The question hung in the air like a dark cloud. I stared at the picture on my phone for what felt like forever. My thumb hovered over the reply button. I wanted to type something angry, to ask who they were and what they wanted from me. But I stopped myself. Replying would only make me really look like a victim. It would show them that they had gotten to me.

No. I said to myself, It would only make sense if I acted like I hadn’t seen anything.

I switched off the phone completely and placed it on the bedside table. The room felt too quiet. I climbed into bed, pulled the covers up to my chin, and stared at the ceiling. My mind was still racing with images from the party, Alex on his knee, Mum’s happy face, Mark’s hand on me in that hallway. The flash of the camera. Sleep didn’t come easy. I tossed and turned for a long time before I finally drifted off.

The next day would be a long one, I thought as I closed my eyes.

Morning came too quickly. I woke up with a slight headache but forced myself to get ready. I chose a sharp black pantsuit, applied light makeup, and pinned my hair neatly. At the office, the usual energy was there. Phones were ringing, my team was moving around with files and samples. I had just settled at my desk when the company line rang again.

Sarah picked it up and looked at me. “It’s the senator’s office. They’re ready for the meeting today.”

I nodded. “Tell them we’ll be there in an hour.”

I took Lisa, one of my most reliable female employees, with me. We drove out of the city toward the senator’s mansion. I pushed the thoughts away. Today was about business.

When we arrived at the mansion, the place was even more impressive than I had imagined. Tall iron gates opened automatically. The driveway was lined with perfectly trimmed trees. Security men in army uniforms stood at various points. Inside the main building, the living room was massive with marble floors, expensive chandeliers, and large windows that let in plenty of light. Young ladies in neat uniforms moved quietly around the house.

“Maids, I guess,” Lisa whispered to me as we looked around.

A polite maid soon approached us. “Miss Evelyn and team, we’ve been expecting you. Please follow me.”

She led us through a long corridor with beautiful artwork on the walls into another elegant living room. The senator, his wife, and their children and the celebrant were waiting. They stood up to greet us warmly.

“Welcome to our home,” the senator said, shaking my hand firmly.

His wife smiled kindly. “Can we offer you something to drink? Juice, coffee, or tea?”

We accepted some fresh orange juice and small snacks. After exchanging pleasant greetings and talking briefly about the weather and the recent charity gala I planned, we moved into business.

The senator leaned forward. “For our daughter’s twentieth birthday, we want something truly special. Elegant but youthful. We’re thinking of a luxury garden party mixed with modern touches. Live band, excellent catering, and a stage for performances.”

Lisa took careful notes. “We can work with a soft gold and cream color scheme. Custom lighting to create different moods throughout the evening. We’ll have a main dance area, a lounge section for older guests, and interactive zones for the younger crowd.”

Lisa wrote everything down quickly. The wife added more ideas. “We want it to be the best event of the year. Imported flowers, a special fireworks display at the end, and a video tribute from her friends. Nothing should be ordinary. We want this to be the best for our daughter.”

I explained our process in detail. “We’ll handle vendor coordination, security, invitations, and full event management. Our team will do multiple site visits to make sure everything matches your vision. We also have backup plans for weather or any last-minute changes.”

We discussed the guest list size, menu options, entertainment ideas, and timeline. The senator wanted tight security because of his position. I assured him we had experience with high-profile clients. After going back and forth professionally for nearly an hour, we agreed on the final package.

The amount was twenty million dollars. The date was set for five weeks from now. I brought out the contract papers. We reviewed the terms together, then I signed on behalf of Aurora Event Agency. They signed too. We shook hands once more.

“Thank you,” the senator said. “We’re confident in your team.”

On the way back to the office, I couldn’t stop smiling. Twenty million dollars. This single contract could change everything for my company. We could open new branches, hire more staff, and take on international projects. Aurora could truly go global. The thought made me feel light and hopeful for the first time in weeks.

What Evie didn’t know was that her mother had been planning a serious conversation for when she came over that evening. After the engagement party, her mum had spoken at length with Mark. She now believed it was best for Evie to come back home. She wanted to persuade her daughter gently but firmly.

Things were about to become much more difficult for Evie. Living under the same roof as Mark would bring new temptations, new risks, and new complications she wasn’t ready to face.

Alex stared at Mark, his mouth open in disbelief. He let out a short laugh, trying to play it cool. “You’re joking right?” he asked in that funny tone, like it was all some big prank between guys. His eyes darted around the room, hoping for a punchline. Mark’s face stayed completely straight. No smile. No wink. Just cold, serious eyes locked on Alex. I sat there on the couch, wine glass still in my hand, watching the whole thing in silence. My heart beat fast but I kept my mouth shut. The tension felt like a wire pulled tight, ready to snap any second. Mom jumped in quickly to break it. She waved her hand and chuckled softly. “Come on honey, you know it’s not possible, don’t be silly now. We’re all just having fun here.” Mark finally chuckled, leaning back on the couch like nothing happened. “Yeah yeah, I was just kidding.” He waved it off with his hand. “Alright Alex, simple dare then. Stand up and do ten push-ups right here. No cheating.” Alex grumbled but stood up. He dropped t

When Mom saw Alex coming in, she lit up right away. Then hurried over, arms open. “Alex! Oh, welcome,” she said, pulling him inside with a warm hug. She patted his back like he was her son. “It’s so good to see your face this evening. We were just sitting here talking about spending more time together as a family. Perfect timing.” Mark’s face tightened beside me on the couch. His jaw went hard, eyes narrowing just a fraction. I didn’t turn around. I kept staring at the tea in my cup, fingers gripping it tighter. The last person I wanted to deal with right now was Alex. Not after everything. Alex finished greeting Mom, thanking her softly for the welcome, his voice polite and smooth. Then he walked straight toward me. His footsteps sounded too loud in the room. “Hey Evie,” he said, stopping close. Mark moved fast, stepping right between us like it was nothing. He blocked the path smoothly, flashing that easy smile of his. “Good to see you drop by, Alex.” He stuck his hand out firm.

The message below it read something that made my blood run cold.“What the fuck?” I whispered under my breath, staring at the screen in disbelief. My heart slammed against my ribs the second I saw the video file and message. I didn’t think. I grabbed it immediately, even before Mark noticed and shoved it deep into my bag before she came back.Mom walked back from the kitchen right then, two cups of tea steaming in her hands. She set one down in front of me with a warm smile.“Here, extra honey the way you like it,” she said, sitting across from me. “Mark, are you sure you don’t want one?”“I’m good,” he replied, leaning back.I wrapped my fingers around the cup, forcing a nod and a smile. The tea burned my tongue but I kept sipping. That phone in my bag felt like a bomb. What does that blackmailer want? Should I not have ignored him? This is getting far. My mind spun while Mom chatted about her day. I barely heard her.A couple minutes later she put her cup down and started patting he

When I got back to the office, the excitement from the senator’s contract was still bubbling inside me. I called all the available staff into the main conference room. Sarah, James, Lisa, and about twelve other team members gathered around the long table, looking at me with curious eyes. “Everyone, listen up,” I said, standing at the head of the table. “We just secured a million-dollar contract for the senator’s daughter’s birthday. This is one of the biggest we’ve ever landed. It means we have a very big week ahead of us. Planning, vendor meetings, site visits, design approvals, and full-scale preparations. I need all of you focused and ready. No delays, no excuses. This event has to be perfect.” Sarah leaned forward. “When do we start the initial proposals?” “Today,” I replied. “James, I want lighting and stage concepts by tomorrow afternoon. Lisa, start researching high-end catering options and imported flowers. The rest of you, review the brief I’ll send in the next hour. We’ll

Suddenly, a bright flash came from the far end of the hallway. Like the click of a camera or a phone flashlight going off. We both froze. Someone was there. Watching. Taking pictures. I pushed Mark back hard, my palms pressing firmly against his chest. My heart was hammering so loud I could hear it in my ears. I quickly adjusted my dress, pulling the fabric down and smoothing out any wrinkles with trembling hands. I fixed my hair too, making sure nothing looked out of place. Mark’s face changed from surprise to pure anger in a second. He didn’t waste time talking to me. He turned sharply and ran after the person, his shoes echoing loudly down the hallway. I stood there alone for a moment, trying to steady my breathing. My mind was spinning. Who could it be? A guest who wandered off? One of the waiters? Someone who knew too much about me and Mark? Or was that the blackmailer? The questions kept coming, but I had no answers. I took one last deep breath, forced my legs to move, and wal
