Chapter 1

Author: Mohini
The truth hit me so suddenly that my head spun, and my chest felt stuffed with cotton.

Steve Machleit wiped away my tears with infinite gentleness and went on, "Actually, while you were sedated, we took the chance to have you put your thumbprint on a settlement agreement.

"But the dose was too high. We only found out you'd been pregnant after you miscarried, and since we were busy celebrating with Jess at the time, we forgot to come see you."

I still remembered.

After Jess Plaxton ran down and killed my mother, Catherine Eaton, I'd rushed to the police station, my belly round with pregnancy.

Then came one shot of sedative. Blood slowly trickled down my legs as I was forced to press my thumbprint onto a sheet of paper.

But no one told me that piece of paper had bought my mother's killer three years of freedom.

My face was ice-cold, and my throat had gone hoarse from crying. "Why are you only telling me now..."

My father, David Plaxton, was driving. He looked at me in the rearview mirror and sighed.

"I was afraid you wouldn't settle down and repent in there. Now that you've learned your lesson, you won't hurt Jess even if you know the truth."

Repent?

When I learned the truth, all I did was slap Jess once, and it cost me three years of imprisonment.

The endless pills were so bitter they made me vomit violently, and the electroshock therapy kept knocking me unconscious.

And all of it was their revenge for that one slap.

I laughed, a terrible, broken sound, and lunged at my father behind the wheel.

The car swerved hard.

"Alicia, have you lost your mind?!"

Steve pinned me tightly in his arms, and I screamed wildly, "Yes, I've lost my mind!"

My mother's corpse was barely cold when my father promised his mistress a lifetime together, right there on the spot.

Then he joined forces with my husband to let my mother's killer walk free.

I should've gone mad long ago!

Once we got home, they locked me in the basement.

My father held up a photo of himself and his mistress and told me to call her "Mom."

I spat on it. "No."

Seeing the stubbornness in my eyes, he gave up and answered a phone call. On his way out, he warned me, "Camilla is going to treat you like her own daughter, so you'd better learn to respect her!"

With a furious scream, I hurled the photo album, and it burst apart.

A shard sliced open Steve's face, and blood welled from the cut.

He didn't dodge, but he frowned in disgust. "If you keep treating Jess like this, I won't mind sending you back in there!"

Only when he saw the blood and tears mingling on my face did he crouch down to meet my eyes. "If you can let bygones be bygones and accept Jess and her mother, everything will go back to the way it was.

"Whether you want to rejoin this family is up to you."

With that, he stood up and slammed the door behind him.

But none of them knew that when they signed my discharge papers, a divorce agreement and a disownment agreement had been tucked in among them.

I didn't want any part of this "family" that only loved an illegitimate daughter and a mistress!

I'd thought I would never see Steve again. Now that he had shown up, I didn't feel the slightest flutter in my heart.More than anything, I felt disgust."What are you doing here?"At my words, Steve froze, then pressed his lips together. "I know you're upset about that fake marriage certificate. Let's get married right away. Let's go back to the way things were, okay?"I suddenly found it a little funny. Even now, he still thought I was being unreasonable, that I was just mad at him for secretly giving me a fake marriage certificate. He would probably never understand the pain of being betrayed by both my husband and my father.I held back my anger. "I never said I wanted to marry you. Let's just not see each other again. Ever."Steve clearly hadn't expected me to say that. Disbelief was written all over his face. "I only married Jess to keep her calm. I was afraid you'd overthink it, so I never told you. How can you act like this?"Hearing the accusation in his voice, I was

When the fire spread to me, I instinctively escaped through the back door.In that moment, my utterly foolish impulse turned into something else: I was done with Steve and my father for good.I flagged down a taxi with all my strength and got far away from that place so full of disappointment. When I looked at my phone again, I realized Steve and my father both believed I had died in the fire.Grief-stricken as they were, they still refused to give up and posted missing-person notices online. Then, among the flood of posts, a former employee of the psychiatric hospital mentioned me and shared a lot of horrifying photos.[Why are you pretending to care now? I saw with my own eyes how Alicia was electrocuted, drugged, and even beaten. It's a miracle she's still alive!][If I had to guess, that illegitimate daughter of yours, Jess, set it all up. I couldn't stand watching it and couldn't do anything about it, so I quit.]...The replies under the post were full of shock and pity.

"A high probability of what?"With no time left to think, Steve raced frantically back to Alicia's mother's old home. When he saw the familiar belongings strewn across the ground, the blood in his veins ran cold."Her shoes, her bag... These all belong to Alicia."David also rushed over once he heard the news, only to black out and collapse on the spot."Wh-what on earth happened here?"The neighbors all started talking at once."We heard things being smashed in the house earlier. It sounded like Alicia was fighting with someone. Then a huge fire broke out, and we never saw her come out."At this, Steve was on the verge of breaking down. "How could anyone have been here? I didn't send anyone here!"Only then did he notice the porcelain shards nearby, along with the broken memorial photo."Who did this?!"Jess's guilt kicked in at once, and she hurried forward to steer them in the wrong direction. "Who would ever be that bold? Alicia must have staged all this..."Before she

Not far away, thick smoke billowed from the old house as neighbors scattered in every direction."It was fine a minute ago. How did it suddenly catch fire?"Steve turned toward the voice. It was Alicia's mother's old home."It can't be..."With no time to think, he tossed aside the flowers in his hand and rushed toward it.David was completely stunned. After all, he was the one who had just bought the old home, and only to teach Alicia a lesson. But flames raged everywhere, and the fire was far too fierce to get anywhere near.Steve had taken only a single step forward when the smoke choked him so badly he couldn't breathe, and a falling beam nearly crushed him. When the firefighters arrived, his voice was practically trembling. "I heard someone's trapped inside. Please, search carefully."Over and over, he silently prayed that it wasn't Alicia.Knowing her temper, she'd definitely come to stop the sale once she found out her mother's belongings were being auctioned off.But

Tears gushed from my eyes, and I almost laughed out loud. The threatening face of the man in front of me would never again match the Steve I once knew.A trace of helplessness flashed in his eyes, as if he were remembering how I had sobbed uncontrollably the day I lost my mother."As long as you clear things up, I'll divorce Jess and marry you."But Steve, that was never what I cared about. In despair, I closed my eyes for a moment. Then I stumbled as I pushed him away and spoke to the cameras."Jess's mother was never a mistress. My mother had mental problems and falsely accused Jess and her mother. I'm sorry..."Almost instantly, the internet exploded. My mother and I were nailed to the pillar of shame, and on the anniversary of her death, she was called a "crazy old hag."Steve remained unmoved, while my father, his arm around his mistress, actually looked relieved. At that moment, Jess suddenly shrieked and waved a video on her phone."Alicia, how could you have someone

Every memorial photo and keepsake of my mother's had been swapped out for festive decorations. When I showed up disheveled and unkempt, everyone turned to stare at me strangely."Isn't that the crazy one? How did she get out of the psychiatric hospital?""Her father's getting married, and her sister's having a birthday party. It's a double celebration! Of course she had to come join the fun!" someone said, laughing."Isn't she worried about embarrassing Mr. Machleit? Looks like there's going to be a new Mrs. Machleit."...Dressed in a gorgeous gown, Jess walked over with her arm looped through Steve's."Alicia, you've been through so much. I know you've never liked me or my mother, but we're going to be family from now on, so let's try to get along."On her wrist was the Machleit family heirloom bracelet, which only a rightful Machleit daughter-in-law was entitled to wear.So Steve had given it to her long ago.Jess wore a friendly smile, but her nails dug hard into my arm.
