Chapter 3

Author: M. June
Ginetta walked toward me and looked down at my slightly rounded belly.

"Who's the father of your baby? Alessia, Carlo and I will be the ones who are legally married. You're just a desperate wretch who won't leave him alone! Or do you want your child to be an illegitimate bastard from the day they're born?"

My hand on the railing trembled as I stared at Ginetta, unable to believe how cruel she was being.

"I don't want anyone coming between Carlo and me. I think you understand that," she continued. "If you keep hanging around Carlo, I can't promise I won't…"

Before she could finish, Ginetta grabbed my wrist in a tight grip.

"That bracelet is reserved for the wife of the Mandelli family's boss. Why are you wearing it?"

I fought back the pain and looked at the emerald bracelet on my wrist.

Carlo had put it on my wrist three months ago when he proposed to me. He told me I was the love of his life and that we'd never be apart.

But now he was going to marry Ginetta instead, and they already had a child on the way.

"Give me the bracelet! Alessia, just because you stole something doesn't mean it belongs to you!"

With that, she glanced behind me, then fell hard into the flower bed.

"Help! My baby…"

I stared at my hands in shock. I hadn't pushed her!

Suddenly, Carlo came running over and helped Ginetta to her feet. "Ginetta, are you okay?"

"Alessia, why? Why would you do this?" Carlo stared at me in disbelief, his eyes bloodshot.

Ginetta clutched Carlo's clothes, her voice breaking as she cried, "Alessia, why did you push me? Are you trying to kill my baby?"

Carlo looked at me with shock and suspicion, but not an ounce of trust.

He actually believed I could do something like that!

"Carlo, please save our baby!" Ginetta clutched her belly and sobbed softly.

I wanted to explain that I hadn't done it, but when I saw the doubt on Carlo's face, I couldn't get the words out.

"Guards! Lock Alessia in the holding room. No one is to let her out without my orders!"

A stern voice rang out.

It was Carlo's father, Don Pietro Mandelli, the family's boss.

"Papa, Alessia…" Carlo tried to speak up.

"Why are you still defending her?" Pietro roared. "Alessia harmed your child. That's our family's future heir!"

I turned to Carlo without thinking, clinging to the last shred of hope in my heart.

He held Ginetta in his arms and looked at me with pain and reluctance. Then he closed his eyes. When he opened them again, his expression was calm.

"I'll take Ginetta to see a doctor first."

Carlo looked away, then turned and carried Ginetta off.

As I watched him walk away, I suddenly felt foolish.

I had actually believed his lies that he'd always trust me.

Leaving him for good was clearly the best choice for me.

It wasn't until the police came to investigate that I learned Carlo had been the one who shoved me out of the way and saved my life.He had known I was holding a press conference that day, so he'd come to see me. That was when he'd seen Ginetta trying to run me over. He'd pushed me out of the way just in time. The doctors examined me at the hospital and found no physical injuries. But since I had witnessed the crash, I needed some counseling.A few days later, I learned from someone else that after saving me, Carlo had been struck by the car and killed on the spot.Ginetta had also been left paralyzed from the waist down after the car slammed into the wall.Later, I heard from an old friend that Carlo had paid a steep price to take control of the Mandelli family. The first thing he did after securing his position was announce that he would end his marriage to Ginetta.Everyone in the family opposed his decision, but no one could change his mind.In the end, the family insisted

After all this time in the lab, I had gotten better and better at running my experiments.Even Francesca said that at this rate, I could finish the project at least three months ahead of schedule.Just when I thought my life was finally settling down, I saw Carlo standing by the road as I left the building. He held a huge bouquet of red roses and ran straight toward me when he saw me."Alessia, it's been a long time. I'm not trying to force you to come back with me. I just want to win you back!"Carlo looked perfectly at ease, as if we had never argued or had any problems. It was as if this were just another ordinary day, and he'd come to take me home. But I only found him annoying now.I had wanted him to give me roses before, and I had told him so outright. However, he ignored my feelings and failed to understand me at all."What good are flowers? You'd be better off buying a gem at an auction. You always ask for pointless things like these."After that, I never asked him f

"Alessia, I know I was wrong! Papa said I could only marry you after I had an heir. I never would have agreed to this otherwise." Carlo tried to explain, looking frantic."The wedding is just a formality. You're the only woman I've ever considered my wife!"He seemed afraid I wouldn't believe him, so he kept trying to explain. "I kept it from you because I was afraid you'd get upset and hurt. I thought I'd be free once it was all over!"I used my free hand to pry his fingers off my wrist, one by one. "I get it. Carlo, we're over. Don't come looking for me again."Carlo looked frantic. He grabbed my hand and tried to drag me toward a car parked by the road.I never expected him to do something like that. Just as I was about to call for help, a familiar figure appeared."Carlo, today is the banquet where your family will announce my pregnancy. You have to be there!"Ginetta stepped out of another car. She gave me a sharp look before turning her gaze to Carlo. She wore a loose d

After I met Claire, she took me to the research institute where Francesca worked.I expected to be rusty after all these years, but the opposite was true. As soon as I picked up the lab equipment again, I knew this was where I belonged."I'm glad you've decided to come back to work." Francesca stood before me in her white lab coat, smiling warmly. "Alessia, welcome back!"Her gentle smile almost brought me to tears. For a moment, I could hardly believe I was really there. It felt like five years ago all over again. Francesca had urged me to stay in the lab, but I had chosen a very different path for Carlo.Thankfully, I still had the chance to come back.At Francesca's insistence, I took two days off to rest. Two days later, I put on my sterile lab suit and officially returned to the lab.The lab had living quarters, and this research project required us to work in a closed facility with no outside contact. We wouldn't be allowed out for at least two months.Once inside, I dev

As I stood in the Milars airport, I looked at the setting sun casting its light across the ground outside. For the first time, I felt like I had a fresh start. When I checked my phone, I saw dozens of missed calls. There were also countless new messages on my social media apps.I thought Francesca had called about the research project. When I checked, I found that all the calls and messages were from Carlo.[Alessia, where are you? Why aren't you answering my calls?][Ginetta and I are only together because of our families' deal. I've told you that you're the one I love most. Can you please stop this nonsense?][Just answer the phone! You still need to rest and recover!][If you come back now, I'll forgive you for leaving!]As I continued to ignore his messages and calls, he kept texting me, growing more desperate with each message.[Alessia, please come back. Pietro had me locked away in the holding room. It was pitch-black, and the air reeked of blood.I lay on the filthy bed, trying to ease the cramps in my belly. After some time, the door to the holding room suddenly swung open.Ginetta appeared in front of me. "Bring that bitch over here!"Two men grabbed my arms from either side and forced me onto my knees in front of Ginetta."I'm Carlo's wife, and I'm the only one who can have his child. The baby you're carrying is nothing but a bastard!" Ginetta snarled. Then she added, "Actually, I'm not pregnant at all. I just wanted to see if Carlo cared about me and the baby. And you've seen the result for yourself. Men, beat her up!"Ginetta stood a short distance away, directing the men beside her.The next moment, the men began kicking and punching my belly. The pain grew unbearable, and cold sweat broke out across my skin.I felt something leave my body, and the smell of fresh blood filled my nose."No! Please don't hurt my baby!"
