Olivia's Pov

The medical wing was quiet compared to the chaos of the arena. No chanting, no stomping, no crowd. Just the faint buzz of fluorescent lights and the squeak of sneakers against polished floors. My hands were still shaking when I wheeled Xander into the exam room, Ethan trailing close behind like a shadow.

Xander looked far too relaxed for someone who had just slammed into the boards hard enough to make the arena gasp. He reclined on the exam table like it was a hotel bed, his helmet off, dark hair damp with sweat, that damn smirk already tugging at his mouth.

“You’re enjoying this way too much,” I muttered, grabbing gloves.

He arched a brow. “What’s not to enjoy? I’ve got you fussing over me, Doc. Front row seat, personal hands-on care.”

“Hands-on is right,” I said sharply, adjusting the brace on his knee. “If you move, you’ll make it worse.”

He winced, teeth flashing in a half-grin. “Bossy. Don’t worry, I like that in a woman.”

“God, Xander,” I hissed, tugging the strap tighter.

“Ow! Easy,” he groaned, though the gleam in his eyes told me the pain wasn’t what had him talking. “You’re trying to kill me.”

“If I were, you’d already be dead.”

Ethan cleared his throat, arms crossed as he stood in the corner. “Can you two not flirt while he’s bleeding out?”

“We are not—” I started, horrified.

“Relax, rookie,” Xander cut in, smirking at Ethan. “Your mom just likes to play rough with me.”

“Jesus, Hayes.” I slapped an ice pack against his knee, making him yelp. “Shut up.”

He chuckled, even through the hiss of pain. “Worth it.”

I ignored him and checked his vitals. Strong pulse, steady breathing. He’d live, even if he deserved to suffer.

Ethan moved closer, his eyes darting between us. “Mom, is it serious?”

“It’s an MCL sprain at least,” I said, keeping my voice clinical. “We’ll know more after the MRI. He won’t be skating for a while.”

“A while?” Ethan’s face fell. “We need him.”

“Relax,” Xander said, lifting his head from the table. “I’ll be back before she knows it.”

“No, you won’t,” I snapped. “Not if you want to walk again in ten years.”

He looked right at me, grin widening. “Then I guess you’ll be stuck with me for a while, huh?”

“God help me,” I muttered, pressing harder on the ice pack just to make him squirm.

He groaned, but his eyes stayed locked on mine. “Mean streak. I like it.”

I felt Ethan’s gaze on us again, sharp and suspicious. I tore my eyes away from Xander’s and busied myself with wrapping his knee.

“You know Cassandra’s going to freak,” Xander said suddenly, his tone lighter but edged with something I couldn’t miss.

My hands stilled. “Your fiancée?”

“Yeah. She hates when I get hurt. Not because she cares.” He gave a bitter laugh. “Just because it looks bad for photos.”

Ethan frowned. “Come on, man. She’s worried about you.”

“Sure,” Xander drawled. “She’s worried her dress won’t match my crutches at the next gala.”

“Xander,” I warned, though my heart twisted. His words were too raw to be just jokes.

He looked at me, smirk fading into something sharper. “What? You think she’s going to rush to my bedside? Hold my hand?” He scoffed. “She’ll send her assistant with flowers and a photographer.”

Ethan shifted awkwardly. “She’s not that bad.”

“Right,” Xander muttered. “You keep believing that.”

I swallowed, focusing on the bandage. The way he spoke about Cassandra, the coldness in his voice — it wasn’t for Ethan. It was for me. A message buried in sarcasm: There’s nothing real there.

And I hated that it made my chest tighten.

“Let’s keep this professional,” I said, forcing my tone flat. “You’re injured. That’s what matters.”

“Professional,” he repeated, smirk returning. “That’s what you keep telling yourself.”

My cheeks heated, but I didn’t look up. “Stop talking.”

He leaned back, eyes still on me. “Make me.”

Ethan groaned. “Why do you two always argue like this? It’s like babysitting.”

“Because he doesn’t listen,” I said quickly.

“Because she likes bossing me around,” Xander countered.

“Because you’re impossible,” I shot back.

“Because she secretly loves it,” he finished, eyes glittering.

“Enough,” I snapped, tossing the ice pack in the bin. “You’ll follow my instructions exactly, or I’ll—”

“You’ll what?” His smirk turned wicked. “Tie me down?”

Ethan choked. “Dude!”

My face burned hot. “Out!” I pointed at Ethan.

“Me?” he asked, eyes wide.

“Yes, you,” I said, desperate for space.

He shook his head. “No way. I’m not leaving him alone. You’re not exactly intimidating him into silence.”

“I can handle him,” I argued.

“I know you can,” Xander murmured.

“Shut. Up.” I glared at him.

Ethan ran a hand through his hair. “Look, Mom, just… promise me you’ll keep an eye on him. He needs someone who actually cares if he does something stupid.”

“I don’t—”

“You do,” Ethan cut me off. His voice softened. “He’s family, Mom. You’ve known him forever. Please. Make sure it’s you.”

The words lodged in my throat. I wanted to argue, to say anyone else could handle this, but Xander’s smug grin told me he’d already won.

“See, Doc?” His voice was low, almost tender. “Even your kid wants you all over me.”

“Alexander—”

“What?” He glanced at Ethan, then back at me. “Don’t worry, rookie. Your mom takes good care of me. Best hands in the league.”

“Stop it,” I hissed, my pulse hammering.

Ethan, oblivious, nodded. “Exactly. That’s why she should do it.”

“Ethan—”

He shook his head. “He can’t go back to his place alone. Not like this.”

“Why not?” I demanded.

“Because he’ll push himself, or he’ll hide it if he gets worse. You know he will.” Ethan turned to Xander. “You will, right?”

Xander gave a lazy grin. “Guilty.”

“See?” Ethan said. “He needs watching.”

“There are trainers,” I argued. “Doctors. Nurses. He’ll be fine.”

“Not like with you,” Ethan said quietly. “I trust you.”

The words punched the air out of me.

“Well, Doc?” Xander asked softly, eyes gleaming. “Got room for me at your place?”

I froze, caught between my son’s hope and Xander’s challenge. My heart hammered, my throat tightened, and I hated that for one reckless, dangerous second… I imagined saying yes.

  • OFF LIMITS: HIS BEST FRIEND'S MOTHER    THE OFFICE KISS

Olivia's Pov Chicago was supposed to save me.The cold air when we stepped off the plane, the skyline flashing silver in the sun, the comfort of routine. I thought if I buried myself in work, if I forced myself into the rhythm of schedules and charts, I could erase what happened in Vegas.Erase the heat of his mouth.Erase the burn of his hands.Erase the memory of almost giving him everything. But I couldn’t erase the truth.I wanted him.I sat at my desk, eyes glued to my laptop, fingers typing notes that blurred into nonsense. My head pounded. My lips still tingled. I’d reapplied lipstick twice already today, as if covering the memory would erase it.“Olivia!”The door banged open, and Maya waltzed in like she owned the place. Two iced coffees in hand, hair perfect, eyes sparkling. She dropped one in front of me, then sprawled in the chair across from me.“You look like warmed-up death,” she announced.“I’m fine,” I muttered, not looking up.“Liar.” She sipped her coffee, smirking

  • OFF LIMITS: HIS BEST FRIEND'S MOTHER    THE ALMOST AFFAIR

Olivia's Pov The slam of the suite door sealed my fate. The muffled chaos of Vegas , music, shouts, laughter spilling down the hallway died the second the latch clicked into place. Silence swallowed the room, broken only by my pulse, pounding in my ears.Xander turned the lock with a sharp twist. The click echoed like a verdict.I should’ve left right then. Should’ve shoved past him, bolted back to the safety of my own room, pretended none of this was happening. But my feet wouldn’t move. My back was against the wall before I realized I’d stepped away from him. My heart hammered so loud I thought he’d hear it.He didn’t look at me like a patient. He didn’t look at me like Ethan’s mom. He looked at me like prey.“Liv,” he rasped, voice raw, chest heaving.“Don’t.” My throat tightened. “This is wrong.”“Then why are you here?” His eyes were dark, unblinking, devouring. “Why did you follow me in?”“I didn’t....”“Don’t lie to me.” He stalked closer, each step deliberate. His hand braced

  • OFF LIMITS: HIS BEST FRIEND'S MOTHER    VEGAS ROAD TRIP

Alexander's Pov Vegas. The city was already buzzing in my veins before we even left the arena. Guys were hyped, coaches wired, the whole locker room pulsing with a restless energy. Road trips always brought it out of us, but Vegas? Vegas turned everything into excess — too bright, too loud, too much. And for me, too dangerous.I pulled my hoodie tighter as I sat on the bench in the corner, rolling my shoulder and testing my leg. It was holding. Barely. The ache was there, a reminder of how close I’d come to losing it all.“You good, Hayes?” one of the rookies called out, grinning like he’d already hit the jackpot on a slot machine.“Better than you’ll be after Coach sees you’re late,” I shot back. The guys howled. The rookie flipped me off and ran for the bus.I smirked, but it didn’t stick. Because my eyes had already drifted across the room.Olivia.She was moving through the players with her clipboard, hair pulled back, eyes sharp and focused as she checked wrists, ankles, stretch

  • OFF LIMITS: HIS BEST FRIEND'S MOTHER    THE BREAKING POINT

Olivia's Pov I made myself a promise that morning: no more slipping. No more stolen moments. No more giving Xander Hayes any space to worm his way past my walls.I repeated it like a mantra as I tied my hair back in the mirror of the staff locker room. My reflection looked paler than usual, eyes rimmed with exhaustion, lips still swollen in memory. Every time I closed my eyes, I felt him again , the taste of his mouth, the bruising grip of his hands, the groan that vibrated through my chest when he kissed me like he’d die without it.“No more,” I whispered to my reflection. “It can’t happen again.”The door creaked open.“Talking to yourself, Doc?”I spun. Xander leaned in the doorway, hoodie over his practice gear, grin sharp as sin.I grabbed my clipboard like a shield. “You’re early.”He shrugged, stepping inside. “Couldn’t sleep. Thought I’d get some extra reps.” His eyes swept over me, slow, lingering. “Guess I’m not the only one who couldn’t sleep.”I turned my back on him, for

  • OFF LIMITS: HIS BEST FRIEND'S MOTHER    THE FIRST KISS

Olivia's Pov The silence of the arena’s back hall was deafening after the gala’s noise. My heels struck the concrete like gunshots, each step fueled by the kind of fury that sat too close to fear. My chest ached, not just from anger, but from something I didn’t dare name.I shoved open the door to the training wing and found him.Xander was lounging on the bench like he owned the place. His tux jacket hung loose, bowtie undone, shirt collar open, throat bare. The smirk was already there, waiting for me.“Doc,” he drawled, eyes glinting.“Don’t.” My voice cracked sharp, my hand slicing the air. “Don’t you dare.”He tilted his head, lazy and dangerous all at once. “Don’t what? Say hi? Smile? Tell you the truth?”“Reckless!” The word exploded out of me. I slammed the door shut behind me, the sound echoing off tile. “What you did tonight was reckless, Xander. You could have ruined everything. My career. Your reputation. Your engagement....”“My engagement?” His brows shot up. “You really

  • OFF LIMITS: HIS BEST FRIEND'S MOTHER    THE GALA

Alexander's Pov The flash of cameras blinded me the second Cassandra tightened her grip on my arm. The valet barely had time to take my keys before she was tugging me forward, her nails digging in like claws hidden under diamonds.“Smile,” she hissed under her breath, lips frozen in a perfect curve for the photographers.I forced my jaw to relax, lips twitching into what probably passed for a grin. I’d been through enough galas, fundraisers, and charity dinners to know the drill. Walk the carpet. Smile like you’re grateful. Act like nothing’s broken. But everything was.Cassandra’s hand clung tighter. “Fix your tie,” she whispered, as though the cameras could hear her.I tugged at the silk knot and leaned down. “Relax, Cass. They’re not photographing you for Vogue tonight.”She stiffened. “They’re photographing us. As a couple. Which means you don’t get to slouch like some....”Her voice cut off when we stepped through the ballroom doors. The sound hit me first — champagne glasses cl
