Chapter 4

Penulis: Thai Ginger
"Mom, why didn't you... why didn't you tell me?"

Mom sighed and reached up to wipe my face. Her hands were rough, and the calluses on her fingertips brushed the skin at the corner of my eye, making it sting a little.

"What was I supposed to tell you? It costs enough just to live in the city. I can't do much to help you, but I don't want to make things harder for you."

"Mom—"

She cut me off. "I'm really fine. Look, the terminal is well lit, and security makes rounds. It's safe here, and there's plenty of room."

I looked at her.

She didn't say she was cold or hungry. She didn't mention spending seven hours on a bus and then half the night on a hard bench at the bus terminal.

All she talked about was how bright, spacious, and safe it was.

Mom had always been like that. No matter how hard things got, she'd only tell me a fraction of it. She kept the rest to herself.

We were poor when I was growing up. Dad died when I was young, so Mom raised me alone.

During the busy farming season, she worked in the fields. When things slowed down, she went into town and took whatever jobs she could find.

But she always made sure I had clean clothes and a hot meal.

When I was in high school, I needed 1,200 dollars for school. Mom didn't have it, so she borrowed money from five different families. By the time she got home, it was already dark.

She was still smiling when she pulled a stack of bills from her pocket. They were mostly fives and tens, and it took her a while to count them all.

When she finished, she looked at me and said, "Justin, I may not be able to give you much, but I'll make sure you finish school."

Years later, I graduated, got a job, and built a life for myself in the city. The first thing I wanted was for Mom to move in with me.

But she refused.

She always had an excuse. The vegetables in her garden needed watering. A neighbor had asked her to watch their kid for a few days. She couldn't get used to the elevators in the city.

But I knew the real reason. She was afraid she'd be a burden to me.

After Deborah moved in, Mom became even more reluctant to come stay with me. She always said she was fine on her own and didn't want to get in the way.

But every month, without fail, she sent 2,000 dollars to my account.

Whenever I told her I didn't need it, she'd say, "Just keep it. A man needs some money in his pocket."

Meanwhile, she was back home in the country, still wearing the same jacket after ten years, even though the collar was frayed.

And Ella's family had the nerve to keep living in a condo Mom had paid for.

What gave them the right?

I clenched my fists. Then I had an idea.

I wasn't about to let Mom spend the night at the bus terminal, so I took her to the nicest hotel nearby. The room cost 880 dollars for the night.

Mom stopped at the door and refused to go in. "Justin, I don't need a room this nice. I can just spend the night at the terminal—"

I cut her off and pulled her inside. "Mom, you spent 800,000 dollars buying me that condo. I can take care of you now. Just let me do something for you for once, okay?"

She looked at me and opened her mouth, but nothing came out.

I helped Mom inside and sat her on the edge of the bed. She sank into the soft mattress, which made her look even smaller.

"Mom, get some rest tonight. We'll deal with everything else tomorrow."

She held my hand, looking worried. "What about you? When you go back home... you're not going to fight with them, are you?"

I shook my head. "No. Don't worry. I won't."

There was no point arguing with a bunch of bastards like them.

Mom looked at me for a moment, then slowly nodded. "Good. As long as you're okay, that's all that matters to me."

I didn't say anything else. I tucked the blanket around her and left the room.

The hallway was quiet. I leaned against the wall for a moment, then pulled out my phone and made a call.

"Hi, I need to sell my condo. I don't care how low you have to price it. I only have one condition."

  • No Room for Mom   Chapter 10

Deborah didn't approve of Ella's new boyfriend and was always taking passive-aggressive digs at him on social media.Whenever I saw them, I just laughed. Some people were bound to end up exactly where they did.Ella would never learn to respect people, and Deborah would never learn to keep her mouth shut. Their lives were only going to get more miserable. As for me, it wasn't until I got out of that mess that I finally felt like myself again. One day, I ran into Kevin at the grocery store. He was pushing a cart through the spice aisle, looking over the shelves by himself. Tina wasn't with him. When he saw me, he paused, then gave me an awkward smile. "Oh, Justin."I gave him a nod and started pushing my cart away."Justin," he called after me.I turned around.Kevin hesitated for a moment. "I'm sorry. I was wrong back then. I should've spoken up when my mom and Ella were treating you that way, but I didn't. I-I've regretted it ever since."I looked at him and thought back to

Ella took the divorce agreement with trembling hands, her face pale. She stared at it for a long time before looking up at me, her eyes red. "Justin, are you really going to be this heartless?"I said nothing."Does our marriage really mean nothing to you anymore?"I laughed, but there was no humor in it. "Our marriage? Did you care about it when you made my mom sleep in the storage room? When you threw the pecan pies she brought me in the trash?"When she ended up curled up at a bus terminal just to save 80 dollars?"Ella had no answer. Finally, I said, "Just sign it. Don't make me think even less of you."The divorce went through faster than I expected.Ella fought me on it for a few days. She had a bunch of relatives try to talk me out of it, then hired a lawyer and tried to go after my assets. But I'd bought the condo outright before we got married. We each kept our own income, and we had no joint assets. She dragged things out for two weeks, but in the end, she didn't g

  • No Room for Mom   Chapter 8

I called a cab and went straight to the train station. I was going home to spend Thanksgiving with Mom.By the time I got home, it was almost dark. As I stepped into the yard, the warm smell of butter and toasted pecans drifted from the house.Mom was sitting at a little table under the pecan tree, shelling pecans for another batch of pies. She had a bowl of unshelled pecans beside her and another full of the ones she'd already shelled. The moment she saw me, the pecans in her hand dropped into the bowl. She stood up and wiped her hands on her apron."Justin? What are you doing home? I thought you said you had to work."I walked over, sat down on the little stool beside her, and picked up a pecan. "I lied. I didn't have to work. I came home to spend Thanksgiving with you."Mom looked at me, her eyes turning red. "But what about Ella—""Mom."I cut her off and looked her straight in the eye. "Ella and I are done."She froze.I told her everything that had happened, from sellin

Ella couldn't answer. Her face went pale, then flushed.Deborah rushed out of the kitchen and stepped in front of her."Stop twisting everything around! Your mother's from the sticks. So what if we put her in the storage room? Our family was doing her a favor by letting her stay here!"I scoffed. "Your family? Who paid for this condo? Did you put a single dollar toward it?"Deborah's face turned red. "H-how dare you talk to me like that? Ella's your wife. What's yours is hers. This condo is marital property!""Let's see if the law agrees."I was done arguing with her. I went into the bedroom and locked the door.Outside, Deborah started screaming, crying, and throwing things around.I put on my headphones and played an old song.On the third day, Ms. Crosby called. "Mr. Hurst, we have a buyer. They made an all-cash offer of two million dollars and can sign today. Can you come in?""I'll be there."I got changed, grabbed the deed and the rest of the paperwork, and headed out.

I smiled.Ella blinked. "What are you smiling about?""Nothing."I stood up and smoothed my shirt. "Fine. I'll apologize."Her expression softened. "That's more like it. We're family. There's no need to stay mad at each other."Family?I walked out of the bedroom. Deborah was sitting on the couch peeling an orange. When she saw me, she scoffed and looked away.I walked over and stopped in front of her. "Deborah, I'm sorry."The words left a bad taste in my mouth. She didn't even look up. "So you finally realize you were wrong?""Yeah. I shouldn't have gotten angry when you drove my mom out. I shouldn't have been upset when Tina ruined the last family photo I had with my dad. And I definitely shouldn't have been so dramatic about any of it."Deborah stopped peeling the orange. She clearly hadn't expected that.Kevin scoffed. "Justin, is that supposed to be an apology? You sound pretty sarcastic.""Then tell me how I'm supposed to apologize without sounding sarcastic."That

Early the next morning, I took Mom to the bus terminal and saw her off. Before she left, she kept reminding me, "Justin, don't fight with Ella. Just get along with her and live your life."I smiled and nodded. "Don't worry, Mom. I know what I'm doing."As soon as the bus pulled away, my smile faded. I called a cab and went straight to the real estate office.Ms. Crosby, the agent, was a sharp woman in her 40s. We'd been in touch before.I put the deed on her desk. "Ms. Crosby, I want to sell my condo."She looked over the paperwork, and her eyes lit up. "This one? It's in a great area with a good school district. It's worth at least 2.2 million dollars right now.""List it at two million dollars. I only have one condition. I need people coming to see it within three days, and I want it sold as soon as possible."Ms. Crosby looked surprised. "You're in that much of a hurry?""Yes."She saw the look on my face and didn't ask any more questions. She turned to her computer and go
