Sheila looks as surprised as me for a few seconds before getting up to follow her brother-in-law, closing both doors of the dinning room behind her so I don’t have to hear whatever rude things Alpha Robert is saying about me right now.

I drop the spoon onto the plate and cover my face with my hands for a few seconds.

God, everything was going so well.

"What happened?" Beau asks next to me, confused and his chin completely dirty from the soup. I grab a napkin to wipe it off as I take a deep breath.

"I don't know, Buba," I admit, considering going back to our room and calling Theodore to tell him what just happened and ask if I should leave the house or something, but before I can, Sheila returns. On her own, "Is he okay?"

"He is," she returns to her seat and sighs, "Please, excuse him. It's... it's hard for him, seeing his wife's ring on someone else."
