Chapter 2

Author: Drunken Dumpling
Just as I had expected, Nathan never came home for the entire night. Yet, when I turned over and felt the cold on his side of the bed, I still couldn't stop my heart from aching.

A series of rapid knocks sounded at the door, every knock louder than the last.

I went over to answer the door, and Robert Wiley, the butler, simply glared at me with contempt.

"Mrs. Galloway Senior wants you to bring the kid to Galloway Manor."

Marina Boyle, Nathan's grandmother, had never liked me and always looked down on me. No matter how much I explained things to her about my co-parenting arrangement with Nathan, she refused to accept it and simply treated me as a promiscuous prostitute who hated the idea of settling down.

She also looked down on Theo.

And since Nathan's family all treated me with disrespect, naturally, the butler and maids in the household also looked down on Theo and me.

When I arrived at Galloway Manor, I realized that all of the Galloway relatives were also present.

Nathan, who'd disappeared the entire night, was standing there with Catherine in his arms, his eyes gentle as he looked at her with tenderness and care.

Marina smiled so widely whenever she looked at Catherine's stomach that it was almost blinding.

"Catherine is finally pregnant. Since all of our relatives are here today, it is now time for us to fulfil our part of the deal from half a year ago!"

The oldest and most influential member of the Galloway family, Moses Galloway, then stood up and formally declared Nathan as the official heir and new head of the Galloway family.

"Since we now have another little heir coming along, it's time to pick a date for the wedding."

I looked up and realized everyone, including Nathan, was looking at Catherine instead.

He caressed her stomach like there was no one else in the room and said affectionately, "I'm going to be a father…"

He didn't say that he was going to be a father "again"—only that he was becoming one.

I suppressed the bitterness in my heart and tightened my fist.

Theo suddenly whimpered quietly in the silent hall. "Mommy, it hurts."

I hurriedly released his hand from my grasp, noticing that his little hand was now red all over.

"I'm sorry, Teddy. Here, let me blow on it to make it better…"

However, it was precisely Theo's sentence earlier that had everyone in the family suddenly turn their attention toward us, mostly looking at us out of the corner of their eyes.

Moses frowned. "If news of the head of the Galloway family having a child born out of wedlock gets out, the entire family's reputation will be destroyed.

"That kid is nothing but a prostitute's bastard child anyway."

Nathan's mother, Doreen Stanton, scoffed coldly at me and said, "We'll just tell the public that this kid was adopted into the family for charity."

Doreen didn't like me. She didn't like Theo either. Back then, it had been her idea for Nathan to sleep with Catherine and produce an heir before he could inherit the title of the head of the family.

And since Catherine was really pregnant with an heir now, Theo was naturally out of the picture altogether.

Nathan let go of Catherine's hand and said, "Mom, don't you think that's too much?"

He was just about to walk over to me when Catherine silently tugged him back to her.

I witnessed everything with my own eyes. So, I brought Theo over to Doreen and said, "Understood. From today onward, Theo won't be Nathan's son anymore."

I then crouched before Theo and explained to him with red-rimmed eyes, "Teddy, you can't call him 'Daddy' anymore, okay? You can only call him 'Uncle Nate'."

Nathan was stunned. He knew very well that I'd only been able to remain on amicable terms with his family for the past six months largely because of Theo.

He tried listening for any hint of indignation in my voice, but he couldn't.

Theo couldn't understand the gravity of the situation and began to cry. I hurriedly picked him up in my arms to bring him out, but Catherine stopped me.

"Jo, I heard that it's good for pregnant women to wear purple amethysts as it's good for their health. Nathan had been searching everywhere for one for days to no avail, but I just realized that you have one on you!

"Do you think you can give it to me?"

Nathan left that very day, looking like he'd just aged a decade overnight.Theo learned about the incident only after I told him.I asked him, "Would you blame me for not letting you see him one last time, Teddy?"Theo shook his head, the maturity beyond his years suddenly returning to his face."No. Uncle Nate isn't someone who should be a dad. I don't think it's a pity at all."…I soon started another gemstone business in the village, this time with the other elderly ladies.Over the years, quartz stones from us, also known as Melsh quartz, became known for their high quality and honest-to-goodness business ethics, gaining widespread love and popularity among people everywhere. When I heard news about Nathan again, it was on the national news.Apparently, after returning to Ravelton that day, he insisted that he wasn't going to marry Catherine no matter what, and he even underwent a vasectomy in protest. However, that backfired on him, as it only made Catherine's unborn ch

I laughed so hard that I literally doubled over, wheezing. When I finally straightened up, my face was expressionless, and my eyes were icy."You disgust me, Nathan Galloway."Nathan was shocked as he stared at me incredulously."W-What did you just say?""I said that you disgust me to no end!"Nathan immediately lost his temper as he marched toward me. However, the elderly ladies immediately shoved him back, preventing him from getting close to me."I've already apologized to you! What more do you want? You used to always—"He hadn't finished his sentence, but I knew what he was going to say.I walked out of the group of elderly ladies and slapped him hard in the cheek. He stared at me in disbelief again.I chuckled coldly."What did I always use to do? Love you? Forgive you that easily, no matter how terrible a thing you did? Sure, I loved you very much in the past, so much so that I even willingly left Cloudingham to move in with you in the city."I even continued lovin

The smiles on Theo's and my faces immediately disappeared as soon as we heard that Nathan was here. With how powerful and influential the Galloways were, I wasn't that surprised that he managed to find us so quickly.I dusted off the Melsh traditional clothing I was wearing and walked out, heading for the village entrance. Before I'd even reached the entrance, I could hear the mocking voices of the elderly ladies from afar."Wait, you're the man our Annie got engaged to? You don't look the least bit useful at all.""Yeah, exactly! He's not strong or tan, and he certainly isn't worth my second glance!""Really? Well, how many heifers would you pay for a man like him?""What? Heifers? I'm not paying more than a dozen eggs for someone like him, and that's me being extremely generous already!"Nathan's voice was cold and dark as he exclaimed, "How dare you women judge me like that like I'm an object! You're all out of your minds!"I don't want to argue with any of you. Go and tell

Joanne's POVThe passengers on the plane to Cloudingham were buzzing with gossip, saying that Nathan had run away from his wedding, leaving his bride at the altar.Nathan? Run away? But wasn't this the wedding of his dreams?"I heard that Nathan ran away to get back together with his ex-girlfriend!""Isn't his ex-girlfriend Catherine Wilkins? I'd heard a long time ago that they used to be lovers, and Catherine was the one who first abandoned him, making him escape to Cloudingham with a broken heart.""Haven't you been keeping up with his news? He found himself another girlfriend in Cloudingham! I heard that he even had a son with her!"I couldn't help laughing coldly when I heard that. Meanwhile, Theo took off his sleeping mask next to me and asked quietly, "Mommy, are they talking about Uncle Nate?"I put the sleeping mask back on him and said, "No, Teddy. You heard them wrongly. Go to sleep, alright? I will be right here."Theo ended up sleeping until it was time to leave th

Joanne's POVAfter reaching the company, Nathan flopped onto the couch as he scrolled through the chat history with me.Our chat messages in the past six months were few and far between. Most of them were from me, asking him if he'd eaten and if he'd had a good night's sleep. And every time he went into Catherine's room, I would never reply to any of his messages the following day, as if I was venting my anger and frustration at him like this. The number of messages between us got fewer and fewer, and up to one week ago, I'd stopped asking him about his day altogether.Nathan sat up on the couch, feeling bothered as he frowned. The messages from the past week could all fit on the screen. There had only been a total of three. The first two messages were from two days ago, when I asked him if he was going to be attending Theo's birthday party. He suddenly realized that I had indeed reminded him about it, but he forgot about everything right afterward.
