The third day of the donation was crowned with music. A concert was blasting at the huge school field, pulling staff and students alike to clap, cheer, and dance in groups. Margret and Valery, however, had enough of the noise. They slipped away with two dripping cups of ice cream and a bundle of magazines, sinking into the quiet of their classroom. A few other students loitered, but not enough to ruin the feel of privacy.

“I’m going to do it today,” Margret blurted, spoon halfway to her mouth. “I’ll tell Riley how I feel.”

Valery straightened so quickly she almost lost her ice cream. “Are you sure?”

“I’m positive,” Margret said, nodding with that stubborn gleam in her eye. “Ever since he got back, I’ve noticed he’s calmer, gentler. He’s like the old Riley again. I think it was the illness that made him so difficult before.” She leaned closer, lowering her voice. “But I’ll need your help. You’ll tell him to meet me at the library, and stand watch at the aisle while we talk.”

  • OUR MOON HAS STRINGS   Chapter 74 (b)

Anita moved from room to room with her usual energy, balancing charts, IVs, and conversations all in stride. She had just dropped off a patient’s file when she stopped at the lab counter for results. One of the technicians, a young man with too much cologne and not enough tact, leaned against the desk with a grin. “You know, Anita, you don’t have to come here just for work. I could show you the city lights one of these evenings.”Anita didn’t even glance up from the folder she was flipping open. “I’m allergic to city lights. They give me hives.”The technician blinked, thrown off, but the other lab staff erupted in laughter. It was all fun. Someone nudged his shoulder, teasing him as Anita collected her results and walked off, smirking. “You’ll live, George,” she said over her shoulder, and the room chuckled harder.By the time she returned to her patients, the incident had already been retold twice. She shook her head, amused, until a familiar figure caught her eye in the corridor.R

Ryan sat still and let the house nurse do her job. She checked his pressure, drew some blood, handed him his pills. Without a word, he swallowed them and sipped on water. This was the routine, one of the few requirements left to keep the disease under control. Yet the medicine felt more like chains than an agent of recovery. His body grew heavier with each dose. He felt more reluctant getting out of bed, more unwilling to work and even more - to live.It wasn’t just his body that was failing him. His mind was the true battlefield. His thoughts kept sinking lower, dragging him into shadows. These days he didn’t dare to dream. Even the sleeping pills were fed up with him, leaving him staring at the wall night after night. He had nothing but silence for company.Just as the afternoon session was ending, a maid announced a visitor. But the visitor did not wait to be announced - Margret was already there, leaning against the door.“How is he?” she asked the nurse.“His pressure is lower th

Hours crawled by. The clock seemed to mock Derrick with each tick. He sat, stood, paced, sat again. His mind was in disarray and he couldn’t stay still.‘Four months. A boy. My son.’The thought looped in his mind until his chest ached. Then the other voice - Margret’s, slid in.He pressed his palms against his face, wishing he could scrape the thoughts out. But they burrowed deeper.Eventually, Valery opened her eyes. Jennifer was there first, clutching her hand. “Val… thank God. You’re safe. You’re safe.”Valery blinked through the fog, her vision clearing. Her body was sore, her abdomen heavy with pain. She turned her head and found Derrick, standing at the foot of her bed like a guard. His clothes were messy, his eyes hollow, but he hadn’t left. Not for a moment. Her heart squeezed in her chest. For the first time in weeks, she looked at him without frustration, but with a sudden clarity. That maybe, beneath the wreckage of their fights and her mistakes, Derrick remained the one

Derrick sat hunched in the waiting area, elbows digging into his thighs, his face buried in his hands. His foot tapped a frantic rhythm against the floor. Moments ago, his signature had sealed the papers authorizing a D & C. His hand had shaken as he wrote his name. He was now a father discarding his dying child with the stroke of a pen.Valery was still inside. Cold doors shut between them. There was nothing he could do but wait. Nothing but breathe - and even that hurt. The questions circled him like vultures. How long had she known? Why hadn’t she told him? Was that why she pushed him away, shutting her ears every time he begged her to talk?“Derrick!”He looked up. Jennifer came rushing toward him, her steps quick, her face already written with fear. She dropped into the chair beside him, clutching his arm.“How is she?”Her brows knitted when Derrick lifted his head. One look at his face and her heart sank.“What’s happened to my sister?” Her voice pitched higher, sharp with pani

The next morning, Margret wasted no time, arriving with several test kits. She followed Valery into her bedroom, placing them carefully on the table.“Go on,” Margret said firmly.Valery sighed but obeyed. Minutes later, she returned, setting the samples in a tray. “Now we wait.”“How about breakfast? I bought those pastries you love. Do you mind making some chocolate tea? You need to distract yourself for a while,” Margret said.“Sure.” Valery managed a smile, retreating to the kitchen.Margret’s eyes darted to the tests, watching as faint lines began to form. Her heart pounded as she mentally crossed her fingers.“Coming!” she responded when Valery shouted from the kitchen. Then she grabbed her bag and joined her friend, helping to plate the pastries and carry them to the dining table.Over steaming mugs and sweet croissants, they spoke.“Are you nervous?” Margret asked gently.“Yes,” Valery admitted, twisting her fingers. “This whole situation scares me. If it turns out positive, I

Valery looked up at the older woman, bubbling with laughter. “Ha! What sort of superstitious diagnosis is that?”It was almost a reflex in this part of the world. Once a woman felt a little dizzy or nauseous, the verdict from older women was automatic: pregnant. The head servant’s eyes softened. “Do not be upset, my dear. I am a woman too. I know these things. Tell me, when last did you see blood?”Valery shook her head, still laughing, though a nervous edge threaded through it. “Come on… forget it. I practically live at the hospital these days. If I were pregnant, someone would’ve said something.” She brushed that idea off with ease. “Please, don’t go telling my mum these things, you know how she gets.” She reached out and clasped the woman’s hand.“Okay, if you say so.” The servant yielded. “Nonetheless, I’ll make you some tea to settle your tummy.”“Alright.” Valery collapsed back onto her bed with a sigh, sprawled like a child. The ceiling spun just a little, her head heavy, her b
