Chapter 3

The door suddenly barged open. All fours of us watched as a guy with band aids decorating his gorgeous face stepped in.

He paused when he saw me,“What's going on here?” He asked in a deep voice, turning his gaze to the three guys.

“Dwayne?. You're alive?” Brown curl began to laugh, “I thought Chris finally ended you, I guess he spared you again.”

“I said, what's going on here, Steven Hart?” Dwayne marched forward, his dark hair cascading over his forehead.

“She's the one who came in here by herself,” Steve was the one with brown curls.

“Let her go!. Now!,” Dwayne had such a loud deep commanding voice, it vibrated throughout the bathroom.

“Or what?. We're not afraid of you anymore, if Chris can beat you, then so can we. Right guys?. C'mon, fight me Dwayne,” Steven balled his fist, daring Dwayne.

I watched as Dwayne took off his deep purple blazer and threw it at me, “Put that on.”

I caught it and quickly covered myself.

Dwayne missed the first punch from Steven.

“If Chris can wipe the floor with your face, so can I. You…” Steven was cut short as Dwayne punched him, he fell to the floor with a bloody nose, cursing loudly.

Steven’s friends exchanged looks and made a run for it.

“This isn't over Dwayne,” Steven pulled himself up and left.

“Are you okay?,” Dwayne asked me.

I nodded, “I could have totally handled that but thanks. It's my first day and I mixed up the bathrooms.”

“I'll show you where it is. What happened to your shirt?,” he pointed to my bloody shirt on the hand basin.

“Vanessa spilled a drink on me by accident” I grabbed the least bloody part.

“Vanessa?.” His handsome asian face twisted in anger, dark eyes becoming darker.

“Yeah.” I folded my shirt, walking towards the door.

“Then it wasn't an accident?” He trailed after me, wound disinfectant mixed with his cologne.

“She apologized and….”

“I know Vanessa and I know it wasn't an accident.” he opened the door for me.

“Well I don't know who you are so I can't trust what you say but thank you for saving me from Steven.” I walked out of the bathroom.

“Have I mentioned that Steven is Vanessa's brother?.”

My feet froze on the spot, Chris's words rang in my head, “Don't mess with me next time, princess.” Did he plan all this with Vanessa? And Steven?.

“And Vanessa is my ex-girlfriend, I know her better than anyone else,” his lips thinned as he said that.

“I'm sure it's probably just a coincidence. Are you okay though?. I sorta saw Chris and you in the morning….yunno…” he was definitely the guy Chris beat up.

“And you're the princess who saved me,” he said with a sigh, “I've seen the video. I owe you one. You can keep my blazer and I'll show you to the girls bathroom. Follow me.”

“I'm not a princess,” I said as he led me out of the bathroom, we'd barely walked three steps when we heard a girl shriek.

“Rebel. Princess,” Vanessa called, “We've been looking all over for you.”

“Yes,” Leslie and Maya said, suspiciously hiding their phones behind their backs.

“I'm not a princess,” I said.

“I just wanted to apologize again, I'm so sorry. Here's a fresh shirt to change into, you can use the dance squad locker room, there's a shower there too. Here's a spare key since I'm the captain, it's on the third floor opposite the senior's gym. I'm having a party tonight, you should totally come. Can I have your number?I'll text you the place and time. Here, Maya grabbed your bag for you.”

“Thanks, I will,” I took the key, shirt and my bag. I also gave her my number.

“I see you made a new friend too,” Vanessa winked towards Dwayne.

Dwayne looked like he wanted to murder Vanessa.

“I can find the locker room alright. Thanks for your help Dwayne,” I rushed away. I wouldn't want to get in anything between Dwayne and Vanessa or Chris.

School ended without any more drama, thank God. I read Vanessa's texts about the party details as I waited for the bus. I don't drive because of a particular reason.

“Need a ride?,” A motorcycle suddenly stopped in front of me.

Coffee dark eyes met mine, his familiar black hair covering one of his eyes underneath the helmet, his band aids weren't visible anymore, “Dwayne?.”

“Do princesses ride buses now?,”

“Last time I checked, prince charmings rides horses not motorcycles,” I scoffed.

“So you are a princess,” he handed me a white helmet.

“No I'm not,” I rolled my eyes.

“Great. Hop on then, Rebel,”

I arranged my long blonde hair behind my shoulder, “How do you know my name?.”

“You're trending on Maryville High gossip News. The princess who stood up to Lucifer himself.”

I scoffed as I arranged my skirt as I got on, holding on to his broad shoulders for support.

He started the motorcycle, “Where to?.”

I yelled the address into where I thought his ear would be and gave a squeak as he drove off at full speed, not stopping until we reached our destination.

“Thank you,” my face was flushed, my hair spiky, my heart beating fast as I handed him the helmet.

He eyed the mansion behind me, “You live here?.”

“Well no. My step mother does, I'm supposed to meet her with my dad today.”

“If she's a wicked step mother, it would absolutely complete the fairy tale right?.”

“Get outta here,” I laughed, waving him off.

“Hey. My family's restaurant is just outside this estate, you should come, we have a long list of menu for the entire world,” he told me.

“Sure” I gave him a small smile watching him zoom off. I took a deep breath and headed towards the fancy mansion.

This was the first time I was going to meet my dad's girlfriend, he met her on a work trip to Maryville, he's always going on work trips, never had time for me and Connor my brother, long story there.

Now after I got expelled and Connor's at a correction home, he moved me and him here for a fresh start. I only agreed because I never want to see Marcus again.

“Where’s my Dad?” I called out after a maid let me in.

“Mr Conklin and Miss Kane await you at the drawing room,” the female maid could only be a few years older than I am. Her deep blue eyes checked me out openly and I tried not to feel insecure.

“I'm Rebel,” I introduced as she led me towards the so-called drawing room.

“I'm Annie. I work here,”

“Nice to meet you Annie.” I said.

“Not mutual,” she whispered coldly.

Before I could answer, she added, “And here we are,” and turned away.

“Hey Dad!.” I called as I saw him seated at a table.

I sat across from Sean at the long dining table, scrolling through the tablet in front of me, "You have to be joking."He looked up from the tablet in his own hands, "About what?"I turned the screen to him, "This is today's schedule?""Yes."I scrolled again, there were meetings, calls, documents, appointments, more meetings, another call. Wait bunch of call with topics: Something involving a hotel, something involving a construction company.A meeting with the head of security. Calls with people whose names I couldn't pronounce. A discussion about a new shopping complex.I looked at him, "Do you actually do all of this?""Most days."I dropped the tablet onto the table and bluffed, "Most days. What happens on the other days?"He cleared his throat, "You'll find out."I didn't like the sound of that. The first thing Sean made me do was organize his morning meetings.Apparently, three people had already called to reschedule, two had requested private meetings, one had canceled, and a

The ride home felt endless. Nobody spoke. Susan sat perfectly still, her back straight, her jaw so tight I thought she might crack a tooth.I sat watching Maryville disappear behind us.Every minute gave my mind more time to replay everything that had happened.Academic dishonesty, they said!. Suspended, they said. Vanessa had framed me. She paid Mrs Holloway to frame me. My Dad had left without telling me. I closed my eyes. What a disaster!. The gates of the Kane mansion finally slid open. Sean parked the car in front of the entrance before turning off the engine.Susan was first to unbuckle her seatbelt. She stepped out briskly like seating beside me had been torture. Sean and I followed. The front door had barely closed behind us before Susan spun around.I instinctively braced myself. Here comes the lecture. She's going to yell, make accusations, tell me I'm a disappointment to my dad who's working hard for me to go to Maryville even though I didn't ask for it.Instead, she lo

The walk to the principal's office felt longer than it should have.Every step echoed through the nearly empty hallway, making my heartbeat sound even louder in my ears. What could this possibly be about?I mentally replayed everything I'd done since transferring to Maryville High.I hadn't skipped class. I hadn't gotten into a fight. I hadn't even talked back to a teacher. The woman from the principal's office stopped in front of a large wooden door. She knocked twice before opening it, “Rebecca is here.""Thank you, Mrs. Briggs. Come in Rebecca" the principal said. As I stepped inside, my stomach dropped immediately. Susan and Sean sat in front of the principal with a third seat beside Sean. The principal sat confidently on his seat while my calculus teacher stood beside him. Why was everyone looking so serious?Susan sat with perfect posture, dressed elegantly as always. Even seated, she somehow managed to radiate authority.Sean sat beside her in a charcoal suit, looking calm.

I woke up before my alarm could ring. I lay in bed staring at the ceiling for a few seconds, not remembering why I felt so uneasy and lost sleep quickly. Then it all came rushing back. The necklace Dwayne gave me, the party, me accidentally convincing Vanessa that Chris was secretly in love with her, Vanessa and Chris's argument. Vanessa's threat, “Game on.”I groaned into my pillow, "Happy Friday to me."I reached for my phone on the bedside table. There were no new messages from Ivy. I climbed out of bed and headed for the bathroom. The mirror greeted me with bed hair and dark circles."Lovely."After a quick shower, I wrapped myself in a towel and walked back into my room.I reached automatically for the long-sleeved undershirt I'd started wearing beneath my uniform. The scars, I almost forgot. My fingers lingered on my forearm for a second. The raised lines hid beneath my skin like memories that refused to disappear. I quickly pulled the sleeves into place before buttoning my

I couldn't stop smiling.I stared down at the little velvet box resting in Dwayne's palm before looking back up at him."...What's this?"He scratched the back of his neck, suddenly looking much less confident than the easygoing guy I'd been talking to moments ago."Open it."I carefully lifted the lid, a smile still playing at my lips. Inside the boy was lay a delicate silver necklace with a tiny crescent moon hung from the chain, wrapped around a small crystal that caught the fairy lights beautifully every time I moved it.I simply stared at the necklace. It was really pretty."It's beautiful” I commented. Dwayne stared back at me with a smile, "You like it?"I nodded. "I do” I dangled the pendant between my fingers. "It's adorable."He rubbed the back of his neck, "I saw it yesterday and it reminded me of you."My brows lifted, "Me?""You've had a rough few weeks. I figured everyone deserves something nice once in a while."My heart softened.Nobody had given me something simply

“The truth is, it was me…” I was so focused, I could hear Maya's breathing. She looked like she regretted opening her mouth at all.I didn't blame her. Whatever she was about to say had been eating her alive. She took one long shaky breath and finallylooked me in the eyes."The bathroom video and the slut princess nickname. Vanessa made me do it."I already guessed but I gasped anyways, "...What?""I recorded you coming out with Dwayne and Vanessa made me send it to her."Everything inside me seemed to stop, I wanted to ask why but I left her to finish. "She already had the video before everyone else, I edited it with the song and graphics.""No..." I gasped even though I already knew. I still wanted to ask disappointed. Maya nodded miserably, “I didn't want to do it but she made me.""And?"Maya wiped a lone tear from her eyes, "She said you deserved to know your place and that she's meant to be the most popular girl in Maryville."A cold feeling settled in my stomach, the fake co

“Where is everyone?” I muttered to myself, adjusting my back bag as I walked into my new school. The halls were completely empty, not a student in sight. Dad wasn’t alone. A woman sat opposite him, smiling warmly. She had long gray hair and bold green eyes, she sat confidently with her legs crossed.
