Ryan’s POV

“Uncle Ry-Ry and Auntie Celeste, sitting in a tree, K-I-S-S-I-N-G.” Molly sang breathlessly as I chased her around the coffee table. “First comes love, then comes marriage, then comes baby in a–”

I caught her from behind, swinging her into the air and tickling her mercilessly. My niece squirmed as her adorable giggles filled the living room.

“Promise me you won’t breathe a word of this to Auntie Celeste or Bonnie.” I said, sitting on the sofa so I could add another hand to my tickle attack.

Molly nodded vigorously. “I promise! Please let me go Uncle–”

“You’re fooling around instead of finding me to continue our discussion!” a grave voice thundered over us. “Very well. I’ll deal with matters swiftly so you can get back to your important business.”

Molly climbed off my lap, face pale as she sensed the tension in the room, and stood beside her mother. My empty hands clenched into knuckle-white fists as my gaze met my father’s.

He tossed a business card into my lap.

Ryan’s POVI shrugged off my coat, shoulders stiff from the strain it took not to hit Damien throughout dinner, and handed it to my father’s butler at the front door. With each step towards the living room, the knot in my stomach tightened.I’d kept my father waiting long enough–it was time to bite the bullet.“Uncle Ry-Ry!” Molly jumped off the sofa to barrel into me.My eyes scanned the room as I ruffled her hair. A cartoon played in the background, Molly’s coloring book was on the coffee table, and the perfectly fluffed throw cushion on my father’s favorite armchair was untouched.“Mols, where’s grandpa?” I asked when she released my legs.“In his study.” She pointed down the hall, then scrunched her brows in confusion. “Why did you lie to Auntie Celeste that the driver was grandpa?”In my apprehension about my father’s anger, I’d forgotten about that near slip. I smiled as I spoke. “That wasn’t a lie, it was a game, silly.”“A game?” she asked innocently.“We were playing make-bel

Vanessa’s POVI gasped when Damien walked through the front door, his white dress shirt stained with patches of blue, pink, and orange. His frown lines had never been so deep.Karma was catching up to the selfish bastard, and I reveled in it.“Oh no, what on earth happened to your clothes?” I asked, feigning concern as I passed him a glass of room temperature water.Damien gulped it down angrily, handing the empty glass back to me.“Celeste.” he grumbled.Oh, so the slut you were cozying up to at Celine’s party is a pain in your ass? I wanted to rub it in, but I needed to wait until my schemes made Damien’s credit cards obsolete.I cooed as I undid his tie. “I’m so sorry, babe. Tell me what that bitch did.”“She brought her boyfriend and Bonnie for dinner where I was concluding a business meeting. They insulted and embarrassed me–I can’t show my face at that establishment again.” He said bitterly. “On top of that, her gigolo is manipulating Bonnie against me.”“The audacity?” I exclai

Celeste’s POV“Oh, Celeste.” Damien simpered with condescension. “That you think you stand a chance against me in a custody battle is adorable, but hopelessly misguided.”I gritted my teeth, refusing to back down.“I’ve worked tirelessly to build a career and gain enough wealth to fight for my daughter.” I raised a mocking eyebrow. “Are you discouraging me because you’re afraid I’ll win, Damien?”He sneered with self importance. “Don’t let your five seconds of limelight deceive you. Rosemary is just a fad soon to be forgotten, unlike my company that has stood the test of time.”“If my success is temporary, why are you so desperate to sign with me?” I asked, smirking.Damien glared. “Don’t mistake my charitable offers for need. I can easily afford to pay the exuberant tuition of Bonnie’s prestigious preschool. Can your meager earnings offer our daughter the same?”“Are you sure you can afford her tuition with the mounting lawsuits against your company?” He froze at my question. The col

Celeste’s POV“Bonnie and I are not your possessions, Damien.” I hissed.“Once mine, always mine.” He shrugged with a self assured air. “A signed piece of paper doesn’t change it, nor does the fact that your gigolo is playing family.”Bonnie’s lip quivered, and it kept my anger in check. I fumed silently as Ryan turned to my ex husband with all the poise and sensibility the other man lacked.“I have no ill intentions.” He spoke calmly. “I simply want to be there for this little girl who needs love.”Damien broke into mocking laughter.“You want to be there for her?” He sneered. “What can a pauper without power, finances, or influential connections offer my daughter that I can’t? You’re unqualified to compete with me.”“Are you seriously complaining that Ryan’s picking up your slack?” I said in disbelief.Damien studied me for a moment before clasping my hand on the table and gazing deeply into my eyes. “Marry me, Celeste.” He said, squeezing my hand. “We’ll have the wedding ceremony o

Damien’s POV“Hey, Bon-Bon, did you miss Daddy?” I asked my daughter tenderly. But my attention was on the quiet couple. How dare they dine as a happy family where my business associates could see them? Bonnie nodded in response to my question, picking at her vegetables with an air of disinterest that rubbed me up the wrong way. Was Celeste’s plan to make our daughter forget me? Over my dead body.“Daddy missed you so much.” I cooed, taking the empty seat beside Ryan. “Mommy must have brought you here, hoping you’d run into me.”Bonnie shook her head. “Uncle Ryan is treating us to dinner.”I glared at the composed man next to me. “Is the plan to plant a roach in your food so you can have a taste of the life you can’t afford?”“For god’s sake, Damien.” Celeste lowered her voice, but it was still biting. “You are disturbing what was a lovely meal.”“I just want to see my daughter.” I said reasonably and leaned into my backrest.Anger flashed across her face, and my lips twitched into a

Celeste’s POV“That’s not my gra–” Molly started. But a second later, Ryan had swiftly picked her up and tossed her over his shoulder. Her legs kicked in the air as she erupted into a fit of girlish giggles. “Uncle Ry-Ry! I wanna say goodbye!” She squealed.I watched in astonishment as he carried Molly to the other side of the car.He shifted her weight to open the door. “Sorry, Mols. You’re going to be late for your piano lesson.”“But piano is only in–” Ryan hauled her off his shoulder and carefully placed her in the backseat. He leaned over as he did his niece’s buckle, whispering something I couldn’t make out. When closed the door, he turned to Mr. Edwards.“You should go, father.” He said, coming around to stand beside me. The older man gave a friendly nod, then started the engine and the luxury black car rolled away.Ryan’s cheeks were flushed when I turned to him.“What’s the rush? You could have let her say goodbye.” I said, a brow raised sharply.Bonnie grumbled from behind

Ryan’s POVI left the ladies chatting jovially over fruit with the excuse of needing the restroom. The moment I was out of sight, I made a beeline for the entrance and slipped out the front door. The back window rolled down, and my father regarded my approach coolly.“How courteous of you to come out and greet me, Ryan.” He said in that calm and collected tone of his that meant he was fuming beneath the surface.Whatever I’d done this time, I couldn’t have this discussion outside Celeste’s studio.“Father, you need to leave immediately.” I said, glancing over my shoulder. “You agreed to keep our relationship a secret.”Maximilian’s eyes narrowed. “What am I supposed to do when you make me jump through hoops to see my granddaughter? I’ll escort her to her piano lesson since you’ve been too busy fooling around to visit.”“I’m working, father.” I couldn’t keep the urgency from my voice. “We’ll visit you soon, so please leave for now.” Whatever storm was brewing, unleashed.“You’re worki

Ryan’s POVI stepped aside, watching Celeste crouch in front of her daughter with a sense of awe–she was in her element.“Honey,” she said gently. “Are you upset because Uncle Ryan’s gift only has twelve colors, or because he fetched you from school today instead of Mommy?”Tears sprung to Bonnie’s eyes, but she looked away stubbornly.“Were you disappointed Mommy didn’t come?” She asked again, stroking the girl’s arm.Bonnie grumbled. “No, that gift is ugly and cheap.”“It certainly isn’t as sparkly as that diamond bear necklace Daddy got you, is it?” Celeste said, gesturing to the necklace her daughter had been fiddling with. The girl clasped her hands in front of her and gave one firm nod.“I wonder…” Celeste tapped her chin thoughtfully. “Daddy has given you so many pretty gifts, but does he ever spend time with you? Does he play with you or pick you up from school?”Bonnie tensed, her voice becoming small. “Daddy’s busy.”My heart ached for this lonely girl. Damien had showered he
