Celeste’s POV

“Thank you, Molly.” I blinked back tears and smiled at her. “Your parents are very lucky to have you as a daughter. You’re an angel.”

I wanted to scream.

My daughter couldn’t be lucky, could she? She hated my freaking guts.

But Molly looked up at me like she wholly believed what she’d said, and I hoped she was right. Hoped my daughter would come back to me.

“But they don’t have time for me.” Her voice was so small.

I tilted her chin up.

“Hey, they love you, honey.” I smiled warmly. “But if you’re ever bored or lonely, you’re welcome to visit me.”

Molly nodded, sniffling.

I crouched down and wrapped my arms around her. She squeezed me so tight that I felt comforted and wondered which of us needed the hug more.

We were smiling by the time we released each other.

Ryan crouched down, booping her nose. “Mols, the bathroom is through that door. You can go look at your hair in the mirror.”

He pursed his lips as she ambled away. “Her parents are extremely busy at work and seldo

Damien’s POV“Did you just say Rosemary will be there?” I breathed into my phone, bewildered.“Yes, sir. She’s a special guest at Celine Mars’ party tomorrow night.” Miss Wilson responded. “She’s planning to introduce her to her most influential friends.”I’d finally caught a break. If I attended that party, I’d be able to speak to that pain in the ass secretive designer and save my company. But if I didn’t, Rosemary would sign with one of Celine’s wealthy guests.“I need an invitation to that party. Make it happen.” I ended the call and tossed my phone onto the sofa.“Sorry, Bon-Bon.” I ruffled her hair. “Daddy had to take that call, but I’m all yours now.”She shrugged, nibbling a fry. “It’s okay, Daddy. I know you always have to work.”With my company nearing a state of collapse, I’d been too busy to spend any time with her. She seemed withdrawn, so I left work early.“How’s your burger?” I asked, taking a bite of my own.I’d bought an array of junk food–I wasn’t sure which was Bo

Celeste’s POVLight from countless flashing cameras burned my retinas as I stepped out of the cab. They were upon us before Grace could even close the door.Celine Mars’ private party seemed more like the event of the century. We linked arms and pushed through the reporters as they swarmed us, asking questions faster than I could listen. But one made me stumble over my own feet.“Are either of you the mysterious designer, Rosemary?”Grace steadied me and kept walking until we joined the flowing line of runway ready guests entering the mansion. We wore simple yet bold cocktail dresses. I noticed several appreciative glances thrown our way. “How did they know I’d be here?” I whispered. She surveyed the reporters being held back by security and shook her head in amazement.“With this crowd, nothing stays private for long.”I swallowed, steadying my nerves. At the massive doors, a lady asked for our names, eyes scanning a tablet.“Rosemary.” I said, voice even despite my nerves. She stopp

Celeste’s POV“Let go of me, you caveman.” I hissed, yanking my arm free from Damien’s grasp.Only he would have the nerve to insinuate I snuck into this lavish event to seduce Celine’s husband. It took a special cocktail of delusion, arrogance, and crazy.“Frankly, you pathetically trying to cozy up to the elite doesn’t surprise me.” Damien said coldly. “No, it’s the fact that a worthless housewife made it through the front doors that I find astounding. You don’t belong here, Celeste.” He stalked towards me, and I backed away.“But I’m more than happy to rectify that mistake.” His lips curled into a twisted smile. Then Brian stepped in front of me, his tall frame towering over Damien. “That is no way to treat a lady, never mind one of Celine’s honored guests.” The powerful man glowered. “Show some respect to Ms. Rosemary.”Damien froze where he stood, stupefied.“You mean to say that the woman behind you is the rising designer, Rosemary?” He furrowed his eyebrows, incredulous. “No o

Celeste’s POV“If money won’t persuade you, how about the chance to have me all to yourself?” Damien spread his arms wide like he was offering me the universe. “Gee, let me think about that.” I tapped my chin. “I’d rather stick needles in my eyes.”His bravado dropped a notch.“I’ll cut ties with Vanessa.” He said tenderly, hand reaching for mine. “We can be a happy family again, Celeste–just the three of us.”“I didn’t realize your company was in such jeopardy that you’re willing to sell yourself to work with Rosemary.”I stepped out of his reach and sipped my champagne–smirking while he frowned.“Imperial Aurum is doing better than ever.” Damien said, feathers bristled. I placed a hand over my mouth, chuckling. “Whatever you need to tell yourself to show your face in public.”“I’m giving you an opportunity to expand your business and get out of the minor leagues, Celeste. Think wisely before you throw it away.” He spoke through gritted teeth.I gave him a blasé shrug. “Why would I

Celeste’s POV“I’m not an idiot.” Vanessa glowered at Damien. “This dull housewife is not Rosemary.”He cocked an eyebrow. “Why would I lie?”Her eyes flashed with rage as she studied the two of us.“You’re making up this crap, so you have an excuse to cozy up to Celeste, aren’t you?” She planted her hands on her hips, pregnant belly jutting out as she glared at us.“For god’s sake, be rational Vanessa.” He said, exasperated. “How else would Celeste even get into a party like this?”She thought for a moment, then her mouth scrunched into a frown.“That doesn’t mean you have to do business with her!” She stamped her foot like a petulant toddler. “Rosemary is just some over hyped nobody whose jewelry and reputation are fake.”That was the final straw. My temper had hit the tall roof of Celine’s opulent hall. “You’re such a hypocrite.” I strode up to her, voice deathly low. “I worked damn hard for everything that I’ve accomplished. Unlike you, I have work-ethic.”She balked at my outrage

Celeste’s POV“You’re a lame, toxic mom! Don’t try to ruin our happy family!” Bonnie screeched. Her face scrunched into a hostile scowl that stabbed daggers at my heart.A lame, toxic housewife? I somehow doubted those concepts were in my preschooler’s curriculum.“That’s right, sweetie. Tell the bad woman to stop trying to tear our family apart.” Vanessa said. She stroked Bonnie’s hair like a heartless puppeteer.“All this time, you’ve been poisoning Bonnie’s mind against me, haven’t you?” I asked through clenched teeth. “How could you so blatantly manipulate her to damage our relationship?”She batted her doe eyes. “Little old me? The fact that you would even suspect me of something like that is appalling, Celeste.”I had my suspicions, but the satisfied smirk that cut her face confirmed them.“Vanessa, how could you be so cruel?” I asked, voice strained as I held back the heartache of yet another betrayal. “A child doesn’t come up with such complex ideas on their own.” She shrugged

Celeste’s POV“That’s enough, Bonnie.” Damien scolded. “Don’t speak to your mother that way.”She stubbornly stuck her chin out.“I’m only treating her the way Daddy does.” She said herself righteously. Bonnie hadn’t just been influenced by Vanessa. She watched Damien treat me like I was a useless housemaid for five years and learned how to be ungrateful and cruel.“Can you finally see why I begged you to stop belittling me in front of our daughter all those years? Because a five-year-old does.” I said, voice tense. He gazed down at his princess like he’d been doused in a bucket of ice water.“I’m not your daughter!” Bonnie spat angrily and stood beside Vanessa. “I want Auntie Vanessa to be my mom. Even Daddy thinks she’s a better mom than you.”“Oh, sweetie! I’d love it if you called me Mommy.” Vanessa squealed gleefully.Every fiber of my being wanted to crawl into a hole and disappear. When she recovered, she squatted down to her level.“Bonnie, your real Mommy is a good person who loves you more than anything in the world. Chasing her away is a big mistake.”The girl huffed. “No, she’s not! She’s boring and strict and never gives me what I want.”“Candy is yummy until your teeth rot. Takeout is great until you’re in the hospital with food poisoning.” Grace smiled gently, but her tone was firm. “Has Mommy ever forgotten you at school or made you sick? Think about it, love.” Bonnie’s light brows furrowed as she considered her words. A wisp of hope unfurled in my chest. What if she could get through to her and I wouldn’t be forced to turn my

Damien’s POV“Hey, Bon-Bon, did you miss Daddy?” I asked my daughter tenderly. But my attention was on the quiet couple. How dare they dine as a happy family where my business associates could see them? Bonnie nodded in response to my question, picking at her vegetables with an air of disinterest that rubbed me up the wrong way. Was Celeste’s plan to make our daughter forget me? Over my dead body.“Daddy missed you so much.” I cooed, taking the empty seat beside Ryan. “Mommy must have brought you here, hoping you’d run into me.”Bonnie shook her head. “Uncle Ryan is treating us to dinner.”I glared at the composed man next to me. “Is the plan to plant a roach in your food so you can have a taste of the life you can’t afford?”“For god’s sake, Damien.” Celeste lowered her voice, but it was still biting. “You are disturbing what was a lovely meal.”“I just want to see my daughter.” I said reasonably and leaned into my backrest.Anger flashed across her face, and my lips twitched into a

He leaned over as he did his niece’s buckle, whispering something I couldn’t make out. When closed the door, he turned to Mr. Edwards.“You should go, father.” He said, coming around to stand beside me. The older man gave a friendly nod, then started the engine and the luxury black car rolled away.Ryan’s cheeks were flushed when I turned to him.“What’s the rush? The moment I was out of sight, I made a beeline for the entrance and slipped out the front door. The back window rolled down, and my father regarded my approach coolly.“How courteous of you to come out and greet me, Ryan.” He said in that calm and collected tone of his that meant he was fuming beneath the surface.Whatever I’d done this time, I couldn’t have this discussion outside Celeste’s studio.“Father, you need to leave immediately.” I said, glancing over my shoulder. “You agreed to keep our relationship a secret.”Maximilian’s eyes narrowed. “What am I supposed to do when you make me jump through hoops to see my granddaughter? I’ll escort her to her piano lesson since you’ve been too busy fooling around to visit.”“I’m working, father.” I couldn’t keep the urgency from my voice. “We’ll visit you soon, so please leave for now.” Whatever storm was brewing, unleashed.“You’re worki

Does he play with you or pick you up from school?”Bonnie tensed, her voice becoming small. “Daddy’s busy.”My heart ached for this lonely girl. Damien had showered he

Celeste’s POV“Oh, my god Celeste!” Grace squealed, running over to me. “You need to see what’s on the third page of the Citrine.”I put down the design I’d been tweaking, curiosity piqued.“What is it?” I asked, taking the magazine.I blinked at a photograph in shock. A broad-backed gentleman was helping a woman wearing a deep maroon dress into a sports car. Thankfully, I’d turned my face away from the camera as I ducked in, but anyone who knew me would recognize that I was that woman.Grace tapped the headline, and my mouth fell open.“Spotted: Crown Luxe’s heir helps hot date into his tailor made Bugatti at Mars party.” I read the words, shell-shocked.“I read the article.” Grace said, leaning against my desk. “There’s only one car like that in the world, and it belongs to Maximilian’s son. How in the world was your assistant chauffeuring you around in it?”I shook my head. “He borrowed it from his college roommate.”“He went to college with Crown Lux’s heir! Are they close?” She a

Vanessa’s POV“Don’t even think about taking my car!” Damien bellowed from the top of the stairs.I furiously threw open the front door and clutched my purse. “Oh, you mean that piece of junk in the driveway?” I screamed back. “I’d rather walk to the mall at four fucking months pregnant, you unchivalrous asshole!”The door slammed behind me with a resounding thud.I stormed down the driveway, groaning in fury and frustration. That obsessive man had kept me up half the night arguing about Bonnie and his lameass car. If I saw his face for a second longer, I’d claw his eyes out.I smirked as I strutted past the cracked headlight and the scratched paint of Damien’s car. It felt good to put that self righteous bitch in her place yesterday. Out of sight of the house, I slowed to a stroll–there wasn’t a chance in hell I’d walk so far in my limited edition Jimmy Choo’s. I dug through my purse for my phone to call a cab and smiled when I saw the fat envelope beside it.Yesterday, I pawed off

Bonnie’s brows scrunched together, and she asked, “Mommy, are you two dating?”I cleared my throat as I cleaned myself, mind frazzled. What was I supposed to tell her? We’d slept together, and I trusted him more than anyone, but we were nothing more than good friends?God, I’d made everything a complicated disaster with my failing self control. The silence stretched uncomfortably. Just as I opened my mouth to speak, my phone blared from my handbag and I scrambled for it.I’d never been more grateful.“Yes, hello?” I answered, walking a few steps away for privacy.“Celeste, are you out of your mind?” Damien’s panicked voice came through. “How could you kidnap Bonnie from school?!”I cursed myself for not checking the caller ID.“When are you going to learn not to take Vanessa at her word?” I hissed. “She dro

I kept glancing at the rearview mirror for reassurance that this was real and my daughter was, in fact, sitting in my backseat.Molly gazed at the cars out of the window, content. But Bonnie was consumed with picking at her nails, chewing on the cuticles and leaving her nail beds a torn mess. For someone who spent exuberant amounts of time and money on manicuring her nails, Vanessa had done a poor job of correcting this bad habit.“Hey girls, who wants to listen to some music?” I asked with a smile, hoping to distract Bonnie.Molly bounced in her seat. “Yes, please Auntie Celeste!”My smile faltered as Bonnie shrugged and looked away. At a red traffic light, I quickly found one of her favorite songs and hit play.“Yay!
