Slowly, Ava lifted her head.

Louis stood ten feet away, dressed casually but expensively, with a stunning petite woman clinging to his arm — long curls, red lipstick, the kind of girl who looked like she walked out of a glossy magazine.

He froze when he saw her.

Ava’s stomach dropped.

His eyes widened. “What the hell are you doing here? This hotel is like forty minutes from campus.”

A thousand excuses flashed through her mind, but none made it to her lips.

Louis took a few steps forward, confusion turning to suspicion as he looked her up and down — the messy hair she tried to tame, the rumpled traveling bag at her feet, the faint redness around her lips she hadn’t noticed.

The woman at his side raised a brow, eyeing Ava with interest.

Louis frowned deeper. “Ava… who are you meeting here?”

She opened her mouth — but nothing came out.

Louis stared at her like she was a puzzle piece that didn’t fit. Then his eyes shifted past her, toward the elevators. His jaw clenched.

  • On My Professor's Desk   CHAPTER FORTY THREE

The motel parking lot was almost empty.A single streetlamp flickered near the entrance, casting long shadows across the cracked pavement as Camille stepped out of the cab. The night air was cool, sharp against her skin, but it did nothing to calm the heat burning in her chest.Suncrest Motel. The name glared back at her from the faded sign.Who could Ava be meeting here? Her heart pounded as she walked toward the building, each step heavier than the last. She half-hoped—no, prayed—that this was all a misunderstanding. That Ava had a reasonable explanation. That the card meant nothing. But deep down, Camille already knew. She climbed the stairs to the second floor slowly, her fingers tightening around the motel card. Room numbers blurred past her eyes until she stopped.225.Her pulse spiked. For a long moment, she just stood there, staring at the door. Listening. Her heart thundered so loudly she was sure someone inside could hear it.If you knock, she told herself, everything change

The knock came again—firmer this time, impatient—dragging Ava out of her spiraling thoughts. She wiped her palms on her jeans, her heart climbing into her throat. Only one person knocked like that.“Ava?”Louis’s voice drifted through the door, warm and familiar. “Open up. We need to leave.”Her stomach pitched.Leave.With him.Her phone screen lit up just then.William: Don’t be late.Just three words. But they tightened something deep inside her.Ava swallowed hard, her throat tight as she typed back with fingers that wouldn’t stop shaking.Ava: I’m coming. The reply was instant.William: Good girl. Her breath caught. She dropped her phone on the bed and pressed her palms to her temples. “This is too much,” she whispered. “This is way too much.”"Ava?" Louis called out again from behind the door. Not tonight. Not now. Not when William was waiting for her in less than an hour… expecting her.Another knock. “Ava, come on.”She squeezed her eyes shut. Not now, Louis. Please, not now.

  • On My Professor's Desk   CHAPTER FORTY ONE

For a moment, the silence in the room sharpened like glass. Dr. Reid didn’t blink. Didn’t breathe. His eyes—dark, piercing, unreadable—searched her face as if he could pull the truth straight out of her bloodstream.Ava regretted it instantly. She had let too much truth escape.William stepped closer, slow and deliberate, until Ava swore the air between them heated like flame. “Protect us,” he repeated softly, tasting the words. “Ava…who knows about us?”Her throat tightened. “Camille...”“Camille?” His voice dropped an octave, dangerously calm. “How come? Did you tell her?”"No, I didn't." Ava answered quietly, "She suspected there was something going on between us. I got back with Louis to convince her otherwise."“Louis,” he swallowed hard, “is a boy who thinks he owns a woman he barely knows. You are not his girlfriend, Ava. And certainly not giving him a second chance.”Ava’s chest rose and fell rapidly. “William did you hear me, I had to do something. Camille was starting to get

  • On My Professor's Desk   CHAPTER FORTY

By Tuesday morning, Crestmore’s campus buzzed with the usual early-week chaos—students rushing between buildings, laughter echoing across the quad, backpacks slung carelessly over shoulders. But amidst the crowd, one pair of eyes had been locked on Ava since the moment she stepped onto campus.Jason.His jaw tightened the moment he spotted her.Because Ava wasn’t alone.Louis walked beside her, his hand lightly brushing hers as they talked, his smile easy and warm—like a boy who had just gotten exactly what he wanted. Ava laughed at something he said, slipping effortlessly into the role she’d chosen for herself.A role she had no choice but to play.Jason’s fists clenched at his sides. He looked furious. No—worse. He looked betrayed. His stare burned into Ava so intensely that Louis eventually noticed. “Is he seriously staring at you like that?”Ava swallowed. “Ignore him.”But Louis didn’t ignore anything. Not when it came to other men looking at his… girlfriend. Yes, Ava was his gir

  • On My Professor's Desk   CHAPTER THIRTY NINE

After class, Camille was waiting.Ava felt it the moment class ended—the weight of Camille’s stare burning between her shoulder blades as the rest of the students gathered their books and drifted toward the exit. Dr. Reid dismissed the class with his usual cool authority, barely sparing Ava a glance… though she felt his presence like a touch, her pulse reacting as if he had whispered her name. She tried to slip out quickly, weaving through the crowd. But Camille caught her arm.“Ava,” she said, voice too calm. “We need to talk.”Ava forced a small smile. “Can’t it wait? I promised myself I’d grab lunch early today—”“No.” Camille’s grip tightened. “It can’t.”A few students glanced their way. Ava exhaled, nodding, and they stepped into an empty hallway.Once the door clicked shut behind them, Camille crossed her arms. Her eyes—usually warm and bright—carried something sharp now. Searching. Accusing.“Where were you this weekend?”Ava blinked. “Seriously, Camille can't we talk about th

  • On My Professor's Desk   CHAPTER THIRTY EIGHT

Ava barely slept in the motel room after Dr. Reid left her to go be with his wife.By the time she slipped back into campus at dawn — hair tossed from the night, lips swollen from William’s desperate kisses, the motel’s thin cotton sheets still ghosting her skin — she felt like a shadow of herself. Her nerves buzzed with equal parts dread and longing. She entered the dorm quietly, praying Camille was still asleep. She wasn’t.Camille sat on her bed with her arms crossed, fully awake, face bare but sharp with suspicion. She looked like someone who had been waiting. Thinking. Stewing.Ava froze in the doorway.“Ava?” Camille’s voice was calm — too calm. “Where were you last night?”Ava swallowed, forcing her expression into something neutral. “Jason called, and he—”“That’s interesting,” Camille cut in, eyes narrowing, “because I talked to Jason this morning.”A chill swept across Ava’s spine.Camille stood, folding her arms tighter. “And guess what? He said he has not seen you after yo
