Chapter 2

Author: M. June
That night, a message from Ginetta suddenly popped up on my phone.

It was a digital wedding invitation from her and Carlo. The cover showed their wedding photo. Carlo held her in his arms and kissed her passionately.

I stared at their photo on my phone, unable to sleep until late into the night.

Carlo still hadn't come home.

I couldn't stop thinking about what he was doing and why he was still out so late.

The clock on the wall seemed to move slowly. Every tick made me feel worse.

It wasn't until 2:00 am that the bedroom door finally opened.

In the dim light, I saw Carlo sit down on the edge of the bed. When our eyes met, he seemed surprised to find me still awake.

"Alessia, I didn't know you were waiting for me. I'm sorry I got back so late."

Before I could speak, I noticed the red mark on his neck.

I knew exactly what it meant.

Carlo quickly covered his neck. His voice was filled with guilt.

"Alessia, don't get the wrong idea. Some bug bit me earlier."

My eyes began to sting. I turned away, unwilling to watch him put on such a poor act.

The baby I was carrying was his, too, yet he was going to start a family with someone else behind my back.

Carlo seemed sure I would never leave him, so he never considered how much he might hurt me. He never thought about how I would face everyone after he married Ginetta, either.

With my back facing him, I let my tears soak into the pillow.

We met five years ago at Moretti Private Medical Center. Later, I was hired as his personal doctor.

We fell in love at first sight. To stay with him, I even turned down Francesca's offer to join a research project. All I wanted was to stay by Carlo's side and care for him.

But I learned from Ginetta's messages that someone had betrayed the Mandelli family's arms-smuggling routes, causing heavy losses.

Carlo's father wanted him to marry Ginetta to secure an alliance between their families.

As long as Carlo and Ginetta had a child to become the next heir to the Mandelli family, Ginetta's family would give them their support.

Carlo seemed to notice my tears. He let out a soft sigh.

"Alessia, don't cry. Once the family alliance is settled, we'll have a grand wedding of our own."

To him, a wedding meant to celebrate our love was just an empty promise he could make whenever he wanted.

-

Early the next morning, I went out for a walk and ran straight into Ginetta, who was wearing sunglasses.

She took them off and glared at me.

"Why are you still here, you bitch? Did you come back to seduce Carlo while I was away? You've chased after Carlo for years, and now he's marrying me instead. Do you still think you can be his mistress, you whore?"

She stopped in front of me and studied me with open hostility.

"I didn't…"

I wanted to explain that I wasn't the other woman. Carlo and I had been together for five years.

But before I could finish, Ginetta cut me off.

She gave me a scornful look. "I'm pregnant. The baby's Carlo's."

The words I had wanted to say caught in my throat. I stumbled back a step and nearly fell.

For a moment, I couldn't tell whether the pain was in my stomach or in my chest.

Ginetta's words hit me harder than I could bear.

At that moment, I realized I should give up on Carlo for good.

It wasn't until the police came to investigate that I learned Carlo had been the one who shoved me out of the way and saved my life.He had known I was holding a press conference that day, so he'd come to see me. That was when he'd seen Ginetta trying to run me over. He'd pushed me out of the way just in time. The doctors examined me at the hospital and found no physical injuries. But since I had witnessed the crash, I needed some counseling.A few days later, I learned from someone else that after saving me, Carlo had been struck by the car and killed on the spot.Ginetta had also been left paralyzed from the waist down after the car slammed into the wall.Later, I heard from an old friend that Carlo had paid a steep price to take control of the Mandelli family. The first thing he did after securing his position was announce that he would end his marriage to Ginetta.Everyone in the family opposed his decision, but no one could change his mind.In the end, the family insisted

After all this time in the lab, I had gotten better and better at running my experiments.Even Francesca said that at this rate, I could finish the project at least three months ahead of schedule.Just when I thought my life was finally settling down, I saw Carlo standing by the road as I left the building. He held a huge bouquet of red roses and ran straight toward me when he saw me."Alessia, it's been a long time. I'm not trying to force you to come back with me. I just want to win you back!"Carlo looked perfectly at ease, as if we had never argued or had any problems. It was as if this were just another ordinary day, and he'd come to take me home. But I only found him annoying now.I had wanted him to give me roses before, and I had told him so outright. However, he ignored my feelings and failed to understand me at all."What good are flowers? You'd be better off buying a gem at an auction. You always ask for pointless things like these."After that, I never asked him f

"Alessia, I know I was wrong! Papa said I could only marry you after I had an heir. I never would have agreed to this otherwise." Carlo tried to explain, looking frantic."The wedding is just a formality. You're the only woman I've ever considered my wife!"He seemed afraid I wouldn't believe him, so he kept trying to explain. "I kept it from you because I was afraid you'd get upset and hurt. I thought I'd be free once it was all over!"I used my free hand to pry his fingers off my wrist, one by one. "I get it. Carlo, we're over. Don't come looking for me again."Carlo looked frantic. He grabbed my hand and tried to drag me toward a car parked by the road.I never expected him to do something like that. Just as I was about to call for help, a familiar figure appeared."Carlo, today is the banquet where your family will announce my pregnancy. You have to be there!"Ginetta stepped out of another car. She gave me a sharp look before turning her gaze to Carlo. She wore a loose d

After I met Claire, she took me to the research institute where Francesca worked.I expected to be rusty after all these years, but the opposite was true. As soon as I picked up the lab equipment again, I knew this was where I belonged."I'm glad you've decided to come back to work." Francesca stood before me in her white lab coat, smiling warmly. "Alessia, welcome back!"Her gentle smile almost brought me to tears. For a moment, I could hardly believe I was really there. It felt like five years ago all over again. Francesca had urged me to stay in the lab, but I had chosen a very different path for Carlo.Thankfully, I still had the chance to come back.At Francesca's insistence, I took two days off to rest. Two days later, I put on my sterile lab suit and officially returned to the lab.The lab had living quarters, and this research project required us to work in a closed facility with no outside contact. We wouldn't be allowed out for at least two months.Once inside, I dev

As I stood in the Milars airport, I looked at the setting sun casting its light across the ground outside. For the first time, I felt like I had a fresh start. When I checked my phone, I saw dozens of missed calls. There were also countless new messages on my social media apps.I thought Francesca had called about the research project. When I checked, I found that all the calls and messages were from Carlo.[Alessia, where are you? Why aren't you answering my calls?][Ginetta and I are only together because of our families' deal. I've told you that you're the one I love most. Can you please stop this nonsense?][Just answer the phone! Pietro had me locked away in the holding room. It was pitch-black, and the air reeked of blood.I lay on the filthy bed, trying to ease the cramps in my belly. After some time, the door to the holding room suddenly swung open.Ginetta appeared in front of me. "Bring that bitch over here!"Two men grabbed my arms from either side and forced me onto my knees in front of Ginetta."I'm Carlo's wife, and I'm the only one who can have his child. The baby you're carrying is nothing but a bastard!" Ginetta snarled. Then she added, "Actually, I'm not pregnant at all. I just wanted to see if Carlo cared about me and the baby. And you've seen the result for yourself. Men, beat her up!"Ginetta stood a short distance away, directing the men beside her.The next moment, the men began kicking and punching my belly. The pain grew unbearable, and cold sweat broke out across my skin.I felt something leave my body, and the smell of fresh blood filled my nose."No! Please don't hurt my baby!"
