OSCAR GRAY

“Very well, Mr. Governor. This is awesome news. I will be at the State House first thing tomorrow to sign the necessary documents,” I said over the phone.

Getting off the phone with the governor, I immediately sent Tilda a message:

Get ready in an hour, love. I have news for you. And yes, no questions until we see.

Her response came in less than a minute:

Alright, darling. Send the location or should I come over to the house?

I replied: Give me a moment.

This was very important to me. O. Gray Future Corporation had won the bidding for the Houston State Project, and it was all thanks to Tilda. That was what the governor had called to inform me about.

And to top it off, the state would release fifty percent of the startup funds before the project even begins. This was completely unheard of.

TILDAThe soft knock on the door jolted me awake. As I turned over, the memories of the night before began to slowly creep in, wrapping around me like a fog I hadn’t asked for. Then I saw him—Oscar—sleeping peacefully beside me, his arm draped across the sheets like he belonged there.I gasped.Oscar? He had spent the night here. Oh my God… I actually let him in.What about the kids? Had they seen him? They’d made it very clear that they didn’t want any man near me. How on earth would I explain this?Worse… I hadn’t even locked the door. The knock came again, this time softer, more cautious. Panic welled up in my chest. I quickly did the sign of the cross and tiptoed out of bed like a thief sneaking from a crime scene. Was it one of the kids? Were they still home? What would I do if Oscar saw them? I wasn’t ready to let out my secret yet. I could barely process it myself.Peeking through the door, I sighed in relief—it was Miranda. But still, Oscar couldn’t see her.She grabbed my han

TILDABack at my house, we stayed in the car and continued sipping the drinks we brought along, careful not to get drunk since I was the one driving. They tasted so good, we couldn’t seem to get enough. I couldn’t help but wonder what the locals used to make their drinks so rich and flavorful. It wasn’t until I felt the buzz of near-drunkenness that I finally mustered the courage to speak to Oscar.“Can I ask a favour?” I began.I knew that I shouldn’t be doing this, but with what the alcohol had done to my system, I couldn’t care less. It was the only thing that mattered to my daughter, Diamond, at this point.“What is it, dear?” he asked, his eyes desperately searching through mine. “You know you can ask me for anything.”Without hesitation, I went straight to the point. “Can you return James’ property? Life has become too hard for them since you took away everything.”“Pardon?” he stared at me, suspicion creeping into his voice. “Is it the drink? Have you had too much already?”I g

THIRD PARTYWith fingers trembling, Diamond stretched forth her hand to collect the phone, unsure of what to do, especially since she doesn’t have Oscar Gray’s number.“Take it, Diamond,” Shantel persuaded with a cleverly concealed smirk. “Your daddy should take us to meet Grandpa Monsieur King.”“Um,” Diamond swallowed hard, staring blankly at the phone in her hands. “I will call my daddy now, okay?” she fought to remain bold.Shantel giggled. “Tell him I love peanut chocolate ice cream. We should stop at the store to get one.”Diamond continued to scramble some numbers on the phone, anxiously anticipating a miracle. “I will get some ice cream too. But Mommy said I shouldn’t take much sugar,” she mumbled. If it was discovered that she had no relationship with Oscar Gray, it would be the end of her among her little friends. Not to mention that Shantel might not want to remain friends with her after that.Diamond lifted her gaze slowly. “I was wondering, Shantel.”Her voice began to cr

I don’t understand some of the questions,” Shantel requested.Diamond opened her desk locker. “You don’t need to ask, Shantel. You can always have it. I can explain the calculations better to you.”As Diamond handed over her book, she couldn’t help but notice that Shantel wasn’t her usual cheerful self. There was something odd about her withdrawn demeanor.“Which of the questions don’t you understand?” she asked gently.Shantel looked at the classwork and began writing in her own book. “Oh, I think I understand them now. I didn’t get the right question for number three.”She returned the book to Diamond after making her corrections, but hesitated to walk away, further arousing Diamond’s curiosity.“Just that? Are you sure?” Diamond asked.Shantel nodded, carefully avoidin

TILDA“Here you are, Tilda,” Oscar said as he walked up to me, just as I was finishing a discussion with some guests.“Oh, Mr. Gray,” Mr. Trevor called out cheerfully. “O. Gray did amazingly well recruiting Miss Tilda,” he complimented.Oscar extended his hand to the guests. “I hope you had a nice time, Mr. Trevor. I’ll go over your proposal soon.”Mr. Trevor shook his hand. “Alright, Mr. Gray. I’ll be waiting.”Oscar gently took my hand and led me away from the group.“I think they’re gone,” he mumbled.“Gone? Who?” I asked, trying to keep my tone steady.“I wanted to introduce you to the kids—my little friends. It was meant to be a surprise,” he said softly. My heart paused. I had been avoiding him all night. What would happen when he found out the truth?“You were so busy, but this was the only chance I had to get you to meet them. They’re lovely, and I promise you’ll love them,” he continued.“Oh, Oscar, I can always meet your little friends another time.” My voice trembled slight
