“Bestie!” Josephine squealed as she ran into my arms to pull me into a warm hug.

“I've missed you so much!” I said as we held onto each other.

“You have no idea!” Josephine said, “I was about to die of boredom in Baltimore without you.”

I laughed as we separated.

“You're not resuming work today?” She looked at me because I was not in my scrubs.

I shook my head.

“I asked for an extension of my leave,” I told her, “I want to resolve the paternity stuff before resuming work.”

  • ONE NIGHT STAND BETWEEN BEST FRIENDS    CHAPTER 92

SalmaI had come out to enjoy a quiet stress-free night with Josephine after putting Leona to bed and leaving her with her great-grandmother, Rita. The last person I had thought I would encounter was Brandon. “Josephine?” I glared at my best friend who had convinced me that joining tables with Brandon was not such a bad idea. She was wrong—very wrong, and I was now paying for that with unsolicited advice from Brandon. As Josephine and I walked out of the bar, I began to yell my frustration at the top of my voice.“He's an idiot!” I screamed, “he hasn't even known Leona for two minutes and he thinks he's an expert on her?” “Salma… you need to keep calm,” Josephine said, trying to get me to calm down, but it was quite impossible at this point. I was already overly stimulated by everything that had happened today, and would happen tomorrow. “This is the calmest I can be, Josie,” I said to my friend, near tears, “is this how it's going to be from now on? Making every decision about my

Brandon It was official. Everyone in Elaine's family was nuts and perhaps that included Elaine herself. As I stepped out of my private jet I tried to push the thought of Elaine and her crazy family behind me because I was now in Baltimore to deal with another form of craziness here. Salma. But when Leona crossed my mind, a smile appeared on my face. Unfortunately, there was a court order preventing me from seeing my little girl. I hoped at the very least that I would get a glimpse of her on the day of the DNA testing which was happening tomorrow. “Mr. McClean?" “I am he.” The man who had just greeted me smiled, “I will be your driver and PA during your stay here,” he said to me. I nodded and allowed him to escort me to an already waiting car. He drove me right to the Four Seasons Hotel in Baltimore, where I took a much-needed sleep upon checking in. When I woke up in the evening, I decided to visit the bar nearby and have a drink or two. I was still on my first drink when I s

BrandonElaine knew I could not turn her request down in the presence of my mother so she had her way. I took her to the dance floor, and moved my body mindlessly. When the song was over, I found an excuse to slip out of the reception, unable to continue with the pretense. I felt trapped like I was submerged underwater, and I could not come out no matter how hard I tried. You're doing this for the baby. I had to remind myself. No matter how I felt at the moment, the baby was innocent and deserved to be raised by loving parents. Besides, they did say that children brought the parents closer, didn't they? Maybe this was what Elaine and I needed to get our relationship back on track. I stumbled into one of the bathrooms, hoping to relieve myself of excess fluid and take a moment before returning to the party. I flushed and covered the toilet seat, sitting on it and staring into nothingness until I heard the stall beside me fling open and shut. Then I heard voices—one I recognised and

I shook my head. “I asked for an extension of my leave,” I told her, “I want to resolve the paternity stuff before resuming work.” Josephine did not look happy. “Hopefully this is good for Leona.” I shrugged. I honestly had no idea what to think. I had returned to Baltimore yesterday and found out that while Leona was no longer wearing Brandon's jacket everywhere she went, she used the jacket as her blanket and would not sleep without it. Was it possible that there was a part of her that missed her father even though she did not know Brandon was her father? “You have to tell me everything that's been happening around here,” we s

Brandon Tegan McClean’s eyes sparkled as she looked at her husband, “baby, why don't you tell Brandon our news?” At least my parents had dropped the topic about my well-being. “Are you sure?” my father asked my mother. “Tell me already!” I said. I knew they enjoyed torturing me with suspense. “We’re having a baby!” my mother squealed in excitement. I was not excited with them, instead, I frowned and my frown continued to deepen with every second that passed when they did not scream that it was a joke. “Oh my goodness, Brandon,” my father began to laugh after a while, “you should see your face.” “This is not funny,” I chided my parents. “Your face was so worth it!” my mother laughed. “So? You're not pregnant?” I shifted my gaze to my mother who had to be in her fifties. “Of course not, silly!” she said with a laugh, “but a niece of mine died and left a baby boy behind. We will be taking care of the baby for a while.” “So no more travelling?” I asked them. Their faces turne

Brandon “Smile,” Elaine whispered beside me, “you can't act like you're being forced here.” I grounded my teeth in annoyance, and tried to keep a smile on my face against my will. No one knew Elaine and I was pregnant yet. And no one would, until after we got married. I tried to imagine what it would be like to be married to someone who had forced me into it. The only word I could come up with however was miserable. I would be miserable. Yet, Elaine wanted me to smile and laugh at her parent's vow renewal like nothing bad had happened to us. I wanted to imagine the little baby growing in her womb at the moment, but I could come up with nothing. Would the baby look like me like Leona did? Or would the baby look like Elaine? Or perhaps inherit Richard's slimy looks? A shudder actually went through my body as I pictured a mini Richard. Elaine and I took our seats in the front beside my parents who had been invited to the event. No one was aware of the bad blood between me and Richa
