Chapter 4

Finally, the day Ingrid had been waiting for arrived.

I woke up early on purpose to dress up nicely. I even put on some makeup.

I wanted to look radiant while witnessing Ingrid's impending humiliation.

Gordon had invited the entire Grant family, including Rose, to the lab to witness the results as soon as they came out. He probably wanted as many people there as possible to witness my humiliation.

How naïve.

He wanted to make a joke out of me, not knowing that he was the biggest tool in the shed.

Before seeing the results, I asked Gordon with a smirk, "You chose this lab yourself. You won't have any objections to the results, would you?"

Gordon straightened and said confidently, "Of course not! I always keep my word!"

I almost laughed out loud.

What a stubborn mule.

The staff at the research lab had yet to return with our results, but Ingrid had already started her act.

She linked her arm through Gordon's and leaned against his shoulder, saying daintily, "Once the results are out, our family will finally be reunited."

She even gave me a taunting look.

I ignored her and turned to Ella.

Sure enough, Ella's face was cold and distant as well. She, too, ignored Ingrid.

The lack of reaction made Ingrid look awkward, but she quickly regained her composure and said to Ella, "I'll be your mother from now on. You can ask me if you need anything."

Then, she took out a small jewelry box from her purse and handed it to Ella. "I bought you a necklace as a gift. Take a look and see if you like it."

Ella didn't even look at it. "I don't need it," she said coldly.

Ingrid's smile froze on her face.

Gordon quickly tried to smooth things over. "Ella, your mother means well…"

"I don't need her kindness," Ella interrupted. "I only have one mother. Her name is Eden Bergman."

A surge of warmth enveloped my heart.

My daughter would always stand by me.

Just then, the staff returned with three reports.

Ingrid, Gordon, and David perked up, their eyes glued to the documents in the staff's hands.

They looked like wolves who had spotted prey.

The three of them were confident, as if they’d already won and I was about to be thoroughly humiliated while they would live in lavishness.

I could barely hold in my laughter.

The staff opened the envelope containing the test results. Ingrid's breathing grew rapid.

Her red nails dug into Gordon's arm.

Gordon was trembling as well, his face flushed with excitement. He kept muttering, "We'll soon be reunited as a family, Ella!"

I saw him glance at me disdainfully as if I was just a loser.

Ingrid was even more dramatic. Her entire body was shaking. "I've finally proven myself, Ella!"

David, proving himself an idiot once again, strode over to Ella. "Ella, when we go back to the company later, make me the general manager! I'm your biological brother. I'm the only one who will genuinely help you!"

He spoke as if Ella helping him was the most natural thing in the world, like the position was already his.

I scoffed at their ridiculous display.

They wouldn't realize who the real clowns were until the last moment.
