Cassian's POV

I watched as the black veins moving so quickly in life, even swarming up Lyra’s arm like they were alive, had spread and expanded across my mother’s cold, satisfied face.

"You must be lying," I gasped, not wanting to but hoping You are bluffing about the extent.

But her wicked little smile let me know she wasn’t really lying.

This was happening and it was entirely real. Lyra was dying before our very eyes, consumed from the inside by a poison meant to kill what made her different.

Cassian's POVI’d noticed Kira being captured via Elara, deeply and painfully and intimately, which was one of the reasons I hated her tag-along so much: she still talked through matings; they were a part of our lives that never stopped. She took a sudden breath and clutched my arm with agonizing desperate strength that would leave bruises.“Something is wrong,” she said in an urgent voice. Her face had gone pale. "Something horrible happened at the Goddess Circle. One of them is in agony. I can sense it bleeding through our bond somehow.”I immediately called up every force available to conduct a rescue operation. But the situation was far more complicated than a simple extraction mission. The Goddess Circle was splitting catastrophically in real time over how to respond to this crisis. Some members were completely disabled from experiencing Kira's torture firsthand through the telepathic link. Curled up on the floor, incapacitated. Others were bickering frantically and passionately

Lyra's POVThree days later, I was still desperately grappling with adjustments to being subsumed in a collective divine consciousness. The change had seemed miraculous and radical in the moment. Now it was feeling daunting and intrusive in ways that I had not foreseen. The other forty-three Lunas lingered near the fringes of my consciousness. Always there. Always present. Like living in a house with forty-three roommates who never moved out and whose emotions and thoughts seeped through the walls no matter desires for privacy. Some Circle members had unlocked the secret of how to be a tough nut to crack. Mental barriers that preserved individual privacy. Others broadcast emotions completely unintentionally. Fear. Joy. Anger. Loneliness. Sending interruble all of it bleed through connection uncontrolledThe telepathic bond was intensely intimate and deeply exhausting. There's really no real privacy anymore. Even when I wanted to be alone with my thoughts, I sensed the others. Sense th

Draven's POVThe shroud of secrecy around the ritual circle finally disappeared completely and faded away. With no thought or hesitation, I broke towards Lyra right away. Caught up with her as she wobbled on her feet like a woman who had been on them too long. She was solid again. Real. Physical. But that had changed at a fundamental level, and in ways I could feel even with no magical senses. Not a goddess above all human constraints. But no longer entirely mortal, either. Something we’d never seen before. Our bond, the one that wasn’t built on divine magic, forced upon us by a controlling deity somewhere in the ether, but forged through our own free will, was perfectly in-tact and strong. I got her through it with the utmost clarity. Exhausted deeply. Frightened by what she had gone through. But whole. Intact. Still herself.“I could feel you dying,” I said roughly. My voice cracking when I dont mean it to. Held her too completely, I suppose. “A piece of you melting: felt you disapp

Cassian's POVLyra's physical form completely dissolved before my very eyes in a whole mess of raw light. One minute she was corporeal and present and, unmistakably, a woman I had known and disappointed and been educated by. The next, she was splitting apart into glimmering specks that fanned out across the air like a shower of stars exploding in infinity. The forty-three tenor Lunas shrieked in terrible perfect unison as divine essence poured violently into their mortal shells. Not a gradual planned lumbering transfer but a disastrous uncontrolled flood. Many fell to the ground instantly, unable to bear even a mere fraction of the goddess' power suddenly pressed into mortal vessels not designed or attuned to confining powers of its scope and significance. It was obvious, and clear, that the ritual was failing catastrophically. Too much pure concentrated power passing too quickly. Not making a thorough effort, much too many recipients at the same time. Not enough of the underlying mag

Lyra's POVMy proposal sputtered in the air like visible smoke. Substantial. Dangerous. Impossible to ignore.Dividing divinity among many mortal vessels could destroy us all in ghastly fashion. The ritual had been programmed very specifically and maneuvered for transfer to only a single great prepared host with the correct blood… line. Divided divine essence was not only unproven experimentally. Every ancient text Grandmother Thea had ever shown us warned against it, actively and explicitly. But it also might make something truly new in all of wolf and god-kind. Truly collective divine power. A decentralized coherent engine no single point of catastrophic failure. One goddess making all important decisions sensible for everyone else for decades.Mira approached first, hesitating not at all. "I am in completely. And if you are doing something completely batshit, I am right there with you. That’s basically how it’s been since the day we met.”That immediate confidence appeared to burst

Draven's POVHowever, I was confronted directly by the Moon Goddess through my connection to Lyra. Sought with pained and powerful determination for the heavenly consciousness that had just proposed to redeem only our relationship while damning hundreds of others to devastation and trauma.“This is manipulation,” I accused, without Ren-painting my words. “Save only us specifically to take Lyra's personal stakes off the table in making this decision. So that she must choose from pure detached logic instead of an emotional grasp of what others are feeling.”The Goddess did not refute the charge. Her presence in my head felt tired but utterly unrepentant about her means. “I’m trying to liberate her to make choices based on reason instead of emotion. To bring fear and all personal attachment that are always limiting the objective judgment out of the equation. Is that genuinely wrong?"“Yes,” I said straightaway and emphatically. "Absolutely wrong. Because you are intentionally taking away
