage certificate doesn't mean anything.

"Be good. As long as you can accept Jess, I'll make you the rightful Mrs. Machleit someday."

With that, he took a call from Jess, left, and never came back.

That same night, he flew abroad with Jess to pick out her birthday present.

They sat together by the sea, waiting for the sunrise, and he played the piano piece from when we first fell in love.

The tender devotion I once knew so well now belonged to another woman.

It felt as if something inside me was caving in.

When Jess posted the photos, the commenters called her "Mrs. Machleit" and took shots at me.

[A man's love goes wherever his money goes. She's lucky he didn't throw the crazy one out.]

[You and your mother both slept your way up, didn't you? No wonder nobody cared when one died and the other went crazy.]

Steve chose to stand by and watch coldly.

I knew he was proving a point to me. If I didn't obey, I could only peek at their happiness like a rat in the gutter.

He wanted me to take back what I'd said about the divorce.

But I never would again.

Then, early the next morning, I was jolted awake by music suddenly blaring outside the door.

I'd thought I would never see Steve again. Now that he had shown up, I didn't feel the slightest flutter in my heart.More than anything, I felt disgust."What are you doing here?"At my words, Steve froze, then pressed his lips together. "I know you're upset about that fake marriage certificate. Let's get married right away. Let's go back to the way things were, okay?"I suddenly found it a little funny. Even now, he still thought I was being unreasonable, that I was just mad at him for secretly giving me a fake marriage certificate. He would probably never understand the pain of being betrayed by both my husband and my father.I held back my anger. "I never said I wanted to marry you. Let's just not see each other again. Ever."Steve clearly hadn't expected me to say that. Disbelief was written all over his face. "I only married Jess to keep her calm. I was afraid you'd overthink it, so I never told you. How can you act like this?"Hearing the accusation in his voice, I was

When the fire spread to me, I instinctively escaped through the back door.In that moment, my utterly foolish impulse turned into something else: I was done with Steve and my father for good.I flagged down a taxi with all my strength and got far away from that place so full of disappointment. When I looked at my phone again, I realized Steve and my father both believed I had died in the fire.Grief-stricken as they were, they still refused to give up and posted missing-person notices online. Then, among the flood of posts, a former employee of the psychiatric hospital mentioned me and shared a lot of horrifying photos.[Why are you pretending to care now? I saw with my own eyes how Alicia was electrocuted, drugged, and even beaten. It's a miracle she's still alive!][If I had to guess, that illegitimate daughter of yours, Jess, set it all up. I couldn't stand watching it and couldn't do anything about it, so I quit.]...The replies under the post were full of shock and pity.

"A high probability of what?"With no time left to think, Steve raced frantically back to Alicia's mother's old home. When he saw the familiar belongings strewn across the ground, the blood in his veins ran cold."Her shoes, her bag... These all belong to Alicia."David also rushed over once he heard the news, only to black out and collapse on the spot."Wh-what on earth happened here?"The neighbors all started talking at once."We heard things being smashed in the house earlier. It sounded like Alicia was fighting with someone. Then a huge fire broke out, and we never saw her come out."At this, Steve was on the verge of breaking down. "How could anyone have been here? I didn't send anyone here!"Only then did he notice the porcelain shards nearby, along with the broken memorial photo."Who did this?!"Jess's guilt kicked in at once, and she hurried forward to steer them in the wrong direction. "Who would ever be that bold? Alicia must have staged all this..."Before she

Not far away, thick smoke billowed from the old house as neighbors scattered in every direction."It was fine a minute ago. How did it suddenly catch fire?"Steve turned toward the voice. It was Alicia's mother's old home."It can't be..."With no time to think, he tossed aside the flowers in his hand and rushed toward it.David was completely stunned. After all, he was the one who had just bought the old home, and only to teach Alicia a lesson. But flames raged everywhere, and the fire was far too fierce to get anywhere near.Steve had taken only a single step forward when the smoke choked him so badly he couldn't breathe, and a falling beam nearly crushed him. When the firefighters arrived, his voice was practically trembling. "I heard someone's trapped inside. Please, search carefully."Over and over, he silently prayed that it wasn't Alicia.Knowing her temper, she'd definitely come to stop the sale once she found out her mother's belongings were being auctioned off.But

Tears gushed from my eyes, and I almost laughed out loud. The threatening face of the man in front of me would never again match the Steve I once knew.A trace of helplessness flashed in his eyes, as if he were remembering how I had sobbed uncontrollably the day I lost my mother."As long as you clear things up, I'll divorce Jess and marry you."But Steve, that was never what I cared about. In despair, I closed my eyes for a moment. Then I stumbled as I pushed him away and spoke to the cameras."Jess's mother was never a mistress. My mother had mental problems and falsely accused Jess and her mother. I'm sorry..."Almost instantly, the internet exploded. My mother and I were nailed to the pillar of shame, and on the anniversary of her death, she was called a "crazy old hag."Steve remained unmoved, while my father, his arm around his mistress, actually looked relieved. At that moment, Jess suddenly shrieked and waved a video on her phone."Alicia, how could you have someone

Every memorial photo and keepsake of my mother's had been swapped out for festive decorations. When I showed up disheveled and unkempt, everyone turned to stare at me strangely."Isn't that the crazy one? How did she get out of the psychiatric hospital?""Her father's getting married, and her sister's having a birthday party. It's a double celebration! Of course she had to come join the fun!" someone said, laughing."Isn't she worried about embarrassing Mr. Machleit? Looks like there's going to be a new Mrs. Machleit."...Dressed in a gorgeous gown, Jess walked over with her arm looped through Steve's."Alicia, you've been through so much. I know you've never liked me or my mother, but we're going to be family from now on, so let's try to get along."On her wrist was the Machleit family heirloom bracelet, which only a rightful Machleit daughter-in-law was entitled to wear.So Steve had given it to her long ago.Jess wore a friendly smile, but her nails dug hard into my arm.
