Chapter 1

Author: Brandy Branch
When my business trip finally ended, I came home and pushed open the door.

Frank Horton was sitting in the living room, laughing and chatting with Rachel Sullivan.

It was quiet by the door. My cat Pipi wasn't lying by the door, rolling around and acting spoiled to greet me like he usually did.

My heart tightened.

“Pipi?”

Only then did Frank turn around from the couch and give a faint, indifferent hum.

“Gone for a whole week, and the first thing you do when you come home is look for Pipi. Can’t you see we have a guest?

“Pipi isn't friendly toward Rachel, so I put him in his cage.”

I set down my suitcase and immediately went to the cat house to check on Pipi.

The little guy looked listless. He gently rubbed his head against my palm and let out a pitiful meow.

I crouched in front of the cat house and saw that there was another grape in the cat bowl in the corner.

“Pipi is very well-behaved. He never gets angry at people for no reason.”

I took out the cat bowl and dumped the cat food, grape and all, into the trash, gripping the rim so tightly my fingertips turned white.

“Unless that person means him harm.”

Rachel's face went pale, and her eyes instinctively turned to Frank for help.

Frank caught the signal and immediately frowned at me.

“Willow Newton, are you really going to keep harping on something this trivial?”

“Rachel was just messing around. She wanted Pipi to get used to the taste of grapes beforehand so he wouldn't accidentally eat one in the future. She was doing it for Pipi's own good.

“I'm Pipi's dad. Would I really hurt him?”

I didn't look at Frank. Instead, I turned around, went into the kitchen, and opened the refrigerator, preparing to make Pipi some cat food.

The three jars of pickles that had originally been in the refrigerator were gone.

In their place was a homemade cake, grape-flavored.

I lowered my head and saw that the three jars of pickles my mother had painstakingly made and sent me had already been thrown into the trash.

The glass jars had shattered, and the neatly cut cucumber strips, each one carefully prepared for easy consumption, were buried among the broken glass.

A sudden ache rose in my chest.

I remembered the phone call Dad had made a week ago.

“Willow, the cucumbers in our backyard have grown. They're so fresh and crisp.

“Your mom remembers that they're your favorite, so she pickled them and sent them to you. You don't like the seeds, so she specifically deseeded them all for you.

“You and Frank are busy with work, but don't forget to eat breakfast. Mom's pickles go best on sandwiches. When you were little, you could finish two whole sandwiches all by yourself.”

But the pickles my mother had carefully made and sent me—I hadn't even gotten to taste a single bite.

I turned around and walked out of the kitchen, looking at Frank and Rachel, who were sitting on the sofa, laughing and fooling around.

“Who threw out the pickles my dad sent me from the refrigerator?”

Rachel casually turned her head to look at me.

“Sorry, Willow. Your refrigerator is too small. I couldn't keep my handmade cake at room temperature, so I had to take out your pickles to make room for it.”

“It's all Frank's fault. When the house was being renovated, I said we should buy a French-door refrigerator, so I’d have room for more fruits, drinks, and other things I like. He refused and said you'd already decided on the kitchen layout, so it couldn't be changed. I had to make do.”

As she spoke, Rachel punched Frank, sounding as though she was either complaining or acting spoiled.

Frank had lost a lot of weight. He was wearing the coat I'd bought for him, only now it hung much more loosely on him.His eyes were slightly sunken, no longer possessing the handsome, polished air of the refined young man he'd once been.Standing in front of me, he'd lost the former elegance and composure. All that remained was caution. The former heir of the Hortons had even lost the halo that used to surround him.I pretended not to see him and continued toward the stairwell."Willow, can we talk?"I stopped and turned to look at him."What do you want to talk about?"Frank was silent for a moment."I want to apologize to you.""Rachel has developed depression. Whenever she sees me, she goes crazy and hits me. Her mother stays home to take care of her every day now. If she's not careful, Rachel might do something drastic."My mom and I had a huge fight. She thinks you've completely bewitched me and that I refuse to admit my mistakes. I haven't gone home in a long time."

Xavier was typing, and a series of professional analyses followed one after another. Two minutes later, he sent another message."Typing is a hassle. There's a café downstairs from my law firm. Would you be available to meet there and talk, Ms. Newton?"I thought for a moment before replying, "Sure."Half an hour later, I met Xavier at the café.He was dressed in a suit, looking composed and refined, and gave me a slight nod."Hello, Ms. Newton."We shook hands, and I couldn't shake the feeling that I'd seen him somewhere before. After talking things over with Xavier, I handed Pipi's case over to him completely. The next time we met was at the police station, when Rachel asked to see me.Xavier accompanied me to meet her. The moment she saw me, she grabbed my hand and pleaded with me."Willow, I know I was wrong. I really am sorry!"I was completely out of my mind before. I thought it wouldn't be a big deal! I'm willing to return everything I earned to you, and I'll compens

"Frank, I'm warning you. I've already installed security cameras. If you show up at my house again, I'll call the police."I took a step back into the house, my face full of disgust."Today, I'll be notifying my family. I hope you also make sure your family understands that I don't want another situation like today, where your mother calls to lecture me about how I should 'know better.'"Otherwise, don't blame me if I say some unpleasant things."Frank's face went pale."My mom contacted you?"I'm sorry. I didn't know..."I let out a cold laugh."You didn't know? Don't you know what your mother is like? You went to her and exaggerated all the things I've supposedly done wrong. Did you really think she could sit back and do nothing?"Frank was speechless.Of course he knew. He'd simply wanted to use the pressure from Olivia to force me to back down."Willow, this is all my fault. I didn't handle any of this properly."But isn't this doing too much damage to Rachel? She's jus

"Thank goodness, Willow. You finally picked up!"Olivia Horton’s voice sounded exhausted. "Frank told me everything that happened yesterday."Frank and Rachel were in the wrong. That whole 'Limited-Time Pre-Wedding Girlfriend Experience Card' was absolutely ridiculous!"Willow, don't be angry. I'll bring Frank and Rachel over to apologize to you in person. I promise we won't let Rachel do anything inappropriate or cross any lines again."As for your cat, I heard about that, too. Nothing happened to him, did it?"A cat isn't a person. What Rachel did was certainly inappropriate, but you can't make a girl face criminal charges over that cat.‘That cat,’ I thought. That was the only impression Olivia had of Pipi.Never mind that nothing had happened. Even if something had happened, he was still just a cat. There was no way he could compare to Rachel."Olivia, my grandmother went with me to get this cat before she passed away. Pipi is what she left behind for me to remember her by

There was a brief silence on the other end of the line. Before he could say anything, I hung up.I contacted a veterinary hospital I was familiar with and took Pipi in for a checkup that night.Although Pipi wasn't as energetic as he used to be, thankfully, there was nothing wrong with his physical health."We recommend spending more time with your pets when you’re not working. They're lonely at home, too."To think there are actually people who would exploit someone else's pet to make a quick buck. She should be punished to the fullest extent."The veterinarian I knew kept reassuring me and even gave me a bag of Pipi's favorite freeze-dried yogurt treats. On the drive home, Pipi curled up sleepily in the passenger seat, tired but content and purring peacefully. It was as if he knew he was finally completely safe.Caryn was holding him, and she gently stroked his head, her heart aching for him."Look what they've put Pipi through. Poor Pipi. My heart just breaks for you."I g

When I arrived at the address, I frantically pounded on the buyer's door until it opened. From inside came Pipi's heart-wrenching cries.I rushed over. Inside the room, Rachel was holding Pipi down and forcing medicine into his mouth.“You little bast*rd, can't you do something useful? Once you breed her, that's two thousand bucks!”“Your dad gives you the best food and takes such good care of you. It's time you earned your keep!”I immediately shoved Rachel aside and bent down to scoop Pipi into my arms, my heart aching for him.The police arrived soon after and took Rachel into custody.“Hello. We received a report that you entered a private residence and stole property of significant value. You'll need to come with us to the station for questioning.”Rachel struggled wildly.“This isn't burglary! I'm the homeowner's girlfriend. Willow, hurry and explain it to them!”I watched coldly as she was taken away, nothing but disgust in my eyes.“Rachel, I'll hold you fully accoun
