POV: Callum and Jaxon

CALLUM

The stadium is full an hour before kickoff.

I clock it during warmups the way I clock everything. Exits. Cameras. Faces.

Marcus is on the sideline in team gear, crutch gone, one brace on his knee, grinning like he's the one playing. Marisol sent me a text this morning that said "I'm watching the stream and screaming at my laptop," so I know where she is.

Then I see Elena.

Gray coat. Section 112. Third row from the aisle.

Three rows behind the seat Richard has used s

POV: Callum and JaxonCALLUMI find them before warmups end.Marisol, section 108, in a Crestfield hoodie two sizes too big. She's got a sign. Of course she's got a sign. It says RUN THE ROUTE in marker, and the letters slope downhill because she made it on a bus.Two sections over, Elena. Gray coat. Hands folded. Sitting like the stadium is her courtroom.Marcus is on the sideline in a headset he isn't supposed to be wearing. He catches me looking and points at his eyes, then at me. 'I see you.'Petra's crew is filming warmups. A lens drifts across my face and I let it.And under all of it, quiet, like a hum I can't turn off: Raymond Chu.He isn't here today. Doesn't matter. His name sits in the back of my head the way a song does after you've heard it too many times."You okay?" Jaxon says, jogging up."Fine.""Your wrist rolls are fast.""They're normal.""They're fast." He studies me. "Breathe.""I'm breathing.""Do it with me then."He takes one slow breath. I match it. Right the

  • OFFSIDE    Marisol Comes to Town

POV: CallumShe's thirty minutes late and I've checked my phone nineteen times. Not that I'm counting. Marcus is counting. He's been on the couch narrating it."Twenty," he says."Shut up.""Twenty one. Your thumb is going to fall off.""I'm just making sure the bus isn't lost.""It's a bus, Cal. It has one road."The knock comes at 4:40.I'm at the door before the second one lands. She's standing in the hallway with a duffel bag bigger than her torso, her hair in a messy knot, and the wild look of someone who's been sitting still for way too long."Hi," she says."Hi.""I'm so tired I can taste it.""Did you eat?""A gas station burrito. It had feelings."I laugh. Then I pull her in.She smells like bus and cheap shampoo and home. Her arms go around my ribs and squeeze hard enough to hurt, right on the bruise from last week, and I don't say a word."You're skinny," she mumbles into my shirt."I'm an athlete.""You're a stick with a jaw.""Marisol.""I'm just saying. Feed yourself."S

  • OFFSIDE    The Scout Returns

POV: CallumCoach Ellis catches me outside the weight room on Monday. He's holding his clipboard against his chest, the way he does when he wants to look casual and fails."Reyes. Got a sec?""Sure.""Raymond Chu wants a second session. Friday. Formal." He says it flat, like he's reading a weather report. "Forty five minutes. Routes, film, a few questions. That's all."My heart does a single hard thump."That's all," I repeat."That's all." He studies my face. "Don't overthink it.""I'm not.""You're already overthinking it.""I'm not.""Your jaw is doing the thing."I relax my jaw."Good," Ellis says. "Go lift."He walks away. I stand there for a second with my pulse in my ears.'Second session. Not first. Second.'A first visit means maybe. A second means something else.---I overthink it for six hours.I do it in class. I do it in the dining hall. I do it while I'm cooking dinner, standing over a pot of rice with a wooden spoon, stirring the same circle until Marcus walks in and s

Third row from the aisle.Three rows behind the seat Richard has used since Jaxon's freshman year.'She picked that on purpose.'I almost laugh. Of course she did."You see her?" Jaxon says, jogging up next to me."Hard to miss.""She's not even pretending.""Why would she?"He shakes out his throwing arm. His eyes are bright and a little wild, the way they get before a big game. "Is he here?""Not yet.""He'll be here.""Maybe.""He's never missed a home game.""Jax." I step in front of him. "Whatever he does, you play your game. Okay?"He looks at me. Then nods.

  • OFFSIDE    Welcome Back

POV: CallumMarcus gets cleared on a Wednesday.Light activity. No practice. No contact. No running, jumping, cutting, or "doing anything stupid," which the doctor said twice, looking directly at him."He knows me," Marcus says at breakfast, holding up the clearance form like a trophy."He met you once.""And he already knows me. That's called a gift.""That's called a warning.""Same thing." He stuffs half a bagel in his mouth. "I'm going to the complex tomorrow. Don't talk me out of it.""I wasn't going to.""Good. I'd have won anyway."I watch him chew, smug and loud and alive, and something in my chest loosens that I didn't know was tight.'Six weeks on a couch. He earned this.'---Thursday morning he rolls up to practice on a crutch, grinning like he owns the place. The locker room is half full. Guys are taping, joking, being idiots. Then Marcus pushes through the door and says, at full volume:"Did you miss me or did you miss me?"The room stops. Then it explodes.Somebody whoo

  • OFFSIDE    The World

POV: JaxonI didn't plan to say it.That's the truth. I sat down at his table with a speech in my head about the brand and the call and what it all meant, and the word just fell out of my mouth like it had been waiting behind my teeth.'Relationship.'Same as the last line of the song. Not from trying. From finally getting too tired to try.Now it's out. On the table. Between two mugs of coffee going cold.'Say something. Anything. Take it back. Don't take it back.'Callum doesn't move. He's looking at the word like it's something he can see. His hand is flat on the table next to his mug, and his thumb is pressed against the edge so hard the nail is white.I know this look. It's the one he had when he listened to Richard's recorded call. The one he had when Simone asked him her first question. Careful. Still. Receiving, not managing.'Don't rush him. Let him have it.'I rush him anyway."I'm not trying to make it a thing," I say. "It's just what the woman said. I'm repeating it. I did
