Brenda’s POV

I watched him slip out the east gate.

Again.

The black cloak fooled everyone else. It didn't fool me. I would know the filthy shape of that omega anywhere. Even hunched. Even trying to be small.

Ashton.

My teeth ached from smiling at the guards. “His Majesty is sleeping,” I said sweetly. “Mara told me not to disturb him. I’m just checking the herb gardens.”

They let me pass. Idiots.

The snow was melting. It made everything smell like wet earth, rot and lies.

Ashton’s POVThe trees were not thick enough to hide in, but they were all I had. I pulled the child down behind the trunk and pressed us both to the bark, my arms locked around him because if he made a sound we would not make it out of these woods. His small body shook against me, and the snow soaked through my cloak and into my knees. The footsteps were close. They cut through the quiet like knives, and each one landed in my chest.Behind us, the door of the cottage slammed open.I did not turn. I already knew who it was.“Where did he go,” Brenda said. Her voice carried over the snow, sharp and annoyed.Lord Merrick answered her. “We wasted time coming here. You should have listened to me.”“My intel never fails,” Brenda said. “I know Ashton was out here. Check around.”The child in my arms made a broken sound. I covered his mouth with my hand before he could cry, and I shook my head against his hair. He understood. He nodded once, tears hot on my palm. The footsteps moved closer.

Ashton’s POVEverything in the chamber felt like it was closing in. The soft glow of the moon made me uneasy. It had been days since I left this room. Days since the last time the baby’s power had reacted violently. Since then, nothing had happened. The baby had been quiet, and that was what scared me more than the pain.I had not seen Zeth. Xander made sure of that.He was in the room every morning and every night, sitting in the same chair, watching me with eyes that were careful and distant in a way they had not been before.Ever since I said Zeth’s name in my sleep, something had shifted between us. He still said he loved me. He still kissed me, but he did not look at me the same. The guards outside the door did not move. Mara came twice a day with tea and with food and with the same soft smile that did not reach her eyes.I sat on the edge of the bed and pressed my hands to my stomach. The baby was there. I could feel him, but underneath the weight of him there was something else

Lord Void’s POVThe chamber held its breath. Stone walls were cold and the black candles burned without flame, giving light that did not warm anything.I stood before the mirror because the mirror was the only place the god would speak to me without making the rest of the fortress kneel. My reflection was not mine. Where my face should have been there was only shadow, a depth of black that had no edges and no bottom. It filled the glass and spilled past the frame. The Dark Moon God.The voice came from inside the glass. “You are wasting time,” it said. The tone was patient the way a predator is patient, which meant it was not patient at all.“Destroy the Aurion wolves,” the dark told me. “Destroy the Noctaryn wolves. Break them before they remember they once stood together and called it peace.”The shadow in the mirror shifted, and for a moment I thought I saw teeth that were not teeth. “You will make more of the Crescent,” it continued. “More teeth, more hunger. Let the continent dr

Ashton’s POVI woke to a weight pressing on my chest and the taste of metal in my mouth. The room was dim and the fire had burned low. For a long time I did not know if I was still in the snow or if that had been a dream. My body hurt in a way that felt deep, like the ache had settled into my bones.Xander was sitting in the chair beside the bed.He had his elbows on his knees and his head down, and he did not look up when I shifted. He did not look angry. He looked like a man trying very hard not to break something.I tried to push myself up and pain cut through me immediately.“Don’t,” Xander said, his voice was sharp enough to make me stop. “The healers said you are stressed,” he told me. “That is why the contractions started. So stay down.”I let myself fall back against the pillows. “I am fine,” I said, though my voice came out rough. He still did not look at me. Then he did, and the words he said next landed like a stone. “You said Zeth’s name in your sleep.”The room went quiet

Brenda’s POVThe glass hit the wall and shattered.I watched it fall. Watched the wine drip down the stone like blood and felt nothing.Nothing except the heat in my chest that would not go out. He shut me up in front of everyone, and then he carried him... That stupid Ashton like he was made of glass. That should have been me. Not that thing. Not that whore with his thing in his bloody belly.I picked up another glass from the table and threw it. It hit the floor and exploded into a hundred pieces. The sound was satisfying, but it was not enough.A soft knock cut my attention. Hell no.“Brenda?” My mother called out.“Leave me alone.”The door opened anyway. She stood there in her sleeping gown, face tired and old in the candlelight.“Stop this,” she said. “You’re going to cut yourself. You’re going to get blood on the carpets.”I laughed. “Then buy new carpets.”She stepped inside and closed the door behind her.“Give it up,” she said. “Come back to the estate. Stay here. You lost.

  • Omega of Two Packs   The Weight of Him

Xander’s POVI opened my eyes to white. Snow was in my mouth and in my hair and coating my lashes. For one second I did not know where I was or what had happened. One second I had a sword in my hand and Zeth’s throat under it.The next I was on the ground. I pushed myself up on my elbows and the world tilted. My ears were ringing. Ashton’s voice was still in my head, broken and raw, shouting my name right before the light came. Ashton. I was on my feet before I could think. The snow around me was disturbed, kicked up and melted in patches. The guards were already pushing themselves up, cursing under their breath. Brenda was brushing snow from her dress.Zeth was standing too, steady, brushing his sleeve off like he had not just been thrown ten feet by whatever had just happened. And Ashton was still on the ground. Not moving. Something cold dropped through my chest. I ran. I did not care about the sword or the guards or Zeth watching me. I dropped to my knees beside A
