Chapter 8

Chapter Eight

Five years later, the Astor Grand Hotel buzzed with energy as business elites mingled in the ballroom. Nikolai Ashford adjusted his tie, surveying the crowd with practiced indifference, networking events like thus6 had become routine to him, it was just another opportunity to display the Ashford empire's continued dominance in the industry.

"Stop fidgeting," Cassandra murmured, sliding her hand into the crook of his arm. "You look perfect." She told herself.

Nikolai gave her a tight smile, five years of being together with Cassandra had been... functional, at the very least she played her role well: the devoted wife, the elegant hostess, the perfect business partner and yet the emptiness remained all through it all.

"There's Jonathan," Nikolai said, nodding toward their host. "Let's get this over with."

Jonathan Hayes beamed as they approached, “it's the man of the hour! Nikolai, Cassandra, so glad you could make it."

"Wouldn't miss it," Cassandra replied wi

CHAPTER 7Nikolai glanced at his watch as he stepped out of the elevator, it was past midnight. Another endless day of meetings and negotiations, he was tired to the bones and the penthouse was feeling too quiet as he shrugged off his coat."Cassandra?" he called, loosening his tie, feeling like a dog whose chains had been undone. A muffled sob broke the silence, Nikolai frowned as he followed the sound to the living room, he stopped at the doorway feeling cold. Cassandra was sat on the couch, blood dripping out of her lips that had been split. Her designer blouse was torn at the shoulder, mascara streaking down her cheeks in wavy lines. "What happened?" Nikolai demanded, crossing to her in three long strides."Elena," Cassandra whispered, wincing as she touched her lip, “she went crazy earlier, Nikolai I've never seen anyone so... unhinged."Nikolai's jaw tightened. "Where is she now?""Gone, she packed her bags and left,” cassandra grabbed his arm, “she kept on saying things, Ni

Chapter 6 Thousands of miles away, Nikolai sat in a conference room, half-listening to his team's presentation. His mind kept drifting to Elena, to the accusations he'd hurled at her the night before. Had he overreacted? The pain in her eyes haunted him, though he'd never admit it aloud. His phone vibrated in his pocket. Irritated by the interruption, he pulled it out, ready to silence it—until he saw Elena's name on the screen. A message with attachments.Curiosity overcame his annoyance. He opened the message, and his blood turned to ice.The photos showed Elena, clearly unconscious, lying in their bed with a half-naked man beside her. In one image, the man's arm was draped possessively across her body. In another, their faces were close together, as if in an intimate moment.Beneath the photos was a message: "You were right. I'm sorry you had to find out this way."The room around Nikolai ceased to exist. The presentation, his team, the deals worth millions—all faded to insignific

CHAPTER 5"Who is the father of the child?" Nikolai's voice dropped to a deadly whisper. "Is it that man you've been visiting?"Elena's heart stopped. How could he know? Her hand instinctively flew to her stomach, a gesture that didn't escape Nikolai's sharp eyes."So it's true," he hissed, his face transforming with rage. He stepped toward her, fists clenched. "You've been carrying another man's child under my roof?"Without thinking, Elena lunged for the door, slamming it shut just as Nikolai reached for her. The lock clicked into place a split second before his body crashed against the wood."Elena!" His fist pounded against the door, the solid oak trembling with each blow. "Open this door immediately!"She backed away, tears streaming down her face, her breathing ragged and shallow. The doctor's warning echoed in her mind—high stress, dangerous for the baby."Elena!" Nikolai roared again. "You will open this door and explain yourself!"She slid down against the far wall, wrapping

Chapter 4The sound of the front door slamming could be heard across the large entrance hall as Nikolai rushed into the house, Cassandra following closely. His face was set in sharp lines, his mouth closed tightly enough to split stone."I've called everyone—her friends, the stores she visits, even that charity where she volunteers," Nikolai said, throwing his phone on the marble counter. "Everyone has not seen her." Arm crossed, Matteo leaned against the doorframe and watched his pal pace like a trapped beast. You have to cool off. She most likely lost track of time and is merely shopping. "For six hours?!" Nikolai shot him a gaze that would cause weaker men to hide. "Women," Matteo said, a tiny smile flickering at his lips. He shrugged. "You know how they are when they are perusing those designer stores." Her cards are still here, Nikolai said, his voice lowering. "Her phone is on the counter. Dramatically sighing, Cassandra settled on the fluffy sofa. She crossed her leg

Chapter 3Nikolai's eyes cut right through me, cold as ice. "In your words, wife." The way he said 'wife' made my skin crawl. "Tell me who's been touching you.""No one," I whispered. My voice shook so bad I could barely get the words out. "Only you.""That's right." His smirk made my stomach turn. "And that's all I ever want to hear."Then Ella – that snake – couldn't help herself. "Then whose child is this?" She covered her mouth like she didn't mean to say it, but I saw that gleam in her eyes. She knew exactly what she was doing.Nikolai moved so fast I didn't see it coming. His fingers dug into my face, holding me like I might break. His breath hit my ear, making me shiver."If I find out you're carrying another man's bastard," he hissed, "I'll kill you both."My heart stopped. How could I tell him now? How could I make him believe this was his baby when he already thought I was a liar?He shoved me away and grabbed his things. The door slammed behind him, and I could finally brea

Chapter 2The stairs swayed under my feet as I rushed down to make breakfast. My stomach lurched – morning sickness or fear, I couldn't tell anymore. I gripped the railing, waiting for the world to stop spinning."Not now, baby," I whispered, touching my belly. Still flat, still our secret. "Mama needs to focus."The kitchen staff ignored me as usual. Just empty faces, trained by Nikolai to treat me like I didn't exist. I grabbed eggs from the fridge, trying to steady my shaking hands. The coffee machine hummed to life, filling the kitchen with its rich scent. Then hands grabbed my waist."Mmm, you smell good, Sister-in-law."Reed's breath hit my neck, hot and wrong. I shoved him away, knocking over the pan. Hot oil splashed my arm."Don't touch me!" The burn stung, but his touch was worse. He laughed, moving closer. "So feisty today. What's wrong, Elena? My brother not taking care of you?" His eyes were hungry, predatory. "I could show you what a real man feels like.""Back off!" I g

Chapter 1I collapsed into bed at midnight, my body sinking into the mattress like a stone dropping into water. I hadn't even changed the moonlight-painted silver stripes across my uniform. The kitchen's spicy smell clung to my hair, mixing with sweat. My head spun from another day of fighting waves of nausea. The soft tick of the clock lulled me towards sleep. Just five minutes of peace. That's all I wanted. Then his weight crushed me awake. My heart slammed against my ribs as those ice-blue eyes found mine in the dark. Nikolai. My husband. My tormentor."Why aren't you ready for me?" His voice cut through the darkness, sharp as a blade. His hands gripped my hips, fingers digging into soft flesh. "How often do I have to tell you about the rules?""I'm sorry," I whispered, my throat tight. "I was sick again today, and work was—""Excuses." He ripped away my underwear, the fabric tearing. "You smell like a kitchen maid. Disgusting."I bit my lip until I tasted blood, fighting back tear
