Chapter 2

Author: Brandy Branch
“And, Willow, take my advice.

“Young people like us shouldn't be eating processed foods packed with sodium and preservatives. It’s terrible for your health and can even cause sudden death.

“Your parents already have one foot in the grave, so eating more of it won't matter as much.

“You just got engaged to Frank. If you eat too much of this stuff, you might not even be able to get pregnant. Even if you don't think about yourself, you should think about Frank. You can't let your parents end up without any grandkids.”

I stood to the side with a cold expression, just about to lose my temper.

But Rachel suddenly picked up a paper bag and walked over to me with a bright smile.

“Willow, this is my engagement gift for you. See if you like it.”

Inside the paper bag were two boxes of folic acid.

“Willow, you're not that young anymore. If you get pregnant, you'll be an older expectant mother. While you still have time, you should take more folic acid. Then your baby will be healthy when you get pregnant later.

“I can't wait to be the godmother.”

I pushed her hand away.

“No need.”

The paper bag in Rachel's hand suddenly fell to the floor, and the two bottles of folic acid tumbled out.

Seeing this, Frank’s expression immediately turned cold.

He took Rachel's hand and stood beside her, naturally taking her side without hesitation, as if he'd completely forgotten that I was the one he was supposed to protect.

“Willow Newton, what kind of spoiled rich-girl attitude are you pulling?

“Rachel meant well. She put thought into choosing this gift, and this is how you treat her?”

I looked at the two bottles of folic acid on the floor and gave a soft laugh.

I opened the neighbourhood group chat on my phone, pulled up the conversation, and held it out in front of Frank.

“A thoughtfully chosen gift? Isn't this just the health supplement from the pharmacy downstairs that's being sold at a discount because it's nearing its expiration date?”

I looked at the price list the pharmacy employee had posted in the group chat and laughed in disbelief.

“Sixty-eight dollars for two boxes. Rachel, you really went all out.”

Rachel's face went pale, and she instinctively grabbed Frank's hand.

“Frank, I didn't know…”

Frank looked somewhat embarrassed.

“Enough, Willow. Do you really have to make such a fuss?

“Rachel's gift may not be expensive, but she put her thought into it. She only bought you something because she was thinking about you.”

“So what if the folic acid cost sixty-eight dollars? Didn't you buy one of those nine-ninety snack sampler packs online for Pipi yourself?

“You've always treated Pipi like your own son, haven't you? If he can eat a nine-ninety sampler pack, why can't you take sixty-eight dollars worth of folic acid?”

I stood there in stunned disbelief.

I couldn't believe that the man who had once cherished me in the palm of his hand, who wouldn't even let me sip on a hot drink until he'd blown on it to cool it down, could say something so hurtful to me.

I took a deep breath, utterly exhausted.

“Frank, do you also think all I'm worth is some discounted health supplements that are about to expire and cost sixty-eight dollars?”

Frank froze. When he saw the hurt in my eyes, his first instinct was to explain himself.

“Willow, that's not what I meant.”

The air between us was tense. Pipi jumped out of the cat house, stopped beside my feet, and worriedly rubbed against my pant leg.

Frank took out a gift box, opened it, and held it out to me.

“Willow, let's not argue anymore, okay?

“There are so many things to deal with before the wedding. I know you're under a lot of pressure, so I specifically picked out a gift for you while I was away on my business trip.”

I looked at the delicate gold four-leaf clover necklace lying inside the box and was just about to feel touched.

Then I lowered my eyes and noticed a matching bracelet in a different color on Rachel's wrist.

“Frank, you really put a lot of thought into your gifts. You made sure neither your fiancée nor your female friend was left out.”

Frank had lost a lot of weight. He was wearing the coat I'd bought for him, only now it hung much more loosely on him.His eyes were slightly sunken, no longer possessing the handsome, polished air of the refined young man he'd once been.Standing in front of me, he'd lost the former elegance and composure. All that remained was caution. The former heir of the Hortons had even lost the halo that used to surround him.I pretended not to see him and continued toward the stairwell."Willow, can we talk?"I stopped and turned to look at him."What do you want to talk about?"Frank was silent for a moment."I want to apologize to you.""Rachel has developed depression. Whenever she sees me, she goes crazy and hits me. Her mother stays home to take care of her every day now. If she's not careful, Rachel might do something drastic."My mom and I had a huge fight. She thinks you've completely bewitched me and that I refuse to admit my mistakes. I haven't gone home in a long time."

Xavier was typing, and a series of professional analyses followed one after another. Two minutes later, he sent another message."Typing is a hassle. There's a café downstairs from my law firm. Would you be available to meet there and talk, Ms. Newton?"I thought for a moment before replying, "Sure."Half an hour later, I met Xavier at the café.He was dressed in a suit, looking composed and refined, and gave me a slight nod."Hello, Ms. Newton."We shook hands, and I couldn't shake the feeling that I'd seen him somewhere before. After talking things over with Xavier, I handed Pipi's case over to him completely. The next time we met was at the police station, when Rachel asked to see me.Xavier accompanied me to meet her. The moment she saw me, she grabbed my hand and pleaded with me."Willow, I know I was wrong. I really am sorry!"I was completely out of my mind before. I thought it wouldn't be a big deal! I'm willing to return everything I earned to you, and I'll compens

"Frank, I'm warning you. I've already installed security cameras. If you show up at my house again, I'll call the police."I took a step back into the house, my face full of disgust."Today, I'll be notifying my family. I hope you also make sure your family understands that I don't want another situation like today, where your mother calls to lecture me about how I should 'know better.'"Otherwise, don't blame me if I say some unpleasant things."Frank's face went pale."My mom contacted you?"I'm sorry. I didn't know..."I let out a cold laugh."You didn't know? Don't you know what your mother is like? You went to her and exaggerated all the things I've supposedly done wrong. Did you really think she could sit back and do nothing?"Frank was speechless.Of course he knew. He'd simply wanted to use the pressure from Olivia to force me to back down."Willow, this is all my fault. I didn't handle any of this properly."But isn't this doing too much damage to Rachel? She's jus

"Thank goodness, Willow. You finally picked up!"Olivia Horton’s voice sounded exhausted. "Frank told me everything that happened yesterday."Frank and Rachel were in the wrong. That whole 'Limited-Time Pre-Wedding Girlfriend Experience Card' was absolutely ridiculous!"Willow, don't be angry. I'll bring Frank and Rachel over to apologize to you in person. I promise we won't let Rachel do anything inappropriate or cross any lines again."As for your cat, I heard about that, too. Nothing happened to him, did it?"A cat isn't a person. What Rachel did was certainly inappropriate, but you can't make a girl face criminal charges over that cat.‘That cat,’ I thought. That was the only impression Olivia had of Pipi.Never mind that nothing had happened. Even if something had happened, he was still just a cat. There was no way he could compare to Rachel."Olivia, my grandmother went with me to get this cat before she passed away. Pipi is what she left behind for me to remember her by

There was a brief silence on the other end of the line. Before he could say anything, I hung up.I contacted a veterinary hospital I was familiar with and took Pipi in for a checkup that night.Although Pipi wasn't as energetic as he used to be, thankfully, there was nothing wrong with his physical health."We recommend spending more time with your pets when you’re not working. They're lonely at home, too."To think there are actually people who would exploit someone else's pet to make a quick buck. She should be punished to the fullest extent."The veterinarian I knew kept reassuring me and even gave me a bag of Pipi's favorite freeze-dried yogurt treats. On the drive home, Pipi curled up sleepily in the passenger seat, tired but content and purring peacefully. It was as if he knew he was finally completely safe.Caryn was holding him, and she gently stroked his head, her heart aching for him."Look what they've put Pipi through. Poor Pipi. My heart just breaks for you."I g

When I arrived at the address, I frantically pounded on the buyer's door until it opened. From inside came Pipi's heart-wrenching cries.I rushed over. Inside the room, Rachel was holding Pipi down and forcing medicine into his mouth.“You little bast*rd, can't you do something useful? Once you breed her, that's two thousand bucks!”“Your dad gives you the best food and takes such good care of you. It's time you earned your keep!”I immediately shoved Rachel aside and bent down to scoop Pipi into my arms, my heart aching for him.The police arrived soon after and took Rachel into custody.“Hello. We received a report that you entered a private residence and stole property of significant value. You'll need to come with us to the station for questioning.”Rachel struggled wildly.“This isn't burglary! I'm the homeowner's girlfriend. Willow, hurry and explain it to them!”I watched coldly as she was taken away, nothing but disgust in my eyes.“Rachel, I'll hold you fully accoun
