High School

The next day passed quietly. No chaos, no drama. Just… quiet. Margret held Valery’s hand like she was scared she’d float away. The visit to the monkey sanctuary came and went, and before they could even process it, they were home again.

Margret followed Valery inside and stayed in her room for a couple of hours.

“Did you girls have fun?” Mrs. Benson asked with a warm smile, but it faded fast when she noticed Valery’s silence. “Did something happen?”

“No, Mrs. Benson,” Margret said quickly. “She’s just upset we left early. The mountains were really something. Right, Val?”

Valery gave a half-hearted nod and forced a smile.

“Alright, unpack and come down for supper before Margret heads home,” her mom said, already moving on.

Once the door clicked shut, Margret turned to her.

“It’s okay, Val. No moron is worth your precious tears.”

Valery nodded. She sighed, reached into her backpack, and pulled something out.

“I wanted to give this to you during the trip. It’s supposed to sym

Riley was always there; getting on Valery’s nerves, poking holes in her excuses. Not a day went by where he didn’t interrogate her about Derrick. If she even breathed near her phone, he’d snatch it, scrolling through texts like a detective with a vendetta.Around Margret, they were on their best behavior. Riley kept his distance, and Valery played it cool. But the moment Margret left the room, Riley was impossible. He teased. He complained. He questioned everything. And somewhere in all that chaos, Valery started to see it. The charm hiding inside his honesty. The way he told her the truth even when it hurt. Somehow, that started to matter more than sweet lies.“Hey. You have visitors.”Valery groaned as her sister barged into the room one morning, breaking the peace of her Saturday nap. She rolled over, groggy and disoriented.“Visitors?” she asked, barely awake.“They’re downstairs,” her sister replied before leaving the door open.Valery sat up, confused. When she reached the botto

Margret parked her car at home, feeling exhausted. As she climbed out, she noticed her front door was ajar. Her heartbeat quickened. ‘Thieves?’ She scanned her porch, her mind uneasy as she tiptoed into the living room.Fortunately, everything was intact. Nothing was moved or destroyed. Then she heard footsteps behind her. She spun around.“What do you want, Derrick?” Her voice was sharp with disdain.Derrick stood there, his silhouette tall and ominous in the dim entryway. The moment he took a step forward, her instincts screamed at her to run, so she did - bolting for her room. Derrick chased her down, slamming his palm against the door just as her hand reached the knob. Before she could retreat further, his body pressed hers against the hard surface. One of his hands clamped her shoulder while the other slid up, his fingers curling around her neck deliberately.Margret held her breath, staring at his face mere inches away. His grip tightened, firm enough to scare her, but not enoug

She should have restarted on Monday, but the thrill of being back made it hard to wait.At first, she didn’t pay attention to it - the turning heads as she walked by. Some faces lit up, happy to see her alive and whole. Others watched with parted lips, mystified that she had managed to survive after being dragged like that on national television. Those who soiled her name with gossip didn’t bother correcting their words, even after she was cleared of all charges. Then there were those who looked disappointed.Christar, for example, would not stop giving her the stink eye while their supervisor briefed them on their next duties. Valery pretended not to notice, scribbling notes she already knew by heart. But that wasn’t all.The chief of the department approached her after rounds, clearing his throat like a prelude to bad news.“We’re putting you back on general duty for a while.”She blinked. “We have to divert the attention from me and the special case, is that it?” Her voice was quie

Margret didn’t look at her. “No. Go away.”Valery opened her mouth to plead but stopped herself as Sandra approached. She rose, brushing the sand from her skirt, trying to swallow the bitterness of being replaced.Derrick caught her wrist as she walked back. “Come with me,” he whispered.“Where to?”“Don’t ask,” he said with that smile that usually soften her knees. He guided her through the garden path to his room. The moment the door shut, his mouth was on hers, his hands impatient and sure. She kissed him back at first, letting him press her into the door, his warmth dizzying, but when he reached under her skirt, she pushed him away.“Not this again… Stop.”“Come on, my Violet… don’t pretend you don’t want me,” he breathed against her neck. “It’s the perfect time to know each other this way. It’ll make us stronger.”“My mum said I’d wound up pregnant if I played such games.” Valery averted her eyes, shy and ashamed to even be talking about the subject.“Your mum is just paranoid. B

They changed at the stalls near the waterfall. The sound of the water crashing down echoed through the trees. Mist rose around them, settling on their skin like dew at dawn.Riley stood there, staring up at the waterfall, lips parted slightly. “Wow… this is… something else.” His mother would be turning the school upside down if she knew he was here.Valery raised a brow at him. “You look like you’re about to let down the waterworks from your eyes.”“I’m not crying. It just… feels nice,” he mumbled, almost embarrassed by his own awe.The students waded into the pool beneath the falls, screaming and laughing as the freezing water slapped their warm skin. Some of the boys formed a noisy chain, dunking each other under and yodeling old folk songs, their voices mixing with the roar of the waterfall.Riley stood near the edge, his arms crossed, just soaking in the cool spray with a small smile.Derrick crept up beside him. “Feeling enlightened, old man?”“Yeah,” Riley chuckled softly. “I fe
