Chapter 3

Author: Mohini
Every memorial photo and keepsake of my mother's had been swapped out for festive decorations.

When I showed up disheveled and unkempt, everyone turned to stare at me strangely.

"Isn't that the crazy one? How did she get out of the psychiatric hospital?"

"Her father's getting married, and her sister's having a birthday party. It's a double celebration! Of course she had to come join the fun!" someone said, laughing.

"Isn't she worried about embarrassing Mr. Machleit? Looks like there's going to be a new Mrs. Machleit."

...

Dressed in a gorgeous gown, Jess walked over with her arm looped through Steve's.

"Alicia, you've been through so much. I know you've never liked me or my mother, but we're going to be family from now on, so let's try to get along."

On her wrist was the Machleit family heirloom bracelet, which only a rightful Machleit daughter-in-law was entitled to wear.

So Steve had given it to her long ago.

Jess wore a friendly smile, but her nails dug hard into my arm.

I wrenched free in pain. "Congratulations. I'm going to pay my respects to my mother."

"Stop right there!"

I'd barely taken a step when my father roared behind me, "From now on, you are not to mention her in front of these two!"

Steve grabbed my arm, growing impatient. "Today's a happy occasion. I won't let you make a scene."

But today was also the anniversary of my mother's death.

I was determined to go, but in the blink of an eye, a crowd of reporters had me surrounded.

Jess hurried over and dropped to her knees in front of me, tears streaming prettily down her face. "Alicia, I understand you're grieving your late mother, but you can't deny she wasn't mentally stable when she was alive. That's why she deliberately threw herself at my car and insulted me...

"My mother has done nothing but good deeds her whole life, and yet your late mother slandered her as a mistress..."

As she spoke, she deliberately let a psychiatric evaluation certificate fall out of her bag.

My mother's name was written on it.

The guests gasped.

"Who knew both mother and daughter were mentally ill? And they abused Jess and her mother!"

In a few short sentences, the crowd painted my mother and me as vicious bullies.

At the sight of Jess's pitiful, fragile act, Steve's face instantly darkened. "Alicia, I can't believe you teamed up with your mother to bully them since long ago. How could you?"

My father's face flushed red as he jabbed a finger at my nose. "You ungrateful girl!"

Everything in front of me twisted into something grotesque. In a daze, I murmured, "No, my mom was perfectly sane..."

Before I could finish, my weak body collapsed into Steve's arms, and a cruel voice sounded in my ear, "I have the deed to your mother's old home. Alicia, tell the cameras that Jess's mother didn't break up your family. Be a good girl."

His voice was as gentle as it could be, yet so cold that I couldn't stop trembling.

My mother had fought with everything she had to keep that old home so I would have some security after she was gone.

It was also the only thing I had left to remember her by.

I was nearly drained of strength. "You bastard!"

The moment the words left my mouth, a flood of messages spread like a virus to everyone's phones.

Meeting my horrified gaze, Steve confidently stroked my hair. "Which matters more, a dead woman's reputation or her belongings? Think it over."

I'd thought I would never see Steve again. Now that he had shown up, I didn't feel the slightest flutter in my heart.More than anything, I felt disgust."What are you doing here?"At my words, Steve froze, then pressed his lips together. "I know you're upset about that fake marriage certificate. Let's get married right away. Let's go back to the way things were, okay?"I suddenly found it a little funny. Even now, he still thought I was being unreasonable, that I was just mad at him for secretly giving me a fake marriage certificate. He would probably never understand the pain of being betrayed by both my husband and my father.I held back my anger. "I never said I wanted to marry you. Let's just not see each other again. Ever."Steve clearly hadn't expected me to say that. Disbelief was written all over his face. "I only married Jess to keep her calm. I was afraid you'd overthink it, so I never told you. How can you act like this?"Hearing the accusation in his voice, I was

When the fire spread to me, I instinctively escaped through the back door.In that moment, my utterly foolish impulse turned into something else: I was done with Steve and my father for good.I flagged down a taxi with all my strength and got far away from that place so full of disappointment. When I looked at my phone again, I realized Steve and my father both believed I had died in the fire.Grief-stricken as they were, they still refused to give up and posted missing-person notices online. Then, among the flood of posts, a former employee of the psychiatric hospital mentioned me and shared a lot of horrifying photos.[Why are you pretending to care now? I saw with my own eyes how Alicia was electrocuted, drugged, and even beaten. It's a miracle she's still alive!][If I had to guess, that illegitimate daughter of yours, Jess, set it all up. I couldn't stand watching it and couldn't do anything about it, so I quit.]...The replies under the post were full of shock and pity.

"A high probability of what?"With no time left to think, Steve raced frantically back to Alicia's mother's old home. When he saw the familiar belongings strewn across the ground, the blood in his veins ran cold."Her shoes, her bag... These all belong to Alicia."David also rushed over once he heard the news, only to black out and collapse on the spot."Wh-what on earth happened here?"The neighbors all started talking at once."We heard things being smashed in the house earlier. It sounded like Alicia was fighting with someone. Then a huge fire broke out, and we never saw her come out."At this, Steve was on the verge of breaking down. "How could anyone have been here? I didn't send anyone here!"Only then did he notice the porcelain shards nearby, along with the broken memorial photo."Who did this?!"Jess's guilt kicked in at once, and she hurried forward to steer them in the wrong direction. "Who would ever be that bold? Alicia must have staged all this..."Before she

Not far away, thick smoke billowed from the old house as neighbors scattered in every direction."It was fine a minute ago. How did it suddenly catch fire?"Steve turned toward the voice. It was Alicia's mother's old home."It can't be..."With no time to think, he tossed aside the flowers in his hand and rushed toward it.David was completely stunned. After all, he was the one who had just bought the old home, and only to teach Alicia a lesson. But flames raged everywhere, and the fire was far too fierce to get anywhere near.Steve had taken only a single step forward when the smoke choked him so badly he couldn't breathe, and a falling beam nearly crushed him. When the firefighters arrived, his voice was practically trembling. "I heard someone's trapped inside. Please, search carefully."Over and over, he silently prayed that it wasn't Alicia.Knowing her temper, she'd definitely come to stop the sale once she found out her mother's belongings were being auctioned off.But

Tears gushed from my eyes, and I almost laughed out loud. The threatening face of the man in front of me would never again match the Steve I once knew.A trace of helplessness flashed in his eyes, as if he were remembering how I had sobbed uncontrollably the day I lost my mother."As long as you clear things up, I'll divorce Jess and marry you."But Steve, that was never what I cared about. In despair, I closed my eyes for a moment. Then I stumbled as I pushed him away and spoke to the cameras."Jess's mother was never a mistress. My mother had mental problems and falsely accused Jess and her mother. I'm sorry..."Almost instantly, the internet exploded. My mother and I were nailed to the pillar of shame, and on the anniversary of her death, she was called a "crazy old hag."Steve remained unmoved, while my father, his arm around his mistress, actually looked relieved. At that moment, Jess suddenly shrieked and waved a video on her phone."Alicia, how could you have someone
