LOGINThe deal was simple. Fake-date Tyson Blackwood, the campus's most insufferable Alpha, hockey captain and the man personally responsible for my first heartbreak, or watch my scholarship disappear overnight. He needed a girlfriend to make his ex jealous and I needed to stay enrolled. So we shook on it. Terms stated cold and clean: no feelings, no complications, strictly business. The no feeling part was going great. Right up until my heat hit, his rut triggered, and we spent five days in his suite while his rut burned through every wall between us. Now he's looking at me differently. His scent patch fails everytime I walk into a room and the pack that spent years treating me like a joke is watching the hockey captain lose his mind. The hockey captain who chose me as a pawn is now knotting me like I'm the only thing he's ever wanted to keep.

"Okay, can you believe what I just heard?"
Charlotte's voice hit me before she even fully caught up, her sneakers squeaking against the corridor floor as she fell into step beside me.
"Good morning to you too," I shifted my bag higher on my shoulder and kept walking.
"You won't believe what I found out," she was breathless, her bag falling off one shoulder. "Tyson and Skylar are done, over. It happened three days ago, apparently."
"Okay." I kept walking.
"Okay?" She stared at me. "Roxie, they were literally the couple of the year. Everyone was talking about it at the east wing and Skylar is already out here posting photos with Hayden Cross well like Tyson was a limited edition she outgrew."
"Good for her," I said and kept moving.
Charlotte jogged two steps to keep up. "That's it? That's your whole reaction?"
"What do you want from me, Charlie?" I turned the corner toward the sciences corridor, dodging someone's backpack. "You've been my friend for years and you still don't understand that some people simply do not care about Tyson Blackwood's love life. Some people have actual problems."
She kept up with me easily, which was annoying because she was wearing platform sneakers. "You're not even a little bit interested?"
"Nope." My voice was deadpan.
"Aren't you even a little bit curious?" She asked.
"Charlie..."
"Because the way Skylar moved on that fast was..."
"He deserved it." I shifted my bag strap. "He's been overdue for that for a long time. Karma finally showed up."
Charlotte went quiet for a long moment, which for her was basically a record. We turned into the main hallway, people coming across in every direction.
"You know," she said finally. "I really don't understand why you hate him so much."
I stopped walking and just looked at her.
She blinked. "What?"
"Charlie." I stared at her. "Seriously?"
She spread her hands. "What? I'm just saying..."
"Charlie." I cut her off. "The guy is a jerk and a bully. He's been a bully since we were literally twelve years old and you've watched him be like this."
"I mean, yeah, he can be..."
"He's not can be, he just is." I started walking again. "He's always been that way and everyone acts like it's some personality quirk instead of him just being plain terrible."
"Okay," she made a face. "But a lot of people are awful when they're younger and get better."
"He didn't get better." I laughed once. "Trust me."
She was quiet again, but a different kind of quiet this time. It was like a thinking quiet and I did not like it.
"Is this still about what happened with David?" She asked carefully.
My jaw tightened and kept quiet.
"I'm not trying to start anything, I just..."
"Charlie." My voice came out flat. "You know what happened with me and David and you know Tyson is the reason it went the way it did."
She opened her mouth, then closed it. "I mean...not really."
"It doesn't matter." I said. "It was months ago, it's over, and I really don't care anymore. The point is he's a jerk, he's always been a jerk, and has spent years making my life harder than it needed to be and he's always walking around this school like he personally owns the air in it, so yeah, I'm thrilled he finally got a taste of something he didn't ask for."
Charlotte rolled her eyes. "You say you don't care and yet you have very detailed opinions about..."
"I care about my Healing and Herbalism assignment that I have not finished." I shot her a look. "Plus, my suppressants, which I'm almost out of. Those are the things I care about."
"How much do you have left?" She asked.
"Like... three left." I said.
"You need to refill your suppressants," She said. "If you run out mid-week your scent's gonna be everywhere and you know how people get around here.''
"I have an appointment on Friday." I said.
"That's four days away." Her voice rose slightly.
"I'm aware, thanks." My voice was flat.
"I'm just saying." She said. "With the territory assessments coming up next week, everyone's already on edge. The last thing you need is..."
"I will be fine, Charlie." I looked at her. "I've managed before."
"You've complained about managing before," she looked at me. "You literally said last time that you could feel people noticing."
"I was just being dramatic." I said.
"That's my thing, when you said something you mean it." She tugged her bag back up her shoulder. "I'm just saying, maybe call and ask if they have an earlier slot."
"I'll think about it." I sighed.
"That means no." She shook her head slightly.
"That mean I'll think about it." I cut around a group of people standing in the middle of the corridor. "I'm more worried about the assignment. I still have finished the section on lunar-cycle herb and Professor Maxwell specifically said she was going to ask follow-up questions this time."
"You'll be fine." She gave a small smile. "You're always fine with Herbalism."
"I'm fine because I actually do the reading," I said. "Which takes time, which I don't have when I'm also worrying about..."
"Suppressants." She cut me off.
"I was going to say assessment prep, but sure, add that to the list too."
Charlotte smiled a little. "When's the assignment due?"
I groaned. "Today."
"Roxie..."
"I'm going to finish it before class." I checked the time on my phone. "I have like twenty something minutes."
"That's not enough time to..."
"It's fine, I write fast when I'm panicking." I dropped my phone back in my pocket.
She stared at me.
"Stop looking at me like that."
"I'm just..."
"I know, I'm a disaster." I grabbed her arm and steered us around the corner, cutting toward the main corridor. "I'll fix the assignment, I'll sort the suppressants, everything is fine..."
I walked straight into something solid and lost the rest of the sentence entirely.
I stepped back fast, grabbed my bag strap before it swung off my shoulder, and looked up.
He was taller than I always somehow forgot. Tyson Blackwood looked down at me with those green eyes, unhurried and not bothered.
Behind me, Charlotte had gone completely silent.
"Hey, Pumpkin." He smirked. "I've been looking for you."
Roxanne's POV I found a table near the back of the library and sat down and opened my notes and stared at them.My wolf was still loud. The warmth from this morning was still there, sitting quietly between my shoulders, and Tyson's concerned face was sitting somewhere in my chest where I kept putting things I wasn't ready to look at directly.I'd been in the library for twenty minutes when my phone buzzed.Charlotte: have you heard about Skylar and Hayden Me: No what happenedCharlotte: They had a public argument last night apparently. people saw them and he left alone. word is they're done or close to it.I put the phone face down on the table and looked at my notes. So it was working.Six weeks of performing and Skylar was cracking and her relationship with Hayden was showing the fractures and the plan was doing exactly what it was built to do. This was the win. Tyson getting what he wanted.I picked up my pen and put it back down.My phone buzzed again, I looked at it.Charlotte:
Roxanne's POV I woke up hot.My body was warm in a way that didn't match the room temperature, like my body had decided to run at a different setting overnight without consulting me. I kicked the blanket off and lay there staring at the ceiling for a minute. My wolf was already awake. That was the first weird thing. She was usually quiet in the mornings, slow to surface, taking her time. This morning she was just, present. Alert and sitting forward like she'd been up for a while and had been waiting for me to catch up.What's wrong with you, I told her.She didn't answer, just stayed forward.I sat up and looked at the nightstand. The suppressant bottle only had two pills left. My appointment was in three days and I was already rationing and the bottle was nearly empty. The warmth probably nothing, stress did things to body temperature, last night had been a lot. The dinner, the walk back, everything Tyson said in the corridor.I got up."You look terrible," Charlotte said from her b
Tyson's POV Ryder was still up.I could see the light under his door from the corridor, which meant he'd either been waiting or he'd known I'd come here after. I knocked once and pushed it open without waiting. He was on his bed with his laptop, which he closed immediately when he saw my face."How did it go?" he asked."Worse than I expected." I dropped into the chair by his desk and sat back. "He called her an orphan who was trying to attach herself to use me."Reid stared at me. "He said that.""At the dinner table." I looked at the ceiling. "Your dad really has issues with his mouth." He said."He has issues with his personality." I said flatly. "I told him this was the reason why my mother left." I exhaled. "Then things got heated and I walked out."Ryder was quiet for a moment. "With Roxanne.""Yeah." I said. "She had to take me out or it was going to turn to a punching match."He looked at me carefully. "How is she?""She held up better than most people would." I pressed my k
Roxanne's POV We were outside and the cold hit us and neither of us said anything for a full minute.Just walked. Side by side, the academy building falling away behind us, the campus quiet at this hour."I'm sorry," I said finally. He looked at me sideways. "For what.""You just had a screaming match with your father in a formal dining room." I pulled my jacket tighter. "Because of me.""That fight was twenty years in the making." He looked straight ahead. "You just happened to be in the room.""He's way crueler than I expected," I said."He really doesn't know how to control himself," His jaw was tight. "He's been doing it my whole life. He picks the word that lands the hardest and he delivers it nicely and then he waits." He shook his head. "Tonight you got orphan who attached herself. Last year I got disappointment disguised as potential. The year before that my mother would have wanted better.""He seems like someone who's never satisfied," I looked at him."Yeah he is," He kep
Roxanne's POV The formal dining room was in the east wing of the main academy building. A room I had walked past a hundred times without ever going in, because rooms like that weren't for people like me. Tyson held the door and I went in. Cyrus Blackwood was already seated. I had seen him at
Charlotte's POV I was coming back from the laundry room when I spotted Roxanne turning the corner from the direction of the Alpha residential block. "Hey" I fell into step beside her. "How did it go?" "Informative." She glanced at me. "The meeting got moved to Friday. His father pushed it forwar
Roxanne's POV The pasta was really good. I didn't say that out loud immediately because I had some dignity left, but it was good and I was eating it with the focused appreciation of someone who had been living on dining hall food for four years and knew the difference. "Where is Alice?" I looke
Roxanne's POV Alice opened the door before I knocked. "She's here," she announced, to no one in particular, and stepped back to let me in. "It's past seven." "I'm not late," I said. "You're not early either." She took my jacket. "He's in the sitting room. Dinner in forty minutes." "Is it past
