Chapter 1 – You Bastard
Ana The slap landed before I even registered her hand had moved. My head snapped violently to the side, my ear screamed with a high-pitched ring, and a burning sting erupted across my cheek. I hit the hard stone floor, my palms scraping painfully against the rough surface, but I did not utter a sound. I knew from experience that screaming only invited worse punishment. Luna Vera's imposing shadow stretched out, engulfing me. “You bastard,” she spat, her voice pitched low, thick with pure disgust. The sheer hostility in her tone was enough to make the other maids instantly pretend they were deaf and utterly preoccupied. “Look at me when I address you.” I slowly raised my eyes. Her icy blue gaze immediately pinned me, filled with an intense fury that bordered on hatred. “How dare you stand there grinning while Prince Desmond walked by?” she demanded, stepping closer until the hem of her rustling silk skirts brushed my knees. “A low-life maid like you… how dare you imagine anyone in this entire palace could possibly favor someone of your kind? Trash born from a whore.” I tasted the metallic sting of blood as my teeth accidentally cut the inside of my cheek. “I wasn’t smiling. I truly didn’t do anything,” I managed to whisper, struggling to keep my voice from shaking. Her hand shot out again, and the second stinging blow split my lip. A trickle of warm blood ran immediately down my chin. “Don’t you dare lie to me,” she hissed. She then grabbed the kettle sitting by the hearth; steam was visibly rising from its spout. “You should be incredibly grateful the Alpha King didn’t execute you the moment your worthless mother died. He tolerated your presence for sixteen years. And now you’ve reached eighteen, and suddenly you’ve forgotten your place? Are you attempting to play some dirty little game?” “I didn’t—” She cut me off. The hot water poured out, drenching my shoulder and chest. The pain was instant and blinding. A raw, piercing scream tore from my throat before I could clench my jaw and stop it. My skin felt like it was instantly melting beneath my clothes, and I felt blisters rising as the cruel heat sank deep into my flesh. I instantly curled into a fetal position, shivering uncontrollably, trying to gasp for breath through the agonizing throbbing that spread across my entire upper body. Vera crouched down directly in front of me and snatched my chin, forcing my face up toward hers. Her fingernails dug sharply into my tender skin. “Let me make something perfectly clear, Ana,” she said. Her voice was terrifyingly soft, yet dripping with cruelty. “I am the chosen Luna of this whole empire. I am the daughter of the Great Council Alpha. And you…” She sneered, her lip curling slightly. “You are nothing. You don’t even know who your real father is. If you dare to smile at prince again, look at him again, or even breathe air too close to him, I promise I will make absolutely sure your tongue ends up nailed to my bedroom wall as a warning. Do you understand me?” Tears instantly mixed with the running water on my face. My throat felt painfully constricted. I couldn’t form a word, so I desperately nodded. She released my chin abruptly. My forehead slammed hard against the cold floor. “Clean up this mess immediately,” she ordered as she spun away. “Attempt something like this again, and you will not live to witness the sunrise.” The heavy door closed softly behind her with a final, echoing thud. I remained right where I was, trembling violently, my skin screaming with a renewed pulse of agony with every single heartbeat. Why me? What terrible crime had I committed simply by being born? After what felt like an eternity, I forced my 👁️ to stand. My legs were shaking so severely I nearly collapsed again. But I grabbed the dirty bucket and scrubbed the floor, regardless, biting down hard to stifle every whimper and sound my body wanted to release. Blood, water, and the sickening scent of burned skin clung to the stones, and I furiously wiped them all away, just as I wiped away my own presence and self every single day. When the floor was finally pristine, a guard appeared abruptly at the doorway. “The Alpha requires your presence,” he announced. His voice was completely flat, entirely uncaring. I followed him without a word, my head bowed low, the burns on my shoulder throbbing intensely beneath my thin, torn sleeves. The King’s private chamber doors opened, and I stepped inside, immediately lowering myself into a deep bow. My father sat in his high-backed chair, his face set in a stern, unchanging expression. Queen Elizabeth stood calmly beside him, her composure perfect but her demeanor utterly cold. Desmond was also seated, his posture rigid and his expression unreadable. “Alpha, you called for me,” I murmured. My father did not even spare a glance at the fresh burns visible on my neck or the dried blood staining my lip. “Desmond and Luna Vera’s ceremony is rapidly approaching,” he stated. His voice was utterly devoid of any emotion. “Until that ceremony is completed, I do not wish to see your face anywhere within the main palace walls. You will not speak unless you are directly spoken to. You will not appear before any guests. If you make even a single error, I will personally drag you to the courtyard myself. Do you understand the severity of this?” I stared at him, desperately searching for any trace of the man who had once lifted me into his arms when I was a tiny girl. There was nothing left of that man. I swallowed hard, forcefully pushing down the desperate sob that was rising in my throat. “Yes, Alpha.” Queen Elizabeth added, her tone soft, almost gentle, yet chilling, “Be grateful that we have allowed you to live, child.” Desmond never once lifted his eyes from the floor. I backed out of the room slowly, bowing low as I moved until the heavy doors finally closed between us, sealing my isolation. The walk back to my tiny room felt agonizingly endless. Every single step pulled at the burned skin across my chest. When I finally managed to shut the door behind me, I slid down the wall and sank onto the cold ground, pulling my knees tightly to my chest. My entire body ached painfully. My voice cracked as I whispered, “Moon Goddess, why must I suffer so greatly for a sin I never committed?” I pressed my forehead hard against my knees, shaking with silent, desperate sobs. Nothing in this cruel palace truly belonged to me—not my small room, not even my name, and certainly not my very breath. And yet, I was expected to live out my life as if I owed them absolutely everything.Chapter 58 – AnaI stood in the middle of my large, quiet room. The events of the day felt like a heavy weight on my shoulders, and I was just about to lie down on the soft bed when I heard a soft knock sound at my door. The sound alone made me pause in my tracks. I stayed perfectly still and listened to the silence that followed. In the Silverfang palace, no one ever bothered to knock. The guards and the royals lived by different rules there. Doors were always pushed open without any warning. Guards would march into my space whenever they felt like it, and I was never allowed to have any privacy. To them, I was just a servant, and servants did not need doors that locked. But here, in this new place, someone actually stood on the other side and waited for my permission to enter. It was very strange to me. It felt almost civil, which was something I was not used to.I straightened my back slowly. Every instinct I had was on high alert. My heart began to beat a little faster, but I did
Chapter 57 – StellaI could not believe that this was actually happening to me. I sat in the darkness of my room, my body shaking with a mix of physical pain and pure, white-hot rage. The royal guards had actually whipped me. They had given me twenty lashes across my back because of that girl. Because of Ana.The sting of the whip still burned across my skin like a thousand hot needles. It felt raw and humiliating. Every time I tried to move, even just a little bit, it felt like fire was scraping against my flesh. I clenched my teeth so hard that my jaw began to ache. I pressed my palms flat against the cold stone wall of my chamber, trying to steady my breathing and keep myself from screaming out loud. But the physical pain from the lashes wasn't what hurt the most in this moment. It was the deep, cutting insult of it all.I thought about Ana. That worthless, long-lost bastard girl. She had spent her whole life as a servant, and now she was here, ruining everything I had built.I had
Chapter 56 – AnaI stood perfectly still in the center of the large room. I stayed right where I was and watched the guards drag Stella away toward the door. Her screams were loud and high, tearing through the quiet of the corridor until the sound began to fade. Eventually, her voice turned into nothing but faint echoes bouncing off the stone. She struggled with all her strength against the armored men. She begged for mercy one second and cursed my name the next, but none of it mattered to anyone in the room. The thick stone walls seemed to swallow her protests without any mercy at all.Kai stood by the door for a moment. He hesitated for only a single second before he decided to follow the guards. Just before he disappeared around the corner, he stopped. He shot a look back at me over his shoulder. His eyes were dark and full of resentment. I could see that he was burning with a feeling that was very close to pure hatred. He didn't say a word, but his expression said everything.I me
Chapter 55 – AnaThe room fell into a deathly silence the very second my palm made contact with Stella’s cheek. The sharp crack of the slap echoed off the cold stone walls. It was a sound so loud and so sudden that it made the air in the chamber feel like it was vibrating. For a long, heavy moment, no one in the room moved a single muscle. Stella stood there as if she had been turned to stone. Her head was still turned to the side from the force of my hand, and I could see her pale skin already blooming into a bright red color beneath the shape of my handprint.Kai was the first person to break the silence.“What the hell is wrong with you—” he started to shout. His eyes were wide with a mix of shock and anger as he took a quick step toward me.But before the words could even finish leaving his mouth, I turned my body and slapped him too.It was a hard, solid hit. His head snapped to the side just like Stella's had. The sound of my hand hitting his face was just as loud and just as fi
Chapter 54 – AnaI sat on the edge of the grand bed, my hands resting loosely in my lap. I spent a long time just staring at the dark stone wall across from me. My mind was trying to make sense of everything that had happened in the last few hours. The room I was in felt enormous. It was much larger than the entire shack I had lived in back at the Silverfang pack. High ceilings arched above my head, and they were carved with ancient symbols and patterns that I didn’t recognize. Thick, heavy rugs were spread across the floor, making the cold stone feel soft under my feet. A massive fireplace took up almost one entire side of the chamber. Its embers were still glowing and warm from the fire that had been lit earlier. Shelves lined the walls, and they were stacked with old books, leather scrolls, and various weapons. Those weapons looked like they carried the weight of a long history and a lot of bloodshed.Everything about this room told a story of power. It showed authority and extreme
Chapter 53 – AnaThe Shadow Pack territory was nothing like I had imagined in my head. As we walked through the entrance, I saw tall walls made of solid black stone that rose up high around wide courtyards. I noticed ancient runes carved into the rock. These runes pulsed with a faint, steady light under the silver moon. The massive iron gates were open, and they were guarded by warriors wearing dark armor. Their eyes were very sharp and alert as they watched us pass by. Banners with a crowned-wolf sigil snapped loudly in the wind. The sound of the fabric hitting the poles reminded me of a warning, but it also felt like a promise of protection.I realized very quickly that power lived in this place. It was not the suffocating kind of power that crushed your spirit or kept you trapped in fear like the power in Silverfang. Instead, this felt like a controlled and disciplined strength. I saw warriors training in the open fields beyond the stone walls. Their movements were fast, precise,
