Dahlia

The silence between us was nothing compared to any I've ever been, it was heavy enough to choke on.

His hand stayed cupped against the back of my neck, his thumb tracing my pulse as if he were counting down the seconds until one of us completely lost control. His thumb rubbed the back of my neck in smaller circles leaving me stucked. The distance left between our mouths narrowed down to a single millimeter... just the phantom whisper of an invitation neither of us had the sanity to issue out loud. Every single nerve ending in my body screamed for our collision, begging for the sharp, reckless release of the tension building like an electric storm behind his dark eyes.

Then, with a sudden, rigid jerk of his jaw, Rafe pulled back.

He didn't step away entirely, but the tiny bit of distance he put between us felt like a physical blow to the gut. His broad chest rose and fell in a harsh, uneven wave, his jaw locked so tight the muscles pulsed beneath his skin as he stared down at me with an expression that looked almost unhinged.

"You scare me," he stated.

The words came out completely flat, stripped of every ounce of his usual arrogant bravado. They hung in the quiet, shadowed air of the room, heavy and raw, sounding so jarringly foreign coming from a man who practically owned half the nightmares in the city.

For a breathless heartbeat, I just stood there, completely paralyzed, caught entirely off guard by the sheer vulnerability of the confession. Then a dry, disbelieving laugh slipped past my lips, laced with all the frantic, hyperactive adrenaline still screaming through my veins.

"You?" I shook my head, my hands sliding off his arm to press flat against my own sides, needing the solid barrier of my own body to keep from leaning back into the heat of him. "Rafe, please. You look like the kind of guy who eats chaos for breakfast and sleeps like a baby afterward. You don't scare easily."

His dark eyes flared, a humorless, self-deprecating smirk briefly touching the corner of his mouth as he looked down at me like I was a puzzle he was dangerously close to solving.

"That's why it's a problem."

Before I could fire back a sarcastic retort to mask the way my stomach had just completely bottomed out, the floor beneath our feet gave a sudden, sickening shudder followed immediately by the unmistakable sound of splintering oak echoing from the main bedroom doorway we had locked behind us.

Rafe’s entire demeanor shifted in a microsecond, the raw intensity of our standoff instantly evaporating, replaced by a cold, lethal focus that made the blood run backward in my veins. The playful, dark romance of the past ten minutes vanished, swallowed whole by the brutal reality of the trap we were standing in.

"Could not even wait," Rafe muttered under his breath, his hand dropping away from my neck to reach down and check the heavy weapon tucked securely into the waistband of his lounge pants.

"Who?" I asked, though deep down, the jagged pieces of the puzzle were already clicking together in my mind. "Orin? Maelis's clean-up crew?"

"Worse," Rafe shot back, not even looking at me as he grabbed my wrist with an ironclad grip, pulling me swiftly away from the center of the room toward the hidden alcove in the masonry. "Family. And they brought something interesting I'm guessing."

The smell of smoke hit us then, thin and acrid at first, curling lazily under the bedroom door like a snake tasting the air, before rapidly thickening into a heavy, choking haze. The hallway outside wasn't just breached; it was burning.

"We can't go back out that way," I coughed, pulling the oversized sleeve of my cashmere sweater up over my nose and mouth as the first lick of amber light flickered underneath the doorframe.

"I wasn't planning on it," Rafe said darkly, his fingers finding the hidden spring behind the stone molding and pressing down with a sharp click.

The heavy stone panel swung inward, revealing a pitch-black, narrow vertical drop that smelled intensely of damp earth, old iron, and centuries of forgotten secrets. It didn't look like an escape route; it looked like an open grave.

"After you, darling," Rafe murmured, his voice dripping with that dangerous, cynical charm even as the fire roared louder behind us.

I didn't hesitate. I stepped off the edge into the dark.

The descent was a blur of rough stone scraping against my bare feet and the frantic, breathless scramble to keep my footing on the rusted iron rungs bolted into the damp chimney wall. Below us, the smoke trailed like a thin, gray ghost, but the air grew cooler, smelling faintly of stagnant river water and limestone.

"Keep moving!" Rafe’s voice echoed from just above me, muffled by the tight shaft. "Don't look down, Dahlia. Just keep your hands on the rungs... better still, you could keep them on me."

I was about to speak but his blunt eyes made me hold back. Every muscle in my arms felt like liquid fire, the oversized cashmere sleeves catching on the jagged edges of the brickwork as I hauled myself downward into the abyss.

My mind raced faster than my limbs, replaying the photograph, the faded handwriting, the medical report, and the raw, heavy weight of his words echoing in my head. He wasn't just playing a game with me anymore. We were both trapped in the crosshairs of something lethal, something that had started long before either of us was old enough to hold a weapon.

After what felt like hours of climbing blind in the suffocating dark, my feet finally struck solid, wet earth.

I stumbled forward, catching myself against a damp stone wall just as Rafe dropped down beside me with a quiet, controlled thud. The small, enclosed space smelled of moss and deep, subterranean isolation. Faintly, in the distance, the steady, rhythmic dripping of water echoed through what appeared to be an extensive network of old brick-lined utility tunnels.

"Where are we?" I asked, panting softly as I tried to peer through the gloom, my eyes slowly adjusting to the absolute lack of light.

"Below the west wing," Rafe replied, his voice a low gravel rasp right beside my ear. I felt the heat of his body before I saw him, his massive frame shielding me instinctively even down here in the dark. He pulled a small, heavy-duty flashlight from his pocket, clicking it on with a muted snap.

The beam cut through the thick, damp fog of the tunnel, illuminating rusted iron pipes running along the curved brick ceiling and muddy tracks leading off into the darkness.

"This service tunnel runs past the perimeter wall and straight out to the old boathouse by the lake," Rafe explained, flashing the light ahead to inspect the path. "If Orin set the fire to flush us out, he's expecting us to run for the main gates. Which means the gates are already locked, swarming, and waiting for targets."

"And the boathouse?"

"It's unguarded," Rafe said, a grim, humorless smile touching his mouth as he turned his dark gaze back to me. "Mostly because nobody in my family thinks anyone is crazy enough to swim across the freezing lake in the middle of a November thunderstorm."

"Try me," I muttered, shaking out my cramping hands and pulling my hair back into a tight knot. Despite the freezing dampness biting through my clothes, the adrenaline pumping through my veins kept the cold at bay. "I've survived worse than a little water."

"I have no doubt about that, Dahlia," Rafe murmured, stepping closer until the beam of his flashlight caught the sharp, defiant angle of my chin. His tone softened just a fraction, losing its tactical edge, turning into something raw and intensely personal in the dark. "You're a stubborn, reckless, beautiful disaster. Do you know that?"

"Save the flattery for my eulogy, Rafe," I shot back, though my heart did a traitorous little flip against my ribs. "Let's just get out of here before your family decides to drop a bomb down this flue too."

He let out a short, dark bark of laughter that bounced hollowly off the wet brick walls.

"Lead the way, then," he said, stepping aside just enough to let me take the lead into the tunnel, though his hand rested firmly, possessively, at the small of my back, guiding me forward into the shadows.

We moved fast through the labyrinth, the sound of our footsteps splashing against the shallow puddles the only noise breaking the subterranean silence. Every shadow cast by the erratic beam of the flashlight looked like a trap, every shift in the wind through the ventilation grates sounded like approaching footsteps. But we didn't slow down.

As we rounded a sharp curve in the tunnel, a faint, gray sliver of light appeared ahead—natural light filtering through heavy wooden slats. The boathouse.

"We're almost there," Rafe whispered, his hand sliding up from my lower back to catch my wrist, slowing my pace as we approached the exit.

Through the slats, I could see the furious white-capped waves of the lake lashing against the wooden pilings, the storm raging overhead with blinding sheets of rain. It looked terrifying, wild, and completely untamed—the exact mirror image of the man standing beside me.

Rafe reached out, pushing open the heavy, water-warped side door of the boathouse. The roar of the storm hit us like a physical wall, wet and freezing, washing away the smell of smoke and dust.

"Stay close to me," Rafe commanded over the wind, his dark eyes locking onto mine with an intensity that burned right through the darkness. "The second we hit that water, we don't stop swimming until we reach the far shore."

I nodded, stepping past him into the howling wind and the blinding rain, plunging straight into the storm with him right at my back.

DahliaA sharp, metallic sound exploded the quiet of the bedroom. I whipped around, staring at the door of the bedroom as if it had suddenly grown teeth. My hand flew out, catching Rafe’s forearm by sheer instinct, my fingers digging hard into skin that felt like sun-warmed iron. "Did someone just fucking lock us in?" I said confused, my voice dropping into a harsh, tight whisper that felt entirely too loud in the dead quiet of the room. "Your family. Orin, Maelis—one of them just..." Rafe's dark gaze stayed locked on my face, tracking every twitch of my pulse point jumping wildly beneath the skin of my throat. The panic clawing at my chest wasn't just about being trapped in a gothic cage with a man who collected secrets like playing cards; it was the suffocating realization that the walls we were inside were closing in. "Did something finally scare you," Rafe muttered, his voice a low, gravelly rumble that washed over me. He didn't pull away from my grip. If anything, he shifted

Dahlia The ink was faded, the blue-black cursive slightly smudged by time, but the words hit me like a physical blow to the chest. I stared at the margin, the handwriting swimming before my eyes until the letters blurred into a jagged smear of ink. My father had written that. I couldn't believe he'd possibly put that on a paoer. "What is this?" My voice came out as a brittle whisper, barely audible over the hum of the storm pressing against the tall glass windows. My fingers resting on the edge of the mahogany desk as if the wood were the only solid thing left in the room. "Where did you get this?" Rafe didn't answer immediately. The playful, dangerous heat that had hummed between us just moments ago vanished, replaced by a heavy, suffocating stillness. He stepped closer, the floorboards groaning softly beneath his weight, but he kept his distance, respecting the sudden, terrifying gulf that had opened between us. "Your darling father left it behind," Rafe said, his voice strip

Dahlia When the frantic heat of his mouth finally broke, the reality of the bedroom rushed back in like a freezing tide. Rafe rested his forehead against mine, his breathing ragged and uneven, his large hands still anchored firmly at my waist. For a second, the only sound was the distant, sullen rumble of the storm outside and the rhythm of my own heart beating against my ribs. Then, gently, I placed my hands flat against his bare chest and stepped back. The movement caught him off guard. A flicker of dark, restless hunger crossed his eyes, as if he expected me to stay pinned beneath him forever, but he let his arms drop away, taking a half-step back to give me space. "Stay here," he muttered, his voice a low, raspy command as he turned toward the ensuite bathroom to wash the mud and rain from his hands. The moment his back was turned, every instinct I had spent a lifetime burying flared to life. The oversized sweater swallowed my frame, the sleeves dangling past my hands, but I

Dahlia The door clicked shut behind us, sealing out the hollow echoes of the estate. The storm was still raging outside, beating against the reinforced glass of the tall windows, but inside, the air was warm, thick with the scent of cedar, damp wool, and the faint, expensive trace of Rafe’s cologne. My shoes left wet, muddy prints across the pristine hardwood floor as he set me down, but I didn't care. My legs felt hollow, the phantom drop of the cliffside still vibrating in the marrow of my bones. Rafe didn't let go of me immediately. His hands lingered on my waist, his fingers pressing through the soft knit of my sweater with a possessive, unyielding heat that reminded me I was entirely at his mercy. "Take those off," he murmured, his voice a low, gravelly hum against my skin as he gestured toward my damp denim. "You're freezing." "I don't need your clothes, Rafe," I shot back, though the defiance lacked its usual sharp edge, muffled by the shivering exhaustion creeping into my

Dahlia The headlights cut through the pitch-black darkness and blinding sheets of rain, illuminating the low, jagged granite wall and the vast, endless abyss waiting beyond it. Instinct took over before my brain could fully process the sheer terror of the moment. My feet abandoned the useless brake pedal, and my right hand slammed down onto the center console, wrapping around the emergency handbrake lever. I yanked it upward with everything I had. The mechanical cable snapped taut. The rear tires locked instantly, shrieking in violent protest against the wet, slick pavement. The heavy sedan snapped sideways, entering a sickening, uncontrollable fishtail at fifty miles an hour. The entire world turned into a dizzying, terrifying blur of blinding rain, dark looming pine trees, and flashing yellow emergency lights. The tire smoke filled the wheel wells with an acrid stench that leaked into the cabin. I threw my arms over my face, tucking my head down against the steering wheel as
